PHOENIX News

Welcome back to the school year for 2012.

Any students requiring assistance with Year 10 class work or assessment tasks should contact me in the Phoenix office to be added to the tutorial support list. You may need one off help or have access to ongoing assistance as you require.

Project Phoenix is off to a running start with Year 10 students scheduled to start TAFE courses in Automotive, Beauty and Welding early in February already attending their courses.

The PALS program at Singleton Community College has commenced Thursdays and Fridays, with a small group of students, who also have commenced vocational courses. Any students who completed OH&S Whitecard on the last week of 2011 may collect their certificates from the Phoenix office.

I am looking forward to a productive and successful year supporting students to achieve their goals and plan pathways for their future.

Kathy Quinn, Phoenix coordinator

English Novel and Book Buying The English syllabuses require a study of fiction every year. A study of fiction helps students to develop skills that enable them to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning. Your child‟s English teacher carefully selects a text that he/she feels will be of maximum benefit to your child‟s studies.

An essential part of this novel study is the requirement for every student to have access to their own copy of the text. To this end, we invite an educational book seller into the school to sell books at a discounted price to the students.

This book buying day happens in Term 1 of each year. If you already have access to the book or find it cheaper elsewhere then you are not obligated to purchase the book through the school.

Why do we ask students to purchase their own copy of the novel set for study?

For a number of reasons:

The student will have ready access to the texts and will be able to use them to write notes and complete homework.

Texts date, particularly teen fiction. Novels that a past generation enjoyed reading as students, may no longer inspire students 30 years later.

In the past, teachers have been significantly restricted in the choice of novels studied in class. If there isn‟t a full class set in the dusty book room, then that text can‟t be taught.

Books perish and replacement costs are prohibitive. Older books may be out of print so adding to existing stock is impossible.

Teaching with mixed or half sets of texts often leads students to lack the close supervision of their work and reading support when required.

When there is a full class set of texts available it often is in great demand, but of course only one class can use the set at a time. If more than one class wants to study that text, then the unit of work cannot be taught at the same time. This can create inequity of assessment across the Year.

Your child‟s classroom teacher will be providing details about the novel set for study, the price through the book seller and the date of the book sale later this term.

Pass Outs

Just a reminder, that if your child needs to leave school early, they must get a pass out from the main office. All they need to do is go to the student counter between 9:00am and 9:20am with a note from home. The note MUST have the following information:

Student's first and last name,

What year they are in,

What time they will need to leave,

Why they will need a pass out (e.g. Doctor‟s appointment) and,

Also please indicate an expected return time if they are coming back. If they are not planning to return on that day, could you clearly write the words „Not returning‟.

They will receive a printed receipt with the relevant details stapled to an official Department of Education leave pass, which needs to be shown to a staff member when leaving the school grounds.

If your child is unable to get their pass out processed during this morning session, they will need to see one of

the Deputy Principals at the recess break to approve it.

Late Arrivals

If your child arrives at school between 9.25am and 9:45am, they do not need to go to the main office, but should go straight to roll call.

If however they arrive after 9:45am, the main office will issue them with a late arrival slip which needs to be signed and returned the following day.

Mr M Bonelli

Creative & Performing Arts

The Creative & Performing Arts faculty (CAPA) would like to welcome all students, old and new, to the 2012 school year. This year will be an exciting time for the whole faculty as there are many extra curricula activities planned for our students including excursions, performance and exhibition opportunities and a school musical production.

I would also like to congratulate all the 2011 HSC Music, Visual Arts and Drama students on their excellent results in the HSC. Special congratulations to H Dunne whose Viva Voce was recognised as exemplary work and who will be appearing in ENCORE representing the highest standards in the 2011 HSC for Music.

The CAPA department has many changes this year as the „baby boom‟ continues. Mrs Sheeley and Ms Latona are being replaced by Miss Radcliffe, Mrs French by Mr Douglas, Mrs Luscombe by Miss Tilse and Mrs Polworth, Miss Lowe and Mrs Hodges who are sharing the Dance and Drama classes.

Finally, invoices for contributions to non-elective and elective courses will be posted home in the coming weeks. The course contributions are essential to the purchase of quality equipment and consumable materials. We ask that all students pay their contribution at their earliest convenience. Families who are experiencing financial hardship may contact the Head Teacher Welfare to make special arrangements. The course fees for all CAPA subjects are listed below, please note that some fees vary from those already published as lists were not updated.

If any parents have any questions regarding course fees or course content please contact me at the school.

Home Economics Report

What a way to start the year, a busy schedule and enthusiastic students and staff. We have had some changes in our staffing with Miss Rachelle Thompson joining us in the Home Economics faculty.

I would also like to thank and wish all the best to Mr Martin Gray who was with us at the end of 2011 as a casual in our faculty. He has been a wonderful staff member and we wish him well for his future endeavours.

We have also started all our classes with our students full of energy after the Christmas break. We hope this continues for the rest of the year.

All classes have specific requests for equipment to ensure all students are prepared for all lessons. This includes the following for:

ALL Practical Home Economic/Hospitality Classes

A4 size display folder,

An A4 size booklet for theory lessons,

A4 plastic sleeve for assignments,

Enclosed black leather shoes,

Container for practical lessons, and

Payment of course fees by end of Term 1.This will enable us to finalise our budget and reduce problems at the end of the year. Invoices will be sent out soon from the school and payments can be made after at the main office. Any problems with regard to payment please contact Head Teacher Welfare during school hour as we may be able to assist and organise a payment plan.

We welcome all new students to our faculty and wish everyone a great 2012 full of great learning experiences.

Childcare Elective Subjects. Childcare students will have a busy year in 2012 as they participate in not only the required theory work, but they will also volunteer by helping staff at the Singleton Family Support Playgroup, Singleton Primary School and Singleton Preschool.

Parents and caregivers are also invited to bring children along to our school playgroup, which is coordinated and managed by Year 9 Childcare students. The playgroup is held usually on a fortnightly basis in our childcare classroom. There is no cost involved; however visitors may make a gold coin donation which helps support childcare students‟ fundraising for two children from villages in

remote areas of Nepal. Childcare students have been sponsoring the two children for over two years and will continue to do this until Laxmi and Shankar complete their schooling. If you are interested in attending our playgroups, the dates will appear

in The Singleton Argus or contact Sue Hartnett at Singleton High.

Year 10 Childcare students are also given the opportunity to take home one of our Realcare Babies. The babies are simulators which give students an idea of how time consuming babies can be. Just like the real thing these simulators wake during the night and need to be cared for at inconvenient times, like when you just sit down for dinner. The feedback from parents in the past has been very encouraging; with all parents saying that it is such a worthwhile activity for students to participate in, with the main objective being to deter teenage pregnancy.

The practical components of Year 9 and 10 Childcare are an excellent opportunity for students to discover what it is really like to work with children from early ages, right through to primary school age. Students will bring home permission notes for these activities, so please ensure they are filled out correctly to enable your child to gain valuable experience.

If you have any queries regarding any aspect of the Childcare courses, please contact; Ms S Hartnett at Singleton High School on 02 6571 1199.

Managing Social Networking Incidents

The way people communicate via social networking can be an issue for schools. Facebook is the most popular social networking site at present; however, there are others such as Twitter, Linkedin, MySpace, Ning and Orkut. Parents are expecting principals to stop conflict, bullying and harassment which often take place outside school hours.

What can principals do about it?

Principals can deal with this behaviour provided there is a clear and close connection between the school and the conduct of students. Principals act on cyberbullying in the same way they would manage bullying or harassment in the classroom or playground under the school‟s discipline or anti-bullying policies. Where warranted this could include disciplinary action.

(See Student Discipline on the Student Welfare Directorate intranet site: https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/lists/directoratesaz/stuwelfare/studiscipline/index.htm)

An effective response to bullying behaviour requires a partnership between parents, students, education providers and others. The Bullying: Preventing and Responding to Student Bullying in Schools Policy, focuses on protection, prevention, early intervention and response strategies for student bullying.

Managing Facebook Incidents

Students may make comments on Facebook that go against the agreement they have with Facebook. Parents should be aware of the following aspects of the Facebook agreement. Facebook users must not.

Be under the age of 13 years,

Provided false personal information or create an account for anyone else without permission,

Create more than one personal profile,

Share passwords, let anyone else access your account or do anything that may jeopardise the security of your account,

Upload viruses or other malicious code,

Solicit login information or access an account belonging to someone else,

Bully, intimidate or harass any user,

Post content that is hateful, threatening, pornographic, incites violence or contains nudity or graphic gratuitous violence,

Do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious or discriminatory,

Tag users or send email invitations to non-users without their consent,

Post content or take action on Facebook that infringes or violates someone else‟s rights or otherwise violates the law,

Post anyone‟s identification documents or sensitive financial information, or

Facilitate or encourage any violations of the agreement.

Facebook can disable an account or remove any content or information if they believe it violates the agreement. Once an account has been disabled users must not create another account without the permission of Facebook.

The entire Facebook agreement can be locate at: http://www.facebook.com/terms.php

What will happen when a student reports to the principal that they are being harassed on Facebook?

• View the transcript of what has been posted,

• Identify the person who has engaged in that behaviour,

• If it is threatening or inciting violence, notify local police and the School Safety and Response hotline,

• Determine if it is school-related,

• Retain a copy of the comments page (if possible),

• Contact parents of the students concerned,

• After speaking with the Police (where the incident has been reported to them) instruct the student who has engaged in that behaviour to remove the posting,

• Advise the student who has complained to block the offender,

• Engage the school‟s anti-bullying policy where appropriate. This could include taking appropriate disciplinary action against the offender(s) if it is school related,

• Ensure the student who is the subject of the behaviour (or his or her parents) reports the harassment to Facebook,

• Provide support for the victim.

Reporting an offensive comment on Facebook

Only people with a Facebook account can report offensive material. To report a comment:

• Run cursor along the comment, level with name until and „X‟ appears in the top right corner of the comment,

• Click on the „X‟,

• Click „Report post or spam‟,

• Click „Report it as abuse‟.

• Make selection and continue,

• In the „What you can do box‟ make the appropriate selection and ensure you click „Report to Facebook‟ before continuing.

Page 8: Singleton High School Newsletter

Advice for students who are attacked on Facebook or other sites

• Don‟t respond. Bullies like getting a response,

• Tell someone. Use Facebook‟s Trusted Friend tool to send a copy of the abuse to someone you trust and who can help. This also generates a report to Facebook,

• Document or save the content as it may be needed as evidence. If you are feeling upset – talk to someone about how you are feeling. If you want to do this anonymously contact the Kids Helpline.

Year 9 Hospitality

Students studying the popular Year 9 Hospitality course have settled into the class routine and are looking forward to the practical lessons getting into full swing.

In Term 1 students will investigate employment opportunities in the hospitality industry and local hospitality establishments. With this knowledge students may have an advantage when it comes to seeking part time work, as they reach an age when they are beginning to seek avenues to earn an income of their own.

During Term 2 the focus will change to menu development, culminating in each student designing and developing menus that would not be out of place in quality restaurants. Students will have their own DER laptop computer by this stage which will enable them to develop their graphic design skills as well.

This year there is an extra incentive for students to do well in Year 9 Hospitality. A regional committee has been established by industry bodies to set up workshops at the Hunter Valley Hotel Academy for students who show potential and have an interest in pursuing studies in the area of Hospitality. We wish all the students well and encourage them to enjoy themselves as they discover new skills and get to taste their creations each week.

Invoices for course fees will be going out shortly. Year 9 Hospitality this year incurs an $80.00 course fee which covers the cost of food items and consumables for the weekly practical lesson. Your promptness in payment will be appreciated. Mr Means

Important Notice

As you are aware the majority of our students arrive at school by bus. Once they leave the bus and enter school grounds we have a duty of care to your child. I am sure you expect the school to provide this duty of care.

However, we are having increasing numbers of students leaving the school grounds before roll call. This creates issues with traffic as students walk along the street, and it also creates a littering problem as students drop their rubbish in the streets. I have timetabled extra staff of a morning to try and stem this flow out of the school. I am seeking your support in encouraging your child to stay in the school. If this trend continues I may look at other options, to ensure your children are safe in the school.

If your child also persists in refusing to follow teacher instructions they will be dealt with as a consequence of persistent disobedience. I again thank you for your support in ensuring our school can provide a safe environment for your child.

Anytime you feel that your student is uncomfortable at school or needs a little more support to ensure their time spent at school is enjoyable please contact the relevant Year Adviser. They are always happy to be of assistance. If you require a meeting please ensure you ring the school and make an appointment as this allows the Year Adviser to be prepared for a successful meeting. Thank you for your understanding.

As we entered the second week of the school year it was very pleasing to observe that the majority of our student population was wearing full school uniform with pride. The wearing of school uniforms by students assists the Singleton High School Community in:

• Defining an identity for the school within its community,

• Developing students‟ sense of belonging to the school community,

• Providing an opportunity to build school spirit,

• Enhancing the health and safety of students when involved in school activities,

• Promoting a sense of inclusiveness, non- discrimination and equal opportunity,

• Reinforcing the perception of the school as an ordered and safe environment,

• Increasing the personal safety of students and staff by allowing easier recognition of visitors and potential intruders in the school,

• Promoting positive community perceptions of public education, and

• Making school clothing more affordable for families by eliminating the risk of peer pressure to wear transiently fashionable and expensive clothes.

The uniform at Singleton High School is noted in the table below and provides for both cold and hot weather wear.

Each day, students can choose from the listed uniform items to suit conditions and personal preferences.

If you have any questions regarding uniform please do not hesitate to call the school. If your student is temporarily unable to wear appropriate uniform please provide a note that explains this, to the roll call teacher.

Finally, I am looking forward to working in this role for the duration of Term 1 and 2 while the HT Welfare Ms K Ballard is on leave. I personally wish her all the best during her leave and look forward to her return in Term 3. Dayna Cowmeadow (Rlv HT Welfare)

Seasons for Growth

Have you experienced the death of a loved one, a parental divorce or separation, the experience and aftermath of natural disaster, moving house or school? Big changes like these can cause confronting and confusing emotions. Seasons for Growth helps children and young people to develop the language needed to express their feelings, and gives them a safe place to talk about them. Singleton Family support assists local schools in providing this program to their students. Please speak to your school to find out if this program will be offered at your school.

The Play Project is a new service being offered at Family Support in 2012. The project is being funded by Xstrata Coal to assist families in building strong and secure relationships. The aim of the project is to assist families with children 4 - 10 years to connect with their children by entering their world of play.

Play is a natural state for children. It is how they express their feelings, problem solve and learn about their world. By playing alongside a child, really listening to and acknowledging their capabilities, you can help a child develop a strong sense of self and belonging. If you are interested in improving relationships in your family or are concerned about your child‟s behaviour please contact Family Support for more information. Phone: 6572 4288

Australians at War – WW1

Australia Will Be There… Or “Cooee…digger! Who‟ll come a Fightin‟ the Kaiser with Me”? “We‟ll drink all his beer, and eat up all his sausages. Who‟ll come a fightin‟ the Kaiser with me”?

„Fightin the Kaiser‟ is a one man vaudevillian melodrama incorporating the songs, poems, letters, anecdotes, reportage and reminiscences of the ANZACS.

Brett Hunt plays Gassy, a wounded vet eternally inhabiting the no man‟s land of a veteran‟s hospital. He talks and

sings and jokes and rails at „Young Tippen‟, his best mate;

“…Long dead on Anzac…” and now forever young in a portrait on his bureau.

Through characterization and caricatures, irreverent larrikin humour, the playing of the ukulele and WW1 warbling, Gassy reflects upon the great war; Jokes with Tippen about their recruitment in Sydney; teases him over hi-jinks in Egypt; roars about the trials and tribulations of the Dardanelle's and reflects on the great tragedy of the Western Front. “You were lucky to cop it on Anzac Tippen you missed the worst of it”. A powerful WW1 drama with larrikin humour and LIVE MUSIC.

Year 9 - Fighting the Kaiser - Monday, 5 March

Year 10 - Dusted off - Monday, 5 March Cost to school students is reduced to $5.00 each.

Letters have gone out to students on Tuesday, 14 February so parents should already have been informed.

Also - two kits from the Australian War Memorial that are

associated with the plays will be on display on the day in the MPC and later in the library. The school has those on

loan for one month. This latter arranged by our Defence

student mentor Tracey Jones.

Australians at War – Vietnam:

‘Dusted Off’

Brett Hunt grew up in a house often filled with Vietnam Vets. His father, who had been brought to national attention

through the lyric "and Frankie kicked the mine the day that mankind kicked the moon", shared the feelings of

isolation and alienation felt by many Vets and always kept his door open for a Vet needing a place to sleep.

Brett, listening to these men talk, developed an understanding of the war and its impact on the men and their families. He observed, firsthand, their intense feelings of alienation, the destructive effects of PTSD, the break down in family relationships and the impact on women and children.

He also witnessed the camaraderie and brotherhood that these men had forged and their ability to support each other with humility, strength and a sense of humour.

Brett‟s journey as the son of a Vietnam Vet reached an emotional climax in 1987 when, during the welcome home parade, he and his siblings found themselves onstage next to their father and John Schumann singing „Was Only Nineteen‟ along with 25 000 veterans and their families in the Sydney Domain.

In his play Vietnam: „Dusted Off‟ Brett, an accomplished actor and guitarist, shares his family story. He performs the Australian hits of the day, Normie Rowe, Col Joye, Johnny O‟Keefe etc… as he tells the story of Connie his mother and of Frank, his father; who joined the army at 17, trained at Kokoda Barracks Canungra, departed Townsville on the Vung Tau ferry and found himself, a forward scout in the jungles of Vietnam.

After a mine contact Frank is dusted off to Vung Tau and repatriated home. Back home, Frank and Connie are confronted with indifference and contempt from Government and society, a debilitating injury and slowly developing Hyper Anxiety Disorder.

Welcome Year 7 2012

A warm welcome is extended to both the students and parents of Year 7 2012. We were really pleased to witness firsthand the excitement and ease with which our beautiful new students have settled in to life at Singleton High. Welcome Year 7 Students and Parents to Japanese in 2012! The year has started well with students already learning introductions and greetings in Japanese, as well as some basic writing. Students need to bring their workbook, diary and pencil case to every lesson, and they require an A4 Display Folder to keep in the classroom in order to build a portfolio of the work they have completed. By keeping a portfolio, the students can quickly check themselves, what else they need to do to meet the requirements for Japanese. Homework consists of some assignments, (see below) and learning their Japanese words for about 10 - 15 minutes every night. There is also a Japanese Moodle site which they can log on to at home. It is very interactive and revises what the students have learnt in class, as well as providing extension activities for students who want to do that little bit more. The address is: http://web2.singleton-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/moodle/ , click on Languages button, then Year 7 Japanese and log on with the student‟s normal login at school. If students have trouble with their login at home e.g. they need a key code, please see Ms Barnett in the Languages staffroom.

Assessment includes:

• 10% Class participation & Homework (All year)

• 10% Postcard from Japan (Term 1, Week 6)

• 20% Speaking in Japanese (Term 1, Week 9)

• 20% Reading Japanese (Term 2, Week 7)

• 20% Writing Japanese (Term 3, Week 5)

• 20% Listening to Japanese (Term 4, Week 3) The Japanese teachers for this year are Ms Cowmeadow, Ms Barnett, Ms Holz and Mr Collins. Please ring us if you have any questions.
