By Tanya Randall 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Jody Sheffield of Ogden, Utah, is back to her winning ways with a $3,952 victory at the $10,000-added Sisters Rodeo, held June 8-10 in Sisters, Ore. Sheffield and her homegrown star Skip The Finances (“Zoey”) turned in a 17.43 to finish nearly 2/10ths ahead of the triumvirate of Danna Stovner, Brenda Mays and Christina Richman. The three ladies posted identical times of 17.61 to each pocket $2,568.80 of the $18,376.80 total purse. “She ran really good,” Sheffield said of Zoey. “The ground was a little bit dry and she felt like she had a little bit of hard time getting a hold of it, but she must of handled it better than the rest.” Making the championship extra special was how Zoey handled the walk-in start. Sisters uses a corner gate, so you have to enter the arena to setup your run. In the past, those setup starts haven’t been Zoey’s forte. “Normally she doesn’t like to be held back very well,” Sheffield explained, “so we usually ended up getting in a fight in those type situations. So, I decided to back her in and see how she handled it, and she did really well.” Sheffield is happy to have her mare back working well after a rather dry winter run in Texas. “I came home after Texas and really didn’t go too much until the past few weeks when our circuit rodeos started up,” she said. “As soon as we got her home (from Texas) we took her to the vet and ran some tests and stuff. We found a couple things and made some adjustments, did some ranching on her. Finally, she’s coming around. These past few weeks she’s really coming back to her old self. I’m really excited to be able to start the summer that way.” Sheffield is getting ready to go out on the road for the Fourth of July run. She’ll head to Canada for the lucrative rodeos in Ponoka and Airdrie before dropping back into the states for the Gateway rodeos—Cody, Wyo., and Red Lodge and Livingston, Mont. “I’m going to skip a couple of circuit rodeos and kind of work my way back toward Canada,” said Sheffield, who makes her first run at the Calgary Stampede on July 9. Last year, the duo’s Calgary experience went viral with barrel racers watching their horrific wreck on youtube.com. Sheffield and Zoey somersaulted after finishing their run and they later turned out of their remaining run. “It’s not very often that a horse falls running in a straight line,” she said with a wry laugh. “I’m really surprised that both of us came out of it as good as we did. It could have been really bad. I re- ally feel like last year was a fluke thing. I think she just took a wrong step at the wrong time. I’ve never felt worried about it on her since. I think she’ll be just fine.” Although she hasn’t ruled out a run for this year’s WNFR, Shef- field’s realistic about her chances. Rather she’ll focus on making it back in 2013. “We’d have to have a really, really good summer,” she said. “If not, we’ll dang sure give it a shot next year. I’d sure like to get back there.” While Zoey, an 8-year-old daughter of Financially out of Skip Chris Coy, by Skipabar Crystola, is Sheffield’s sole rodeo horse at the moment, she does have some young talent in development. “I’ve got some colts that I’ve been entering in the jackpots around home,” said Sheffield, who is sponsored by Cowgirl Tuff, Burns Saddlery, The Pawing Bracelet, RodeoGenuis.com and Erics- son Equine of Scottsdale, Ariz. “I’ll think they’ll be ready to rodeo on sometime this summer. They’re all kind of at different stages. I’ve got one that we just picked up from a friend of ours that wanted us to take him to some rodeos, so hopefully we can get him ready and he can back me up a little bit. But, for now, it’s Zoey still.” Developing her young talent and taking advantage of Zoey while she’s young and sound, were two of the reasons that Sheffield quit her job as a marketing coordinator with US Foods before heading to Texas for the winter run this year. “We had so many good horses that weren’t getting the time that they needed because I was sitting at my desk,” she said. “My JUNE 12, 2012 Volume 7 : Issue 23 Published Weekly Online at www.BarrelRacingReport.com - Since 2007 In this issue... • CNFR Barrel Racing, page 2 • Nutralix Barrel Daze, page 11 • West Virginia Futurity, page 16 • Ultimate Barrel Race, page 22 • WRAPN3, page 26 fast horses, fast news fast horses, fast news Jody Sheffield and Skip The Finances Bank at Sisters Rodeo Pro Rodeos Continued on Page 4 Hotters Dot Skip The Finances Skipbar Supreme Skip Chris Coy Skipbar Crystola 2004 Bay Mare Gold Fingers Note Spanish Etch Skipun Flame Dotties Tears si 91 Rocket Wrangler si 97 Financially si 98 Dash For Cash si 114 Find A Buyer tb Reb’s Policy tb Spanish Tears Rider/Owner: Jody Sheffield; Breeder: Jesse Sheffield

By Tanya Randall With just two futurities under her belt in 2012, Jackie Dotson’s Rocknroll Frenchgirl (“BB”) is quickly making up for lost time. Trained and ridden by Matt Boice, BB fi nished 20th at the Old Fort Days Futurity in Fort Smith, Ark., and followed it up with a win at the $5,500-added West Virginia Quarter Horse Association’s Barrel Futurity, held June 8-10 at the Winfi eld Riding Club Arena in Win-fi eld, W.Va. Boice and BB placed second in both rounds en route to the aver-age win and $3,179 of the $12,255 total purse. “She ran pretty good, but got a little close on her third barrel and she still shut the clock off,” Boice said of their fi rst run. “The second run, I put her out a little wider going to the third, and that was probably her money barrel.” Boice said the WVQHA Futurity Championship was better than making the Top 40 at Fort Smith. “It was a small futurity, but it was tough,” said Boice. In fact, barely 4/100ths of a second separated three—Troy Crumrine and Costly Crystal, Boice and BB and Pete One and VF A Live De-sign—in the fi rst go. “Coming into the second go, we were all right there together. To win against those guys, it was pretty rewarding.” Boice, Fremont, Ohio, has trained horses for the public since he was a teenager. He’s had futurity horses in the past, but he’d usually send them out to be run by his good friend Cody Bauserman. He said BB is one of the nicest horses that he’s had to ride. “Where I’m at, I don’t get out there a lot,” said Boice, who wanted to thank God, his wife Julie and their two children as well as BB’s owner for their support. “When you have kids they tie you down, so I haven’t really been going the last couple of years. When people send me a colt, they just want to see if it will make it or not. I don’t usually get as good of bred colts as this one is.” Bred by Judy Woods’ Cross Creek Ranch in Ashville, Ohio, BB
is by Frenchmans Guy out of Spear The Cash, by Roll The Cash. Dotson, who is big fan of Roll The Cash-bred horses, bought the mare when she was still in foal with BB. “That’s actually the reason I bought the mare,” said Dotson, Johnstown, Ohio. “She was already bred to Frenchmans Guy. I knew the baby would be worth something but I was more inter-ested in the mare. I had plans on selling the baby, and I wanted to do it before she was a 2-year-old because I felt she too nice for me to have. I wasn’t going a lot and I had some health issues too in

She was priced really reason-able, and I think things work out the way they’re meant to be.” Dotson might have had second thoughts about keeping her when she starting the mare under saddle. “About the tenth ride, she dumped me pretty hard,” she laughed. “I didn’t realize that I had a concussion for a couple months.”After Bryan Mulligan got BB broke to ride, Boice started BB on the pattern as a late 3-year-old. “He never made me any promises,” said Dotson, who wanted to thank her husband Denny for his support. “So I was pleasantly surprised when he told me last fall to enter her in the Juvenile in Oklahoma City.” Unfortunately, BB came down with a respiratory ailment that they thought they had in hand by the Juvenile. When the mare worked but didn’t clock, Dotson took her back to the vet. “She run like 44th in the average,” Boice recalled. “She brought her back and got her scoped, and her lungs were full of junk. That kind of impressed me a little bit that she would even try to go out there and run like that.” Diagnosed with allergies and managed with shots, BB started to turn the corner for Boice in April at the MVP in Wilmington, Ohio. Even so, they didn’t have great expectations for the Old Fort Days Futurity. “She’d been working good,” Boice said, “but we didn’t know how solid she would be out there. She fared well. She seems like she keeps getting better. “She likes to be left alone during the week. She doesn’t like a lot of training and tuning on. It took us a while to fi gure that out. The fresher the better, you know.” Dotson said she appreciates Boice for his talent, willingness to give the mare the time she needed after her illness and patience to fi gure out how to keep her happy and working.
Boice and Dotson don’t have a heavy schedule planned for BB, but it looks like her next futurity will be the Ecurie 5-55 Drum-mond Futurity in Canada. Outside of a few remaining futurities, Dotson hasn’t really put a lot of thought into BB’s future. “I’ve had some offers on her, but I have no intentions of selling her,” said Dotson, who wanted to thank her vets Aaron Stingle and Michael Bowman for getting BB on the mend, the Boices for their time and care of BB, her husband, and God for His blessings. “Hopefully, she’ll make me a nice open horse when Matt gets done with her.”

At the WRAPN3 As Good As Nick Gets Barrel Race at the Rose Palace in San Antonio, TX on June 9 & 10 the fastest time of the weekend was run by thoroughbred Valid Lark and jockey Catherine Asmussen. It is common to see thoroughbreds in the pedigrees of barrel horses but it is not very common to see “pure” thorough-breds like Valid Lark winning barrel races. Since leading thoroughbred trainer, Steve Asmussen, is her uncle and her whole family is involved in thoroughbreds, it would make sense that Catherine Asmussen would be running a thoroughbred. Steve Asmussen is a leading thoroughbred race trainer of such champion horses as Curlin and Rachel Alexandra and was the Eclipse Award recipient of the Outstanding Trainer in 2008. Valid Lark is sired by Lanes End Texas Stallion, Valid Expectations, who stands for a $7,500 stud fee, has sired the earners of over $29 mil-lion, and has been the Leading Texas Sire of thoroughbred runners every year from 2002 to 2011. If Valid Expectations keeps siring barrel horses like Valid Lark, he might just get to be a barrel horse sire too! Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home by Mike Morrison by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)
These days you hear a lot about “step” programs. You know the kind that promise success with just about everything if you just follow a few simple steps.
They tell you how to make your horse a winner with 10 easy steps. Then there are the steps to take to be more popular, more prosperous, happier and how to meet your soul mate, etc. But, they are missing the most important step of all and that’s the step you take to get close to God. Joyce Meyer, well know evangelist, put it this way, “Putting God in fi rst place is the key to experiencing His best.” When you turn your back on God, any way you go is the wrong direction. Some people think they can do great things on their own but Scripture tells us differently. John 15:5 shows the words of Jesus when He said “apart from me, you can do nothing.” Lamentations 3:25 tells us the Lord is good tho those who search for Him and depend on Him. God loved us so much that He gave His only son so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish
but have eternal life (John 3:16). To have your needs met and live a contented, fearless life, the most important step you can take is to make Jesus the Lord of your life and let Him take charge of things for you. Read Philippians 4:6-7 which tells us not to worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hears and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
