Sidercad is an Italian Engineering and Information Technology Companyactive in the international market since 1986.

The name Sidercad, which comes from the combination of “sider” (steel)and “cad” (computer-aided Design) refers to the initial mission of thecompany, established as a part of the Ilva group, to encourage the use ofsteel by developing automatic design techniques, in order to ensurereliability and speed of design.

The initial experience in the design of steel structures grew over the timeand gave rise to an all-round Engineering division and anindependent Information Technology division.

Sidercad actually consists of two separate but synergic departments:ENGINEERING and INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.

The global market requires increasingly shorter production times, withconstantly increasing quality standards. This process of management canbe based on high-level IT tools that deal with specialized aspects andcoordination systems that allow full use to be made of any previouslydeveloped data.

Since the beginning, the company has acted with the aim of maximisingreliability through the continuous development of work organization andthe development and systematic application of efficient procedures, whichare combined to reduce time and costs through careful monitoring.

Over the years, consequently, a “Sidercad method” has been establishedto reach utmost reliability in rapid timeframes and low costs.

In 1986 Sidercad was established as a Consortium within ILVA group.

In 1991 Sidercad became a joint-stock Company.

In 1995 the Company left the State Holding circle following one of the firstmanagement buy-outs in Italy.

After 1997 Sidercad applied for and obtained by the RINA body ISO-9000certification of quality management system both for the Engineering and forthe Information Technology departments (certificate # 672/97).

Since April 2001 Sidercad has been promoting the creation of anEngineering and Architecture Consortium aimed at gathering engineeringand architecture companies into a permanent association, in order toparticipate in tenders at national and international level and toacquire major orders providing extensive expertise and substantial resources.

During its life Sidercad has achieved a significant background andexperience in the fields of Engineering and Information services andcollaborated with important Italian and foreign Companies.

Sidercad makes use of several hardware platforms:

Electric supply for all equipment is guaranteed by a 20000 va. UPS system.

Servers are placed in a designated area which assures all necessary environmental conditions to operate.

The total storage capacity is 5 TB on redundant array with different raid levels.

The backup archive is managed by Veeam on a daily basis, which is filed on NAS and removable cartridge.

System management of the above equipment is performed by inside staff, which guarantees prompt feedbacks and highavailability. Both HW and SW infrastructure are able to deal with production needs, allow big project developments andprovides hosting service to the customers at the same time. Each and every workstation is part of a local gigabit Ethernetnetwork and protected by up to date antivirus software.

Fibre optic internet connection is provided by two of the most leading companies in this branch and secured by a Linuxfirewall; bandwidth is 100 mbit/sec.

E-Mail service is internally managed and totally protected by the most up-to-date antivirus and antispam systems.

HARDWARE

All activities are carried out by the application of national and international DesignCodes (eg CNR-UNI, BS, Eurocodes, ANSI, ASME, API, AISC) and by the systematicuse of Information Technologies (CAD techniques, use of products design and 3Dmodeling, etc..).

The design activities are strictly controlled in house.

STAGES OF OPERATION: general organization and coordination of design,concept design, economic evaluation, cost/benefit analysis, topographic andgeotechnical surveys, preliminary design, final design, detailed design, BOQ andestimate, technical assistance for contracts, procurement, constructionmanagement, final inspections at site, Project Management and OwnerEngineering.

ENGINEERING

DESIGN DOCUMENTS: structural analysis in static and dynamic fields, FEM models, drawings of steel, r.c. andp.r.c. structural elements, workshop drawings including assembly and erection drawings, base and material lists, constructiondetails, 3-D models.

The activities of the Engineering Area are supported by a research activities, performed in collaboration with several universitiesand Italian and European research institutes.

The high level reached, allows Sidercad to cover a market made up of large, medium and small companies, also offering them asupport service.

Sidercad Software Development originates from the need to automate as muchas possible the procedures used by the company in the engineering area. Sidercad has been aware since the beginning of the need for a functional automated management of its engineeringdesign activities. It has therefore developed tools over the years for the storage of documents and information necessaryfor the management of all phases of the engineering process, from input documents to the management of preliminaryversions and further revisions of drawings.

This experience has subsequently allowed it to enter the large dimension archive management market. The documents areencoded according to the customer/order to which they refer; the classification keys can therefore be customized, inkeeping with recognized standards (e.g. KKS) or by interpreting specific needs, as can the descriptive fields in relation tovarious operational needs.

Technical documents of any format, raster and vector drawings, reports and spreadsheets are stored and their viewingand online printing is coordinated, with particular attention to large raster documents, which are managed by the use ofproprietary technology. The document life cycle is stored through review management with checkout-checkin mechanisms.

Modules for integration with mail are included, in order to save the comments on the documents together with the actionsto be taken. Mail can be connected to a “workflow” that oversees the “actions” to be taken on documents, on the basisof the roles that the contract administrator assigns to his or her employees; all actions are recorded in the database, sothat the various processing stages and levels of approval of each document are constantly monitored.

Know-how and Company structure enable Sidercad to support the customer, by ensuring full operational use of thepurchased technological applications. In particular, the competencies of two work flows have been developed in the field of engineering:

• The P.O.E.M. System (Power Plant Owner Engineering Manager) is an application that allows archiving andmanagement of power plant project document revisions. Manages the flow of work that the “Owner Engineering”group has to carry out in relation to the checking, commenting and approval (or request for revision) of projectdrawings and documents produced by the contractor and by suppliers in general.

• The QAM (Questions & Answer Manager) system, on the other hand, is an application that allows selection of thebidders that participate in a tender. The application manages two work phases. In the first phase the suppliersrequest details and information for the drafting of the technical documents for the tender and receive the necessaryreplies and clarifications. In the second stage the bidders admitted to the tender, are asked questions by the OEspecialists about their technical proposals and the replies are organized and evaluated.
