Romanian educational system
The structure of Romanian educational system Preuniversitary education, with 4 cycles:
a) kindergardenb) primary school: grades I – IVc) secondary education:
- lower secondary with 2 successive cycles:
- gimnazium: grades V – VIII - lower high school: grades IX – X
- upper secondary grades XI – XII / XIII- vocational education
d) post highschool education
Higher (universitary) education:a) short term education - licenceb) long term education – c) masterd) PhD studies
The kindergarden includes children between 3 and 6-7 years old.
The activities are developed in: kindergarden with short program (4 hours daily), long program (8 hours daily) or weekly program (full time).
The aim of the first level – 3 – 5 years old – is socialization of the children.
The aim of the second level – 5 -7 years old –
is preparing the children for the school.
The duration of the general obligatory education is 10 classes.
In theory, education finishes at the age of 16-17 years.
Children start school at the age of 7 (sometimes at 6)
and finish at the age of 10-11.
Classes are held in the morning (4-5 subjects/day).
There are 4 grades: I, II, III, IV.
includes grades V-VIII and represents a full day program. Pupils graduate by taking national exams during the 7th and 8th grade. Children usually finish school at the age of 14 -15 years.
Includes grades IX – XII – there are full day programs, half day programs and no frequency. There are 3 main types: theoretical: natural science and language studies; technological and vocational: artistic, sports and theologie. Children graduate highschool with the “bacalaureat” exam.
The system of grades:
• marks (classes I – IV) – FB = very well, B = well, S = satisfactory, N = unsatisfactory
• starting with the 5th grade
children will receive
grades between 1 to 10.
• The mark “unsatisfactory”
and grades
under 5 means failure.
