In what ways does “The Simpsons” conform to the feature, “Style over Substance?” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faRlFsYmkeY This is the feature that style is preferred at the expense of substance. This means that the media today sometimes has the prerogative to make things look great but lack in logic and meaning. The Simpsons conforms to this feature through numerous ways. Take as an example the opening scene/credits to each episode. This is very appealing to the audience yet each of them doesn’t display a reason behind it. It is solely there in order to look pleasing and to entertain the audience. This is done through the opening scene containing each of the characters yet only tells its own narrative not one that relates to the program itself. It doesn’t progress tor relate to the narrative of the program in any way. This is why it is considered post modern in this way. http://tvshack.net/tv/The_Simpsons/season_15/ep isode_13/

This is the feature that style is preferred at the expense of substance. This means that the media today sometimes has the prerogative to make things look great but lack in logic and meaning. The Simpsons conforms to this feature through numerous ways.

Confusion over time and space

• The Simpsons breaks the notion of time and space in ways that other sitcoms such Fresh Prince cannot do.

• In some episodes there are Aliens trying to take over the USA, it would not work in other sitcoms, but it does in The Simpsons

Decline of the meta-narrative

http://tvshack.net/tv/The_Simpsons/season_7/episode_6/ •This clip is an example where The Simpsons shows the decline of the meta-narrative. This is because Homer steps into an alternate dimension, where he becomes a 3-D rendering. He finds that he's trapped in the digital world and all the attempts to save him are useless. Attempts made by Bart but he fails when the digital universe implodes, sending Homer into an even another world- ‘ours’.

•This is another example showing the decline of the meta-narrative such as the presence of the aliens also them speaking English. We don’t really know whether aliens exist and what they look like.

•In some sense it’s a traditional sitcom and they are being playful in the notions of realism.

• This clip is when Lisa and Bart are watching ‘Itchy & Scratchy’ on TV in which they then suddenly appear in the cartoon. Again, this is playing with the notions of realism as they appear in the cartoon.
