CARROLL BUILDINGConstructed 1906-10; rehabilitated 1984
Thomas W. Carroll, the son of an English immigrant stevedore, established an icehouse and fish business on this site in 1895. When his ice concern was purchased by Southern Ice Company, he continued to sell fish at the same location. The present brick structure just north of the corner, with arch windows and simple brick banding, was built by Carroll between 1906-1910. Wooden buildings on the corner were torn down for parking in the 1970’s, and after the Carroll family closed the seafood company in 1984, this street-front site was developed with a modern office building connected to the earlier structure.
