The dynamic texture of the life and landscape of Singapore is often the subject of contemplation for those living in and visiting the city. For some this may be a solitary meditation, while for others the process is more collective and community-based. In some cases, these two endeavours may come together through deliberate engagement with a wider audience. Whatever the starting point, looking at, working with, and documenting the transformations of Singapore are all themes covered in this month’s edition of SAGG.

Twentyfifteen, for instance, is a non-profit photography project from PLATFORM, a gathering of Singapore-based photographers engaged in social documentary and storytelling. To mark Singapore’s upcoming golden anniversary, Twentyfifteen is producing a series of publications featuring the work of photographers sharing their visions of their country.

SOCIAL CREATIVES is another Singapore-based non-profit group, whose aim is to bring art to a wide audience through public murals. They engage with diverse groups in the process of creating art, transforming neglected parts of the city into bright and imaginative spaces. Their approach is collaborative, bringing art to the grassroots level to re-connect people and their environment.

Finally, we are excited to announce the opening of ARNDT Singapore’s second exhibition space at Gillman Barracks, the former military base turned arts centre. The opening group show features the work of established and emerging Filipino artists living and working in the vibrant capital city of Manila.

Whether you are engaging in collective art projects or appreciating the finished works, and are doing this alone or in a group, we at SAGG would like to wish you an inspiring and colourful August.

The Hands on Approach

By Chelsea Chua

Printmaking studio Monster Gallery will be present-ing Daydreams + Nightmares at The Substation Gallery, a group exhibition that will feature works created from different printmaking techniques by designers and artists such as Michael Ng aka Mind-flyer, Tilen Ti, Lee Ruixiang, Michy Witchy, Sidd Wills, Lindsey Bailey, Ong Lijie, Philip Hemnell, Holycrap (Renn & Aira), and PHUNK. The exhibition’s curator and brains behind Monster Gallery, Joseph Chiang, tells us what to expect from the exhibition, and his obses-sion with printmaking.

Chelsea Chua: What made you decide on the theme: Daydreams and Nightmares?

Joseph Chiang: I wanted to force myself and the other artists to delve into the extremes of brightness and darkness in our art. I wanted them to draw inspiration from their hopes and dreams, as well as their fears and despair to create something unexpected.

CC: Why do you think manual printing processes like letterpress printing and silkscreen printing have enjoyed a revival in recent years? Is there a particular reason why you're drawn to these pro-cesses yourself?

JC: With the technology and computer softwares we have today, we have almost forgotten about the sheer joy of using our hands to do even the simplest of tasks. As more and more things become automated, the idea of going back to basics and using your hands to create things becomes even more appealing.

I grew up in the era before the computers, then got sucked into the computer age as I worked in graphic design and computer anima-tion. It came full circle when I got sick of staring at the computer screen the whole day and decided to switch career and do some-thing that does not require me to use a computer. Printmaking was the perfect choice for me.

CC: There'll be a series of silkscreen printing workshops to accom-pany the exhibition, and I believe that you've generally had a good response to similar workshops that you've held in the past? Do you think there is a growing demand for such 'craft' workshops?

JC: I believe it’s the same reason why I decided to dump the com-puter and started working manually again. People are just tired of working and staring at their computers the whole day they find it refreshing to start working with their hands again. As technology becomes more advanced, more people are going to find it appealing to return to basics and do things that a computer cannot do, hence the demand for such ‘craft’ workshops. These classes draw mostly people who are either seeking a refuge from modern technology, or those who are longing for a time before the computers take over the world.

Daydreams + Nightmares is on at The Substation Gallery from Fri 22 Aug to Sat 30

Aug 2014. The Substation Gallery is open daily from 12pm to 9pm, and is closed on

public holidays. Admission is free. The Substation is located at 45 Armenian Street,

Singapore 179936. Join us for the opening on Thursday 21 August, 7.30pm.

Monster Gallery will be conducting a series of silkscreen printing workshops on

22, 23, 29 and 30 August. Admission to the workshop is $12.

Ika's Japonism

By Vidhya Gnana Gouresan

There is a reason for every occurrence in one's life. The subconscious mind never fails to document every tiny detail in the sentiments that we feel and in the things that we see during specific events and experiences in our current and past lives. In the same spirit, Ika Forssell's unfathomable interest in Japanese heritage and culture is not accidental. Inspirations are never accidental.

Ika is a Swedish artist who is based in Singapore. She has traveled extensively and has lived in Brazil, Sweden and Japan. The artist, who quite instantaneously exudes a subtle sense of positive flamboyance, enjoys manipulating Japanese washi paper (organic, handmade paper) together with oil colours on her canvas. Ika's on-going series of paintings entitled 'Portraits', was first exhibited at an art exhibition at the Norwegian Seamen's Mission and Swedish Church in Singapore last year. As an extension to this series, Ika has created a compellingly expressive artwork, entitled Kabuki, in her combination of washi paper and oil on canvas.

Kabuki is a classical dance-drama of Japan, known and appreciated for its highly-dramatic stylisation and the intriguingly elaborate gear and make-up worn by its performers. Ika's Kabuki is an indubitably confrontational artwork. The revelation of the single eye of the Kabuki performer - the all-encompassing subject of the painting - evokes the sense of an untold narrative; a secret that is destined to remain a timeless mystery. Red. Blue. White. Black. The chosen colour palette reflects a prudent decision to allow no distraction - for the subject, the viewer and the artist - from the perceived confrontation that is occurring within and through the painting. Here, what is being confronted is an open-ended matter that is clearly not the focus. Instead, it is the act and right to confront that is being theatrically-celebrated in Ika's Kabuki. Staying true to the dance-drama's heavily colour-oriented physical attributes, Ika's careful, limited and calculated usage of washi paper as a compliment to the oil medium offers the viewer the much-needed and expected dramatisation.

Undoubtedly and unsurprisingly, there have been many artists across the globe who have been enchanted, enlightened and inspired by the enthralling art and culture of the Land of the Rising Sun. The Post-Impressionists (who belong to a late 19th century movement in

Singapore Art Gallery Guide12

modern art within the western context), prove to be a classic example. Indeed, the word 'Japonism' was termed in 1872, in order to refer to the influence of Japanese art on artists who hail from the western context. One cannot help but mention Post-Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh at this juncture, as his aesthetic obsession with Japanese art, particularly ukiyo-e (a genre of woodblock prints/paintings), continues to be a monumental point-of-reference in popular art history.

Coming back to Ika, it is important to mention her successful participation as a significant artist of the blockbuster exhibition, 'The Global Icon: Ganesha in Fine Art', which was presented by Gnani Arts in Singapore in May 2014. For this exhibition, which received stupendous media coverage and appreciation, Ika had created contemporary paintings of the popular Hindu god Ganesha, depicting him in convivial, worldly situations. What is fascinating is that her Ganesha paintings were created with washi paper, Indonesian batik and oil colours. On that note, it is indeed amiable and commendable to witness Ika's growing commitment towards the embracement of multiculturalism, not only in her choice of medium, but also in her choice of concept and context.

PLATFORM was formed by a group of Singapore-based photographers in 2011 with the mission of advocating and sharing social documentary. They seek to tell visual stories to a wider local audience concerning the Singaporean community through photography.

The group launched the initiative Twentyfifteen to publish a total of 20 books profiling photographers in Singapore as a project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Singapore in August 2015. Eight out of these 20 books have already been published. In an effort to be more inclusive, the group launched an additional program called +50, a complementary initiative to profile 50 more photographers through open pitches held at various locations around Singapore. These are the books already accomplished to date:

Book 1: For My Son by Darren SohDarren Soh uses his lenses to capture places and buildings in Singapore that have disappeared from the landscape or are likely to disappear over time. He visually preserves them in an attempt to relive the memories he has of them for his son. In a letter to his son he writes "...Perhaps my memories and this book will be all that I have for you from these places."

Book 2: Our Coastline by Lim WeixiangLim portrays the coastline of Singapore in a very poetic way by juxtaposing his interpretation of it. He understands it to be a boundary that is limiting and constricting. However, he emphasises looking beyond the coastline as a symbol of hope, an imagery of inspiration, aspirations and endless possibilities that are limitless.

Book 3: Bay of Dreams by Kevin WY Lee Bay of Dreams is a collection of photographs taken at the Marina Bay area of Singapore.

Book 4: Two People by Sean Lee“What God has joined together, let no man put asunder” is a verse from the Bible that encapsulates the essence of the series of pictures taken by Lee. He successfully formulates deeply reflective and realistic photographs that hover on the subject of family. The process has resulted in the creation of intimate encounters for viewers as they are invited to ponder on their own family life.

Book 5: Made in Singapore by Tay Kay Chin The protagonist in Made in Singapore is Salim Javed, who is from Bangladesh and has worked in Singapore since 1996. He works as a construction foreman in Singapore, his wife lives with the family in Bangladesh. Tay Kay Chin explains: “While I used the title Made in Singapore to refer to the baby girl his wife Jorna conceived when visiting Salim in Singapore, I realised along the way that he came here to make life better for himself and his family, and it is no exaggeration to say that many of these dreams were ‘made’ in Singapore. The money he earned here as a construction foreman is much higher than what he could have made back in his village, and it has certainly benefited his loved ones. Salim is a representative of the thousands of migrant workers who work here, and I certainly believe that they are part and parcel of the Singapore narrative.”

Book 6: Singapore 1925 – 2025 by Robert Zhao RenhuiIn this book, photographs of Singapore taken over a century were selected to chronicle the changing landscape of the small island. The pictures capture an ongoing dialogue between the city’s man-made infrastructure and its natural spaces and creatures. The Land Archive has contributed significantly to this publication through their documentation efforts in recording the evolution of the tropical-island state. Such initiatives provide useful historical and ecological material in the long run.

Book 7: A Little Bit of Me from Everything Else by Matthew Teo“Gaffer tape, mannequins, trolleys, huge bags of equipment and lightstands are part and parcel of my life as a camera assistant. Including them in this series is my attempt at formalising my work, as well as coming to terms with my career as a commercial/fashion photographer while juggling my own expectations as an artist and the influences I have had since my teenage years. I hope to challenge the boundaries we continually reconstruct between the self and others, as well as question what is socially acceptable to share with other people. This is particularly relevant in a modern world permeated by social media, where everyone is trying to share a piece of life and grab attention. I also use self-portraiture to express widespread social sentiments as well as my personal ones towards national policies and governance in Singapore.” says Matthew Teo about his work. Book 8: ARTiculate by Tan Ngiap HengThrough the series of photographs in this book, Tan pays tribute to Singaporean artists who have enriched our lives. This is Tan’s second attempt at doing a series of portraits of people in the arts and his subjects include visual artists, writers, dancers, theatre practitioners, musicians, photographers and animators. His technique of using projection and layering of images not only creates an aura of nostalgia, but very gracefully honours the ambassadors of the arts in Singapore.

As the great Henri Cartier-Bresson said: “Of all the means of expression, photography is the only one that fixes forever the precise and transitory instant. We photographers deal in things that are continually vanishing, and when they have vanished, there is no contrivance on earth that can make them come back again. We cannot develop and print a memory.” In light of this, let us begin to show more appreciation for the photographers in Singapore by supporting their efforts and works.

Since Larasati's first auction held on 30 April 2000 in Jakarta, Indonesia, the regional auction house’s reputation has grown rapidly for auctioning rare and emerging Indonesian as well as other Asian works at record prices. In 2003 Larasati marked a milestone in its pursuit to become a major player in the Asian market with its entry into Singapore and becoming the first Asian-based auction house that crossed national borders.

In 2009 Larasati became the first auction house from Southeast Asia to enter Hong Kong, the third largest auction market in the world. In view of growth opportunities and successful operations over the last 14 years, Larasati is expanding and One East Larasati is now the umbrella for its auction business in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

master artists from Southeast Asia and other important art hubs in Asia. More than just merely a matter of buying and selling art objects, Larasati is driven to enhance the appreciation and development of art in Asia.

Working in alliance with its overseas partners, Larasati currently manages its auctions in five different countries: Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Netherlands.

Spotting tomorrow’s icon is something Larasati has built its reputation on. The iconic Indonesian contemporary artist, I Nyoman Masriadi, was basically born in Larasati sale in the early 2000. Larasati was also the first auction house to offer Chinese contemporary art (the likes of Yue Minjun, Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, and Ju Ming) in Southeast Asia at its sales in Singapore 2003.

In April 2007 Larasati dedicated its Singapore auction to the Philippines Modern and Contemporary art, featuring among others: Alfredo Esquillo Jr, Ronald Ventura and BenCab. Today, Masriadi and Ronald Ventura are the pride of Southeast Asia and have become members of the million dollar club, while many of the Chinese contemporary artists that Larasati introduced back in 2003 in Singapore such as Zhang Xiaogang and Yue Minjun have joined the top division of international artists, selling their works in the millions of dollars.

Social Creatives is a Singapore-based, non-profit arts social enterprise, which celebrated its sixth birthday in July of this year. Since its founding in 2007, the group has actively worked towards making Singapore a more colourful city, both visually and emotionally.

Social Creatives collaborates with a wide range of people, including established and aspiring artists, community groups, corporate enterprises, people with disabilities, troubled youth and local volunteers. Through the joint creation of public artworks, the group’s aim is to bring people together to transform bland or ignored city spaces into colourful, vibrant destinations that attract locals and tourists alike, and to create a sense of connection among Singaporeans themselves, as well as between residents and their city.

Their work has been making an impression and they are receiving increasing interest at all levels. Indeed, last year Social Creatives partnered up with Singapore River One to transform the Singapore River Underpass in preparation for the city’s upcoming 50th anniversary next year. The theme of the many large and colourful

murals follows the story of the foundation of Singapore, and is intended to enhance connectivity between Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay and Boat Quay.

But their reach goes much further, and they have taken their vision of vibrant and engaged public artworks around the world, including to Russia, Canada, and most recently Germany. Their project in the German capital in June of this year, in collaboration with the internationally renowned artist Christian Awe, took place in the Lichtenberg neighbourhood in former East Berlin, where Awe grew up and still has his studio. Social Creatives members teamed up with local youth and volunteers to transform the wall of a youth cultural centre.

The group’s founder Faris Basharahil sees art less in terms of an outcome or end product, and more as a process for achieving national development and inclusivity. Invoking the earliest roots of art in ancient cave paintings, Social Creatives aims to bring art back to the grassroots level. Furthermore, in referring to the group’s work as “legal vandalism”, Basharahil expresses his intention to transform perceptions of street art in general, as well as community engagement with public space.

This year’s PantoneMyArt 2014 exhibition at the art-supporting tcc at 51 Circular Road features works from 8 artists expressing optical illusions in 8 predominant Pantone colours of their choice. Their works are set to take the expression ‘off the wall’ further than ever before, as they present two-dimensional artworks that give a three-dimensional visual illusion.

On show till 6 October 2014, this highly creative exhibition covers the full two floors, including the windows of the tcc outlet. The captivating works are set to leap at the viewer, so visitors should be prepared for mind blowing multi-impact works reaching out to them like never before. The likes of radioactive yellow monsters by talented Sloth and red Pandas from the ‘animal instincts’ of artist Ziqi, are sure to capture the attention of all.

A different corner features an impressive window creation of a breathtaking cityscape by Race; other walls show an anamorphic street design from Singapore’s leading street artist Ben Qwek, an animated graffiti work from Clogtwo!, as well as digital experiences from Dale. Slacsatu ‘draws stuff’ (in his own words) all over the place while Lim Zi Sin presents her paper-cut talents in a large all white cut-out architectural creation.

The 8 exhibiting artists are: Ben Qwek, Clogtwo!, Dale, Race, Slacsatu, Sloth, Lim Zi Sin and Ziqi.

Visitors are encouraged to interact with the artworks, and have their photographs taken as they stand at the assigned focal point that brings the artworks to life! If this sounds too illusionary to be true, come and witness it for yourself, whip out your smartphones and cameras and share these optical illusion photos on your FB, Twitter and Instagram #pantonemyart.

The PantoneMyArt 2014 exhibition celebrates ten years of collaboration between tcc The Connoisseur Concerto and art-management.com, a period which tcc’s Business Development Manager (Branding & Arts) Charles Wong says it has been “A time of much creativity and imagination for the outlet. This event promises a great deal of breathtaking works and displays from some of the most talented and creative 2D, 3D and digital artists based in Singapore.”

"Manila is a city of extremes, and at a time that only the extreme makes an impression, it still manages to shock. To wander into its streets, to be among the crowds, to be caught in the din of history that barrages you at every corner is to participate in a drama that began centuries ago, but whose cries and whispers echo resound well into the present. The sacred and the profane, the amatory smiles and the feral gaze are all on display here, as the unforgiving sun of its days give way to the artificial neon of night." Erwin Romulo, 2014

ones, Crisologo presents us the most accurate picture of contemporary art in Manila, a city of extremes and shifting artistic landscapes. The exhibition creates a new platform for discussion about the state of the arts in the Philippines and its relationship with tradition, religion, film noir, pop imagery, contemporary urban culture and the culture clash that happens in between.

The exhibition includes works by the following artists: Mike Adrao, Gabriel Barredo, Zean Cabangis, Jigger Cruz, Alfredo Esquillo Jr., Dexter Fernandez, Kawayan De Guia, Jose Legaspi, Pow Martinez, Alwin Reamillo, Norberto Roldan, Jose Tence Ruiz, Tatong Torres, Santiago Bose.

The group show also marks ARNDT Singapore's opening of their second gallery space at Gillman Barracks. The exhibition is distributed over both locations: Block 22, and Block 9 on the 3rd floor.

The Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) presents the rich versatility of the medium at Di Legno's first printmaking exhibition this month.

Printmaking was first recognized as an art form in the 18th century but has not gained as much popularity versus other art mediums. The aim of the show is to give prominence for the under-represented art of original printmaking and to present to the art community in Singapore the boundless possibilities of the traditional medium.

The participating artists for the show are Ambie Abaño, Pandy Aviado, Mars Bugaoan, Benjie Torrado Cabrera, Joey Cobcobo, Fil Delacruz, Noell EL Farol, Lenore Lim and Angelo Magno. Three of the artists have received the Thirteen Artists Award, a prestigious award granted by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Whilst at different stages of their artistic careers, the artists share a common passion towards printmaking and are constantly pushing themselves towards new boundaries.

Printmaking, as a mechanical process, is often subject to series of shifts or interruptions which arise from different contexts. The relational nature of both mechanical and expressive methods of printmaking practices can be characterized by series of change or interruptions and disruptions in-between spaces. Working along the theme “Transition”, the artists explore these relationships with unexpected and undefined spaces. These spaces allow them to navigate ways of moving transitions, to discover new truths and to set their perception in any way possible in order to get through in-between spaces causing possible traces of the authority of images. Synonymous with truth, they are irrefutable.

The show displays 22 images of distinctively different artistic expressions created using various reproductive printmaking techniques including woodcut, silkscreen, rubber cut, lithography and more immediacy approaches like engraving on poly-carbonate with liquid ink, and transfer printing. The works exemplify the versatility of the medium, they invite the visitors to explore the medium and the skills of the Filipino artists, rendering a whole new meaning to contemporary printmaking in the 21st century.

The Philippine Association of Printmakers remains as one of the pioneering art groups in the country today. In its almost 50 years, PAP has undertaken outreach programs, inter-agency collaborations, and publications.

Sensorium 360° is an exhibition that calls upon the full range of human senses and explores how sensory experiences locate us in understanding the world and knowing the self.

In the realm of visual art and daily life, vision and sight tend to dominate yet other senses are equally indispensable in enabling us to apprehend the world within and without – taking in its pleasures and pains, even as we absorb data/information. These physiological capacities are also sources for creativity, such as in the fields of music, gastronomy or even perfumery, and contemporary artists, in crossing disciplines, have often drawn upon the sensorial spectrum.

While the five senses of sight (ophthalmoception), sound/hearing (audioception), taste (gustaoception), touch (tactioception) and smell (olfacoception) are the most commonly known, other identified other senses include the ability to detect temperature (themoception), kinesthetic sense (proprioception), pain (nociception), balance (equilibrioception) and time (chronoception). Less easily explained but no less compelling is the ‘extrasensory’ perception of the ‘sixth sense’ – intuition or premonition.

The exhibition presents several newly commissioned works and loans by artists from Singapore, Southeast Asia and beyond, with each work and gallery dedicated to one specific sensory experience. In unfolding the varied phenomenological dimensions of senses and their sensibilities, Sensorium 360° also seeks to highlight three facets of the sensorial experience: its relationship to health, therapy and healing (notably touch); synesthesia (how one sense translates into another, e.g. sight into sound), and how one sense often triggers other aspects of human cognition (e.g. memory or danger).

Spanning the fields of art, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, phenomenology and philosophy, Sensorium 360° is a visual art exhibition that moves beyond vision to ‘see’ the world through the other senses, and experience it in the round.

Celebrating Local ArtGalerie Belvedere presents Singaporean Talents: A Celebration

Nine Singaporean modern and contemporary painters present their work from 4 August to 27 September at Galerie Belvedere, presenting an opportunity to discover the artistic dynamism of the City-State.

Multi-talented Dick Lee (b.1957) has firmly established himself as a composer and performer, often recognised through his works as the spokesperson for the New Asian generation. Lee studied fashion and graduated from the Harrow School of Art in London. He launched his career as a visual artist with his first exhibition in 2013, entitled “Imperfect Memory” at Galerie Belvedere.

Sarkasi Said (b.1940) is considered one of Singapore’s foremost batik painters. Called the “Baron of Batik”, he is known for his audacious and vibrant abstract style, and his mastery in unconventional wax-resist techniques. His works are part of many distinguished public and private collections including those of the Singapore Art Museum, the Sultan of Johor and the Sultan of Brunei.

Chen Wen Hsi (b.1906-1991) is one of the celebrated pioneer artists of Singapore, known for his avant-garde painting style. Chen experimented and developed a variety of styles inspired by Fauvism and even Cubism. During his career, he has held 38 solo exhibitions in London, Beijing, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s Second Generation artists. National Gallery Singapore has his works in its permanent collection.

Wong Keen (b.1942) is an artist who spans two worlds and two philosophies – Asian tradition and American individualism. The synthesis of Eastern and Western art makes his works stimulating to Asians and adds a facet of mystery for Western viewers. The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) commemorated him with an exhibition called "A Singapore Abstract Expressionist" in 2007. The Museum also has sixty-three of his works as part of its permanent collection.

A Singaporean Maestro Painter, Sun Yee's (b.1909 – 2009) works have been met with exhibition successes in France and Japan. A competent artist of Chinese brush and oil medium, she had exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1953. She established the Singapore Academy of Arts and was an active participant in the emerging Malayan art world. In her art and writings, Sun Yee advocated the development of localised visual

It took all of 66 summers for KY Huang to return to his first love – art. The upcoming exhibition fittingly titled “Catching Up” is KY Huang’s valiant attempt at making up for lost time.

Held at 7Adam’s historic intimate colonial black and black house, this is symbolic as it coincides with the debut of his Singapore Series. In light of the nation’s 49th Birthday, this series tells the story of Singapore’s development post colonisation, the era which KY Huang grew up in. He opts for a classic contemporary approach as he hopes future generations can identify with his work, remember Singapore’s humble beginnings and appreciate what it is today.

KY Huang's fascination with maps and topography from his days as a Boy Scout sees him featuring the beautiful cityscape in his work. Using a more whimsical take on the paintings, Singapore’s changing coastlines through land reclamation is juxtaposed against a barcode background. While seemingly straightforward, the barcode symbolizes the embracing of new technologies and innovations while its different colours celebrate the multi-cultural and multi-racial demography that we have.

Starting as a sculptor in 2007, he today alternates between painting and sculpting. While it is rare for an artiste to excel in more than one medium, KY Huang believes this serves as a good breather, allowing him to find fresh perspectives. He takes creative references from memorable life experiences, and God’s words and handicraft (nature and the human community).

The epiphany to create art only came after retirement despite KY Huang always having had an affinity with art. Discovering his flair at a young age, he could sketch and draw with an ease that was natural to him. Upon finishing his education, KY Huang chose to take on the safer route, joining the corporate world and art took a back seat.

Aware that he has much to catch up on, KY Huang is dedicated to creating grand and beautiful pieces of art in the hopes that his audience would take away the very same things that art has given him – inspiration, earnest joy and a smile.

Comprising of sculptures and paintings, the exhibition features a specially curated selection of his finest works, from his first series Having Fun to his latest Singapore Series.

SIFA 2014The Singapore International Festival Of Arts returns with an eye on the past and a pulse on the future

Having played a symbiotic and catalytic role in the development of Singapore’s artistic and cultural landscape for the past three decades, the Singapore Arts Festival has rebranded itself as the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA), reflecting its refreshed focus on internationally acclaimed acts, and spring-boarding local productions onto a global stage.

Set to enchant people from all walks of life as they engage intimately with the arts, the Festival encourages audiences to understand that the performing arts is about stories; from familiar stories that stem from daily emotions and transform into powerful motivations, to wider perspectives which reflect on histories to actively mould our futures. The much-anticipated Festival, themed Legacy and the Expanded Classic, runs from 12 August to 21 September, organised by the Arts House Limited (AHL), and directed by celebrated theatre director Ong Keng Sen – marking the first time the national festival has introduced an artist as the Festival Director.

“It gives us great honour to bring Singapore’s pinnacle arts festival back this year, so that we may exemplify how art is all around us, and exists in everything that we do – from the music we listen to and the media we consume, to the way we dress and decorate the spaces around us. SIFA’s return marks the debunking of the misconception that the world of arts is exclusive or inaccessible, with the Festival set up to engage audiences from all walks of life in conversations around the arts, rather than just talking at them.” says AHL’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms Lee Chor Lin.

SIFA 2014’s outstanding line-up includes 12 eminent productions spread over six Festival weeks; deconstructing common notions of human dignity and vulnerability, reimagining childhood classics and famous tragedies, and treading the realms of history versus the future, reality versus fantasy.

Bringing these elements to life through drama, dance and music, are the awe inspiring groups such as the Berliner Ensemble and London Sinfonietta; renown masters such as artists Robert Wilson and Jerome Bel, alongside respected playwright Amir Reza Koohestani; and esteemed performance artists Mamela Nyamza and Nikhil Chopra, to name a few.

‘Home’ is a concept that many of us can relate to. Bringing forth memories of comfort and at other times, distress, this complex dichotomy is the focus of Singaporean artist Michael Lee’s solo exhibition Machine for Living Dying In, on view from 16 August to 21 September at Yavuz Fine Art.

The subject of ‘home’ is a recurrent theme in Lee’s on-going exploration of the relationship between urban memory and fiction. Challenging the conception of the home as a place of comfort and safety, Lee explores “the gap between home as we have been told, and home as we experience it.”

The exhibition features 5 new works and a recent piece in a various media, including collages, installations and a video work. The show's title piece, Machine for Living Dying In (2014) is a neon text work that captures the artist's preference for ambiguity and complexity. In his text, Lee allows two similar yet opposing statements – "A house is a machine for living in," by Swiss-born architect Le Corbusier (1923), and "A house is for dying," by American architecture professor Douglas Darden (1993) – to coexist. This not only exemplifies the ambiguous associations

towards the home we may have, but also acknowledges life and death as aspects of the same process. After all, to live is to endure the prospect of encountering death at any turn.

Working along a similar tangent, "Hazards" (2014) is a series of collages that reflect the reality that there is really no absolutely safe place or activity, not even staying put at one home. One collage on view is skull mask created by folding and cutting a found print of Diego Velasquez's Las Meninas (1656). Gone Solo (2013) is a 14-minute pure-text mute video that puts together 45 cases of people who died alone. Triggered by a 2012 news report of the death of his army friend, Lee presents solitude and death as aspects of reality that often arouse pity or disgust, but are difficult to pass final judgment upon.

Also featured in the exhibition are two material- and site-specific installations that integrate Lee's focus of ‘home’ into the physical space of the gallery. Allowing material to offer instructions is a method Lee has developed over the years, one partly inspired by Louis Khan's listening to a brick and hearing it say, "I like [to be] an arch." The installation Script for Unperformed Performance No. 1 (2014) consists of a found hammock tied to two gallery columns and text that is suggestive of how one might use and interact with the object. The work responds to both material and the architectural demands of the gallery, and through the text's content and placement, asks viewers to respond to both as well. A second installation, Diagonals (2014) comprises abstract forms on curtains that will grace the gallery passageways. A symbolic warning sign, the work blurs the line between art and function, pushing the viewer to question whether what they are seeing is purely a piece of artwork or an indication of impending danger.

There is much to experience in Machine for Living Dying In. By putting a new twist on a subject that we may have thought ourselves familiar with, Michael Lee gives viewers a lot to take home.

used for the festival’s logo and shared across all of the Biennale's platforms.

From 22 – 31 August 2014, she participates in this year’s Singapore Night Festival organised by the National Museum, where she unveils a new installation called Landscape by Landscape in collaboration with Singapore’s Institut Français, followed by her solo exhibition at Art Plural Gallery from 3 September – 3 October 2014, where she presents her latest series of works called Couleur du Temps.

Couleur du Temps series is inspired by a 1974 French film by Jacques Demy. In the film, there is a sequence about this idea of “color of time”, a surreal image where Catherine Deneuve is wearing a dress on which, as a moving pattern, clouds are passing by.

“'Couleur du temps' means 'Colour of time' and also 'Colour of the weather'. In French the word 'Temps' means both time and weather and I like this idea that my work deals with both. I mean the relation of the two: time and weather. I think it’s very interesting, imagining what an image of a landscape could look like.” the artist says.

The series Couleur du Temps deals with the question of horizon, as one of painting’s most basic acts in defining time, space, and a scale of infinity. By applying an extended version of watercolour-technique on untreated linen canvas, de Bailliencourt turns the perspective of a romantic tradition of landscape painting, the imagination of a distant past, towards an open futurist vision. The untreated linen fiber reacts to the painting material in an extremely sensitive and almost uncontrollable way. At the same time, every action is irreversibly visible, laying bare the entire procedure of producing an image of a landscape. Through an elaborate method of repetitive movements, of slow sedimentation of colour and of recording the process itself, the artist establishes the landscape with a single horizontal line, reminding the work of Hiroshi Sugimoto. The paintings are built up as a complex layering of somehow “responsive” shades of colour. Exploring the idea of a third category beyond contradictions such as nature and artificiality, Agathe de Bailliencourt follows an intuitive exploration through a non-representational space. More than creating an image, Agathe de Bailliencourt is interested in creating an environment that is open for the viewer.

Jason Lim is one of Singapore's most respected performance artists and a leading contemporary ceramist. From 22 August to 5 September, Gajah Gallery presents his 20-year survey exhibition, curated by Daniela Beltrani.

The curatorial core of this exhibition hinges on two complementary areas of focus: the first (Timeline), dynamic by nature, has a purely art historical, non-commercial approach and probes into Lim's performance art practice from its very beginning to the present, considering his evolution and offering a meaningful context to the photos exhibited in the second section of the exhibition. The second section (Fine Art Photography) proposes a selection of photographs, as unintentional, distilled and sublimated moments extrapolated from the artist's main series of performances in his more recent and mature phase.

The exhibition therefore unravels in two clear segments of time-journey from 1994 to 2014, complete with text, documentation (photos and videos) and ephemera (relics, catalogues, invites, etc) and an in-depth and focused presentation of selected performances from three series: Duet with Light, Duet with Thread, and Last Drop.

Lim's abandonment of objects with inner associations or symbolic meanings and ultimately his direction towards essentiality has freed his performances from attachment to any cultural,

religious, political, or social significance, making them potentially understood and appreciated by anybody.

The artist's universal poetic language does not require any prior knowledge of art or even of him as a performance artist. It is a language immediately understood, because it taps into the deepest recesses of the best part of our humanity. And this poetic quality is perhaps what has secured his past and continuing success abroad and keeps him travelling to all sides of the Earth sharing his universal art with audiences from the most disparaged backgrounds.

Jason Lim was born in Singapore in 1966. He attained his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Lasalle College of the Arts) in 2003. His repertoire of works encompasses ceramics, photography, video art, installation art and performance art. In 2007, he presented his work Walking Sticks at the 4th World Ceramics Biennale in Korea winning the Juror’s Prize. In the same year, he presented Just Dharma and Light Weight at the Singapore Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale.

In his artistic practice, Pu Jie attempts to use fragments of collective memory as well as his own personal experiences to compose a narrative of a contemporary way of existence in the shadow of China's recent past. Avoiding trappings of both nostalgia and amnesia, he references instead life in the rapidly expanding urban metropolis and its oscillating imageries of eroticism, political propaganda and ancient myths. Monochromatic colours in red, yellow and blue dominate his large-scale paintings. The different layers of imagery are brought together in the picture by the unifying aesthetic expression, which is a blend of pop and comic strips.

tcc-artshowcase Simply Scibbly by Vince Low. Vince Low’s work started about three years ago when his role as an Illustrator

with a Design Agency required material for a Dys-lexic advertising campaign. Himself a dyslexic, Vince felt immediate empathy with the campaign as he knew many famous people had used their dyslexia to overcome any perceived drawbacks. Thus evolved his first ‘Scribble Art’ production, pen-line portraits of Einstein, Picasso and John Lennon, after which the art form took off big time. Till 06 Oct

tcc-artshowcase Delphine Bernard. French abstract painter Delphine Bernard explores flux of energies and power of

creativity through very expressive artworks. Painting with colours and emotions, the artist uses her savage and undisciplined touch to captures primitive forces: her fast strokes runs over the canvas and resemble a frantic and feverish waltz of pigments and forms, thoughts and desires. Her palettes suggest duality, from dark and strong tons mirror-ing scenes of battles and war to vivid and vibrant colours of her florid, joyful works, passing by pastels of her delicate fairy-tell sceneries.
