Simply Red Editorial
Welcome to the February 2008 issue of Simply Red - yes that’s
right, your favourite source of reading for all things 3rd Enfield
is back after a break of a year! We hope the revival of the
magazine will provide everyone with a bit more of an insight into
the work of the Company, not just locally but also in the wider BB
world. This month’s issue comes off the back of the annual Company
Enrolment service and also at the start of the 125th anniversary
year of the Boys’ Brigade in the United Kingdom (more about that
later). By the time the official anniversary passes on 4th October,
the 3rd Enfield will have been around for just under 118 of those
125 years. Of the Companies still remaining in London, we are the
sixth oldest, which gives an idea of just how many people have
passed through the ranks! On top of the above, we also have some
contributions from members of our Company and Senior Sections, a
couple of articles about the BB on a wider scale, and some other
things which I’ll leave you to find yourselves! We would also
encourage everyone to take a look at the 3rd Enfield’s website,
which has loads of information about the Company at present, and
possibly the biggest collection of Company history in existence,
for which we give massive thanks to Rob Wilson for his work in
finding out so much information. The website can be found at
www.3rdenfieldbb.co.uk Until next month Tom

3rd Enfield Enrolment service Sunday 20th January 2008
The first Church Parade of the new year saw the most important
service of the 3rd Enfield’s year take place, the annual Enrolment
service. The service was once again led by our Minister, Rev David
Atkinson and saw the tradition of Company Enrolment continue, where
all the staff reaffirm their commitment to the work of the Company
and Church, the Boys promise to continue to support the Company as
do the rest of the Congregation. All of the staff were pleased to
see an excellent turnout from the Boys in all of the sections, with
the majority of the Company pre-sent. Each member received their
Boys’ Brigade membership cards for the 2007/2008 session, as well
as various badges that had been earned through badgework,
attendance at other events etc. The Anchor Boys and Junior Section
have had an updated badgework scheme for around three years now and
continue to work on that, and the Company Section had a new scheme
brought in at the start of this session. More is explained about
the Discover scheme on the next page, but all of the Boys received
their updated badges. Jamie Newport became the first ever 3rd
Enfield member to receive the Discovery Badge, which is a new major
award that has also been introduced with the new scheme. He was
also promoted to the rank of Corpo-ral. The service finished with
another Boys’ Brigade tradition, the “unofficial” hymn of the
organisation, Will Your Anchor Hold (with some loud singing from
our Seniors!). All in all it was a very successful service, and the
staff would like to thank the Boys for an excellent turnout, and we
hope this can con-tinue for many Church Parades in the future!

The new Company Section award scheme
Some of you may already have heard about the Discover Programme,
but here is a brief explanation for those that don’t know! Discover
was
brought in at the start of the 2007/2008 session to replace the
old Get the Credit scheme, which had been in use for around 20
years, if not more.
The badges work as follows: Compass Badge This is the first
badge Boys can earn, and is roughly equivalent to the old Target 1
Badge. To be awarded the Compass Badge, the Boy has to complete six
hours worth of activities from the Discover Programme. Discovery
Badge The Discovery Badge is a new major award brought in as part
of the new scheme. To gain it, the Boy has to complete 30 hours of
activities from the Programme, take part in a Battalion event,
attend a residential event (i.e. a camp) and have good attendance
on Parade nights and other activities for at least one session.
Activity Badges (Community, Recreation and Skills)
Once a Boy has gained the Compass Badge they can start working
for the three Activity Badges, which replace the old style Activity
Badges. Each badge has four levels, and there are a large number of
activities that Boys can take part in to count towards a badge.
Community and Skills requires at least 7 hours of work for each
level, while Recreation requires at least 10. Each level of each
badge contains a Christian Faith element, and once a Boy has
reached level four in all of these, they can go for the next two
major awards, the President’s and Queen’s Badges!

Battalion Drill competitions As usual, the Battalion will be
running three Drill competitions this session: the Colour Drill and
Two Smart Recruit competitions will be held on Thursday 6th March
2008, with the Small Squad Drill two weeks later on the 20th. The
venues for both evenings are still
to be confirmed.
Seniors Weekend 2008 The Battalion Seniors Weekend is returning
for its third year in
2008, and will be held at Felden Lodge from 6th to 8th June. If
any Seniors (age 16+ at the time of the event) are interested
in
attending, please let us know!
North London Zone Football Leagues 2007/2008 The Football
Leagues have been running this session, although because there are
less games the season will finish in February. The latest league
tables (as at the end of January) are below:
The only drill competition the 3rd Enfield was able to enter
last year was the Two Smart Recruits and we will be back again in
2008. There has been a three year gap since we last appeared in the
Colour Drill competition, and the last time we
entered the Small Squad Drill, back in 2006, we won it so the
Company is hoping to enter all three of the Drill competitions this
year and hopefully end with
some more success!

Simply Jokes
A man was talking to God and he asks Him, "God, since you made
everything, what is money to you?" God answered, "Well,
£1million
to you would be one penny to me." The man thinks and asks, "God,
since you have been around forever, what is time to you?" God
replies, "Well my son, one second to me would be one million years
to you." The man thinks some more and asks, "God, can I
have a penny?" God replies, "In a second."
———
The lost chapter of Genesis...
Adam was walking around the garden of Eden feeling very lonely,
so God asked him, "What is wrong with you?" Adam said he didn't
have anyone to talk to. God said that He was going to make Adam
a companion and that it would be a woman.
He said, "This person will gather food for you, cook for you,
and when you discover clothing she'll wash it for you. She will
always agree with every decision you make. She will bear your
children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to
take care of them. She will not nag you and will always be the
first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement. She
will never
have a headache and will freely give you love and passion
whenever you need it.”
Adam asked God, "What will a woman like this cost?" God replied,
"An arm and a leg."
Then Adam asked, "What can I get for a rib?" The rest is
history...

3rd Enfield (T R Plowman’s) Company
On 3rd December 1890, the 3rd Enfield held their first ever
Parade Night, the Company being founded by Mr Norris Storer Toms.
Official registration happened on 29th January 1891, and 117
years later the 3rd is still going strong! As you would expect,
a lot can happen over that period of time, which is why efforts are
being made to put together a comprehensive history of the
Company.
Our resident historian and former 3rd Enfield member, Rob
Wilson, is working hard to gather and identify documents and photos
from years gone by, gradually adding to an archive on the
Company
website. As well as this, there are other records such as old
issues of
various news sheets and magazines, lists of former Captains and
Chaplains, the Company Roll of Honour and a lot more. Even as the
3rd looks to the future we hope the history section will bring
back happy memories to former members of the Company, and of
course more recent events will be added as we try to make more
history! Of course, massive thanks go to Rob for his work in
compiling information for the website, and if you think you have
anything to contribute please get in contact with us through
the
website! To go directly to the history section, please go to

Review of the month
Concert at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, 18th December 2007
By Tom Boorman
Now I know this article isn’t BB related and was a few weeks
ago, but I thought it may be of some interest! Some of you
may have heard of Delirious?, who are one of the most popular
Christian bands in the world today. Lead guitarist Stuart Garrard
and lead singer Martin Smith (both in the picture above) have
written some of the best known worship songs around - have a look
in our copies of Songs of Fellowship for some
examples!
The band play many shows every year (they even played at Firm
Foundations in 2006), and every year they put on a special
Christmas show in London. The shows are usually a mix of some
classic songs,
newer songs and a couple of Christmas treats, and are a great
opportunity to join together with fellow Christians in praise to
God, and to have a lot of fun doing so! Despite queuing outside for
rather a long time to get to the front it was well worth it, and
you may have noticed that the photo above shows Stu G in a Batman
outfit! As part of the fun, the evening was declared an optional
fancy dress affair with the theme
“History Makers” (taken from one of their songs), and of course
the band took part - so we had a performance from Batman, a
paramedic, Austin
Powers, the Pope and the gorilla from the Cadbury’s advert!
The band also used the event to showcase some songs from their
forthcoming studio album, and most look like joining their list of
popular worship songs. The reason Delirious? are one of the most
well known Christian bands is because they not only know how to
write amazing songs, but also put on fantastic live shows as well -
a mixture of gentle singalongs and rocking tunes, they are
definitely worth checking out if
you like that sort of thing!
To date, Delirious? have released eight studio albums since 1994
and the ninth, titled Kingdom of Comfort, is due out on 14th April
2008.

Simply UK National news, activities and events...
2008 sees the Boys’ Brigade celebrate its 125th anniversary. The
first Company was the 1st Glasgow, and was started on 4th October
1883 by
William Alexander Smith. A number of events are being planned
nationally to mark this special year, one of which is a service
of
celebration to be held on 4th October at Glasgow Cathedral,
exactly 125 years to the day since our Organisation began.
For more information please visit the 125th anniversary website
at http://www.bb125.org.uk
Firm Foundations is an annual Christian festival run jointly by
the Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade, and is held at Felden Lodge,
Hemel
Hempstead (BB Headquarters). The event is always held at the end
of May (Bank Holiday weekend), this year running from the 23rd to
26th. FF features a number of venues on site with events such as
music, drama, worship, Bible studies and much more! The theme for
FF2008 is “A
Living Hope”, taken from Acts 2:25-27: “Because of this, my
heart will be glad, my words will be joyful, and I will live in
hope.”
For more information please visit the FF website at

Wigs is the word
O=0 Apples are red and wigs are colour in disguise, with a spark
of flint I shall answer your question. Santa was actually a ninja
and his outfit was white until he got confused in the launderette
and it came out red. He used to be a miner and that is why he wears
boots. Anyway, back to the subject of wigs. Wigs are made of hair
if you hadn’t already noticed, they are also for bald people or
women losing their hair or someone who can’t afford to have their
hair styled. Just like the Internet I remember the time when I was
looking up rhinos for my curiosity, like that time when I wondered
how apples could be green and red at the same time. When I was 3 I
thought metronomes were made out of cement until I found out that I
had got ‘metronome’ and ‘house’ confused. I never did understand
what people meant when they say that they have a short fuse. Who
named Christ Church??? Apples, bananas and oranges too, chuck in a
freezer to make a new species. Warning: may set off fire alarm.
Weather vane? Christian Note from the editor: if you think the
above article does not make any sense, the point is that it’s not
meant to!
