BRR: If your horse was a famous celebrity, which one would it be?Bettis: Dwayne Johnson because Smash is “Rock” solid!
BRR: What is your most common riding/training schedule with your rodeo horse leading up to a big rodeo?
Bettis: I pasture ride more than anything. It clears both of our minds. I maybe do the barrels once a week depending on what I have that week or how he’s working.
BRR: What quality or qualities does your horse posses that makes him/her an NFR horse that is different than other horses you have had or trained? Bettis: I’ve been blessed with some great horses. But Smash holds something a little closer to my heart because we have achieved a lot of milestones together, mostly due to his grit and heart.

BRR: Which horses are you taking with to the finals?Lockhart: An Oakie With Cash, (Louie) and Rosa’s Cantina CC (Rosa) owned by Alan Woodbury, will be going with me.Buckskins both weighing over 1200 pounds, Louie being close to 15.1 hands and Rosa close to 15.2 hands. They look so much alike in many ways, but are totally unrelated!
BRR: What are your horse(s) approximate lifetime earnings?Lockhart: Louie is around the $2 million dollar mark, and Rosa probably $40,000.
BRR: What two bits do you have that you can’t live without?Lockhart: I absolutely love my Classic Equine Simplicity bits, and use many other short shank gag bits as well.
BRR: If you could have one quote or Bible verse on your trailer as you went down the road to share with people, what would it be?Lockhart: Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
BRR: If your horse was a famous celebrity, which one would it be?Lockhart: Louie is like Bullseye from Toy Story- my trusty side kick that is like a playful/naughty dog whom has aided me in all my adventures! Rosa is like Jennifer Aniston- beautiful, funny, and VERY theatrical!
BRR: What is your most common riding/training schedule with your rodeo horse leading up to a big rodeo? Lockhart: I basically try to ride 6 days a week, whether it be during
the regular season or before the NFR. I do a lot of long trotting and some galloping while pasture riding on the ranch, anywhere from 20-40 minutes.
BRR: What quality or qualities does your horse posses that makes him/her an NFR horse that is different than other horses you have had or trained? Lockhart: Louie’s quality is definitely his consistency...it is like no other I have ever experienced. Both horses have big hearts and truly want to please, Louie is very efficient and Rosa is really fast.

had or trained? Tonozzi: This is the first time I am going to the NFR on a horse that I trained so thats a really big deal for me. Stitch didn’t love the Thomas & Mack and Duke did. The last time I was at the NFR, Duke had just gotten hurt so I rode a bunch of young horses and it was not my best showing. I know Steeley likes small pens and she did well with Jana Bean last year so I’m super excited to get my chance to ride her.

#12 Tillar Murray, $86,019Age: 21 - Hometown: Fort Worth, TX - Joined WPRA: 2015Career earnings: $165,935 - NFR Qualifications: 1 (2017) 2017 Highlights: Won Albuquerque, NM & Helldorado Days
BRR: Which horses are you taking with to the finals?Murray: My parents, Trina and Fulton Murray, own all my horses. Dirty Dan Stinson (Dirty Dan), 6 years old, sorrel Lil Gracie Dude (Tic Tac), 17 years old, sorrelRoyal Star Commander (Commander), 9 years old, sorrel All three have pretty different styles. Although Dirty Dan tends to be really ratey, he has only competed in a handful of small arenas and tends to be a little freer running when he runs consecutively in the same pen. Commander is pretty unpredictable and can be really spooky so the Thomas and Mack may be a little overwhelming for him, but he is so fast that he makes up for his mistakes. Tic Tac is by far my most consistent horse and the one I have known for the longest. I have had Tic Tac since middle school so I have had many experiences running him in all types of pens and different set ups.
BRR: What are your horse(s) approximate lifetime earnings?Murray: Lil Gracie Dude (Tic Tac), over $125,000 Dirty Dan Stinson (Dirty Dan), about $75,000 Royal Star Commander (Commander), over $200,000
BRR: What two bits do you have that you can’t live without?Murray: Ed and Martha Wright’s pretzel bit: I put it on every horse that has a tendency to be a little pushy like Tic Tac. Ed and Martha Wright’s 3 piece twisted roller: I ride this bit on horses that are a little lighter mouthed like Dirty Dan.
BRR: If you could have one quote or Bible verse on your trailer as you went down the road to share with people, what would it be?Murray: 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or what-ever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
BRR: If your horse was a famous celebrity, which one would it be?Murray: Commander would be Usain Bolt. I don’t think I’ll ever ride a horse that is as quick and fast as Commander. Dirty Dan would be Elvis Presley. I’ve always thought he is the prettiest horse and he just has an attitude about him like he knows
he’s cool. Tic Tac would be Tom Brady. Year after year Tic Tac only seems to get better. At 17 years old, Tic Tac seems to be feeling and run-ning his very best. He still prances around and plays like he did when I bought him 8 years ago.
BRR: What is your most common riding/training schedule with your rodeo horse leading up to a big rodeo? Murray: My training schedule has no pattern or consistency to it. Given that I am a full time student at the University of Texas and my school work takes priority over rodeo, my riding revolves around this component of my life. I try to go back to my ranch as much as possible to practice but my ranch is 3 hours away from

Austin, which makes it difficult to go back more than two or three times a week. Thankfully Martha Wright keeps my horses during the school year and more than makes up for my slacking off.
BRR: What quality or qualities does your horse posses that makes him/her an NFR horse that is different than other horses you have had or trained? Murray: All three of my horses have so much try and grit. Even though we try our best to make them feel comfortable on the road, the rodeo life is hard on horses. I can think of many, many nights during the summer when I was exhausted and ready to be home. I know the horses, who have to stand in the trailer and stay at a new place day after day, feel even more so this way. It takes a special kind of horse to tolerate this lifestyle and give it their best each run. Ed Wright always told me the prizes should really go to the horses. I couldn’t agree more. They are really the champions in my mind.

Headin’ For Home by Sherry Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)
We have successfully eaten all the good stuff at Thanksgiv-ing and we are now heading into the Christmas count-down…..
So. How do you approach this next month? Do you steal yourself against the onslaught of Christmas carols? (I’ve never really liked them, but I sing along for a while and then slap myself!) Do you worry and fret over the money and how on earth you are going to afford everything? Are you a Scrooge and find yourself resentful and grumpy for 30 days? Or do you enter into it with childlike faith, joy, peace and excitement? Honestly, I’m a little bit of all of them, but mostly I love it! I’m a giver, so it blesses my heart to be able to make a dream come true for someone! But I’m pretty black and white so it really gets my panties in a bunch when someone wishes me “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”! The Scrooge in me wants to slap THEM!
Let’s gallop into these next days with Jesus in our heart and bring His joy everywhere we go! We can make a real difference in lives around us if we let HIM shine. WE ARE CELEBRATING JESUS’ BIRTH! If we keep the main thing, the main thing, then all the other stuff will pale in comparison. No money for a present? Give of yourself. No time? Stay off your phone for one hour. Sad? Smile! And NO slapping!!!
