Thank you Chris the community appreciates all you have done for Singleton during your time as Councillor. After three lives as a Councillor over 21 years Chris has decided to not contest the October Council election and will retire from Council. .“It has been a real privilege to represent the people of Singleton on Council,” Chris said. “From when I was first elected in 1978 I have seen Singleton grow from a community of a few hundred people with basically no infrastructure to a community with a population of 3,500. Council has built an easily used and well-maintained road system and we now have the Laurie Stanford Reserve which has been recently totally redeveloped and now has the state-of-the art Community Centre. Singleton now has parks across the community with playground equipment that the children love. ” We now have the Singleton Social and Sports Association which manages the Community Centre and the Singleton Residents’ Association, the Singleton Golden Bay Tennis Club, the Singleton Cricket Club (now Singleton/Irwinians), the Singleton Playgroup, the Singleton Bush Fire Brigade, the Comet Bay Bowling Club, the Singleton Social Club and the Peel District Junior Soccer Associa- tion, all of whom Chris has worked with to assist and all of which have been formed since 1978. These organisations play a central role in the community. To avoid any conflict of interest when dealing with Council on their behalf, Chris has not been a member of any of these clubs apart from when he was a member of the Singleton Fire Brigade, of which he was the foundation Secretary, and the short time he was Chair of the Singleton Social and Sports Association. That will likely change as in his retirement Chris is likely to join one or more of those clubs and associations. “I will take some time out to reflect and relax and see what turns up,” Chris said. “My work on Council has been pretty demanding but I have enjoyed the experience of being in the engine room of helping to make Singleton a better place to live. I have every confidence that my replacement will help to make it even better. ” Chris said he would most sincerely like to thank all the people that have supported him over the years. While because of his career as a teacher Chris and Anne have lived in communities across Western Australia and lived in Canada for the time he studied there, they have been part of Singleton and Singleton has been part of them since they first moved here in 1977. “Singleton remains the best place we have ever lived and I thank the people of Singleton for making it the place that it is, ” Chris said. Hello Singleton. The SRA has recently been made aware that the developer of the Madora Bay North project has listed the entire 143 hectares of land for sale. In 2018, the SRA was actively involved in opposing the Madora North Development Local Structure Plan, which has a range of adverse implications for Singleton. Earlier this year, we expressed our concerns with the developer (H&N Perry) about sand dunes being moved and relocated adjacent to Singleton houses. The height of the sand is now at fence height level for many houses, causing great concern for those long term residents, who face the possibility of some “Berlin Wall” structure being constructed behind their houses. The SRA will monitor the situation in regards to any future developments and hopefully a new developer will be more considerate of the long term Singleton residents whom they will be affecting at the interface of the two communities. Sunday 4 to Saturday 10 August 2019 is Homelessness Week. The local ser-vices that directly help the homeless provide the community with a list essential items they are running short on. If you are having a clear out or would like to help please see the attached flyer for further details. For further information and contact details on all services available in the local area please visit the City of Rockingham’s website for the Homeless Reference Card, and as to how you may help. The Singleton Social and Sporting Association (SSSA) AGM will be held in Sep-tember. Please keep an eye on the Facebook page for the announcement of the date. As advertised in this Newsletter, the positions of Chairperson, Treasurer and Booking Officer are vacant and require volunteers to come forward and as-sist. If you have some spare time to help out with an important Singleton volun-teer organisation, please contact me for more information. The SRA would like to take the time to thank those who provide the printing ser-vices for our Newsletter. The Member for Brand, Madeleine King, allows her office to print the News section of our Newsletter. While we cannot endorse any political party, we very much appreciate the support from Madeleine and we know the hard work she does in our community. The Advertising section of our Newsletter is printed by our good friends at AQWASUN Real Estate in Golden Bay. We really appreciate the support from Aaron and Annette at Aqwasun in helping us produce our Newsletter. We ask our community to support Aqwasun and to contact them for any assistance with realestate matters on 9537 1220, or check out their web site aqwasun.com.au Regards, Graeme Dean. FRIENDS OF PAGANONI SWAMP
It was gratifying to know that our unique but vanishing Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) woodlands and forests of the Swan Coastal Plain ecological community has been listed as Critically endangered under the Federal Government’s Environmental Protetion and Biodiversity Conservation Act. Tuarts only grow on the Swan Coastal Plain from approximately Jurien to Busselton. We know that the greatest threat to our woodlands has been clearing and fragmentation (for logging, mining, agriculture and urban development) to the extent that only 14% to 20% remains. Therefore the priority is to protect large areas currently unprotected and secondly to maintain and/or improve connectivity between patches.
The reason why this listing is significant for our group and for Rockingham and Mandurah residents is that Paganoni Swamp Reserve includes quality Tuart woodland, particularly west of the central wetland. This listing highlights the importance of the Reserve and provides an example of the vegetation existing on the Swan Coastal Plain before Europeans arrived. Unfortunately many of the associated fauna such as woylies, chuditch and numbats have not survived on the Plain mainly due to predation by foxes and cats. So what can we do to ensure that our woodlands survive for future generations to enjoy? We can use alternative construction materials that do not include yellow sand and limestone which are found beneath our Tuart woodlands,
we can demand better planning laws to find housing in-fill solutions that meet people’s expectations but also preserve the beauty found in the older urban landscapes and we can assist with the connectivity of Tuart patches by planting native gardens in our front yards and verges. Please remember, if you are interested in joining us in our weekly activities, we meet at Paganoni Swamp Reserve on Monday mornings. For further details contact Leonie by email [email protected] or mobile 0439 921 298.

Singleton Social and Sporting Association (SSSA) Vacancy for Chairperson Position The SSSA is an Association formed in 2017 to facilitate the operation of the new Singleton Community Centre. The Association has seven member clubs being the Comet Bay Bowling Club, the Singleton Irwinians Cricket Club, the Singleton Social Club, the Peel Junior Soccer Association, the Singleton Tennis Club, the Singleton Playgroup and the Singleton Residents’ Association. Our aim is to provide a facility that becomes a “community hub” for the seven member clubs and for the wider Singleton community. Our Board of Directors wish to advise that the position of Chairperson of the Association has become vacant and must be filled at the earliest opportunity. We are seeking a
person who would be a strong but fair leader and preferably with experience on the Board or Committee of a similar type of Association. The position is on a volunteer basis and the applicant would not be permitted to be a serving Board member of one of the seven member clubs. Our Board meets every 4 weeks and the Chairperson would be expected to lead such meetings, as well as perform some other occasional duties related to the role. Further details regarding the role can be provided on request. Applications for the Chairperson position are now open. Should you wish to apply, please send a brief CV to our Secretary (Graeme Dean) via email [email protected] or phone 0407 900 417.
