Gathering Drum withHello Song

Shosholoza (Exploration)

Tideo (Parent Tip)

Sally Go ‘Round The Sun

Shosholoza: Free play and exploration time on the large drum. Play with two hands, two fingers, scratches, circles, fists, swishes… Encourage the children to find their own ways to play by mentioning the different ideas you see and sounds you hear.

Tideo:• Introduce the hello song by singing, “Time for music, Tideo”

accompanying on guitar or ukulele.• Sing, “Hello ____ tideo” for each child’s name. If it is a small class, use the

child’s name for the entire verse.• After singing all the names, create some verses with ideas from the

children. For example, “Let’s play loudly tideo or Tapping fingers tideo.” If the children indicate a need for movement, this can also include: Time to jump, time to run, time to spin, time to dance etc. For the first week or two you might have to give the children some ideas but they will quickly catch on that their creative ideas are welcomed!

Parent Tip: The foundation is the steady beat. Tap on your child, move with your child. Movement to the beat improves timing and coordination needed for music, dance and sports.

Sally Go ‘Round The Sun:• Show one visual at a time (sun, moon, chimney top) and display it on the

felt board as you slowly sing the A section.• Sing the A section of the song again while making circles on drum. Play

loudly on “Boom!”• Play the steady beat on the B section. Play loudly and say, “Boom!” after

singing “Up.”• Repeat song with CD accompaniment

• “Spiders…” With two fingers, slowly “crawl” up baby’s back.• “Cool breeze” – blow on child’s neck, and pause.• “Tight squeeze” – big hug and pause• “Shivers” - Tickles all over.

Parent Tip: This is a rhyme your child will enjoy for years!

Track

Movement B-I-N-G-O • Walk to the right to the beat while singing the first half of the song.• Face the center and take small steps forward (one for each elongated

letter) on “B-I-N-G”• On “O” parents hold toddlers under their arms and shuffle backwards.

TIP: If space permits, it is fun to have the parents pick up their child and spin them around once everyone is shuffled backwards in the original circle.

Solo Singing Little Clown (Parent Tip)

And He Dances

Little Clown:• Have everyone sit down in a circle• Pat the beat on the legs and sing Little Clown song.• At the end of the song, everyone sings, “Come out” and the clown pops out.• Move quickly from child to child, so all will have a turn without waiting too

long. Stand behind, placing the clown between the children so all can see.• Once they sung, “Come out,” ask the children if they would like to feed

the clown breakfast/ lunch/ snack. Have them sing whatever food they want to give the clown. Suggest they hold out their hand to have the clown nibble the food from their hand.

• Sing bye-bye to the clown.

TIP: If a child is not comfortable singing, say, “Let’s all sing with ____” encouraging everyone to sing with the child so he can see the clown.

Parent Tip: Please be patient with your child. It is fine if they are only observing, not ready to participate in the class. At home, encourage singing. Wait for his/her response. If there is a vocal response, echo back to your child.

And He Dances: Sing after the clown pops up the first time. Use the song to draw everyone’s attention back as needed throughout the Little Clown activity.

Gathering Drum withHello Song

Shosholoza (Exploration)

Tideo (Ukulele)

Sally Go ‘Round The Sun

Shosholoza: Free play and exploration time on the large drum. Play with two hands, thumbs, elbows, palms, knuckles, the back of your hands, etc… This is a child led activity. Give them ideas, and then encourage their own way to play.

Tideo:• Use each child’s name at least once as you sing hello.• Show the parents how to play the C chord on ukulele using a steady

downward strum on the beat. Have parents take turns fingering the chord as their child strums using their “pointer” finger. Explain that we will often use the ukulele in class since its easy to play and a wonderful instrument for them to play with their child at home.

• Encourage the children to sing the “o” of tideo if you don’t hear them singing. Have them raise their hands and sing a high “o” for tideo and then sing a low “o” for tideo.

Sally Go ‘Round The Sun:• Ask if the children remember what happened to Sally. Sing the phrases,

stopping before the last word so the child can sing the words “Sun,” “Moon” and “Noon.” Show one visual at a time (sun, moon, chimney top) and display it on the felt board as you slowly sing the song again.

• Sing the song again while making circles on drum. Play loudly on the “Boom!”• Play the steady beat while singing, “Cows in the meadow.” Play loudly and

say,“Boom!” after singing, “Up.”• Repeat the songs with CD accompaniment.

Parent Tip: We will encourage the children’s ideas on ways to play, making up verses, how to move, etc. This is an important step towards improvisation and composition. We want them to know we value their creative ideas.

Gathering Drum with Hello Song

Jackson’s Morning Brush (Exploration)

Tideo (Ukulele)

Ladybugs (New)

Jackson’s Morning Brush: Free play and exploration time on the large drum.

Tideo: Encourage adults to sing along.

Remind parents how to play the C chord on ukulele. Parents take turns playing as their child’s name is sung and the child uses their pointer finger to strum. Encourage the children to “tremolo” on the drum by playing very quickly. Say, “ACCENT” to indicate playing one loud beat.

Ladybugs:• While telling the story about the three ladybugs, practice the drum part

for each verse. Remove one ladybug after each verse.• Verse One – they feel the raindrops –fingers lightly tap on the drum.• Verse Two – the wind starts to blow – make circles/swishes on the drum• Verse Three – they hear the thunder roar – tremolo on the drum• Verse Four – return the ladybugs to the top of the drum. Encourage

everyone to make the ladybugs “dance” by playing on the drum.• After each verse, count the ladybugs.• Play and sing using the recording.

Movement Sally Go ‘Round The Sun

• Have fun practicing falling on the floor and saying, “Boom!”• A - March in a circle for the first verse then fall to the floor on “Boom!”• B - Tap the beat on the floor and remind parents to tap the beat on their

children if possible.• On “Up,” slide your voice from low to high and raise arms as high as

possible to demonstrate the pitch. If able, adults can lift their child.

TIP: Since they are familiar with the song from the gathering drum the previous weeks, ask the children to sing as they participate in the movement.

Sun, Moon and Chimney Visuals Track

Solo Singing Magic Trick (New)

• Present the rabbit in the hat puppet.• See if they can guess who might be hiding in the hat.• Tap the beat while singing the song and have the rabbit pop out.• The rabbit can hide his eyes and play peek a boo with the kids.• Ask the children to sit in the lap of the adults and reassure them the bunny

will come and visit everyone.• Go around the outside of the circle making sure every child can see and

has a turn to sing for the bunny to pop up.• Encourage the children to sing goodbye before the puppet is put away.

TIP: Some children might be able to sing “Out” instead of “Please” as their magic word. If they don’t sing, ask the whole group to sing with them.

Discuss loud and soft, forte and piano. Tell the class that the instrument, the piano, used to be called the pianoforte, the instrument that can play soft and loud. Explain that we call it Piano for short now. Ask if they would like to do a soft (piano) song or a loud (forte) one. If they say loud, start with Fire truck. If they say soft, start with Twinkle Twinkle.

The Fire Truck:• Practice playing the fire bell and sing the five descending pitches (“Ding,

ding, ding, ding, ding”) before singing the song.• Dramatize the actions. Pretend to turn the steering wheel, find the fire,

turn the corner, climb the ladder and squirt the water.• At the end yawn and lie down on the floor to take a nap.• Repeat with the recording.

Encourage parents to help their children with the movement. Tell them it’s okay if they play the triangle throughout the whole song.Parent Tip: Your participation in class and repetition at home is what brings success. They learn through imitation.

Louisiana Saturday Night: Children can freely play on the large drum.

Alma Mater Blues: Follow the chord changes for I (close), IV (open) and V (flip) for the third week of playing with this Blues piano piece from our Simply Music piano program.

Tideo:• Keep the beat on the drum while singing hello.• Adults take turns fingering the C chord as their child strums using their

“pointer” finger. Everyone sings that child’s name in the song.

Big Bear/Where Are You?:• Using a low voice, alternate hands as you play the slow beat on the drum

and say, “Big bear, big bear what do you see? I see a rabbit hopping by me.” (half notes)

• For the bunny, play on every beat with hands together using a middle range voice and say, “Rabbit, rabbit, what do you see? I see a little mouse running by me.” (quarter notes)

• Use a very high voice for the little mouse as fingers move quickly across the drum and you say, “Little mouse, little mouse, what do you see? I see a hole in the ground, you can’t catch me! “ (eighth notes) End with everyone’s hands behind their back.

And He Dances

Little Clown:• Have everyone sit in a circle• Pat the beat on the legs and sing the Little Clown song.• At the end of the song, everyone sings, “Come out” and the clown pops out.• Move quickly from child to child, so all will have a turn without waiting too long.

Kneel behind the children, placing the clown between them so all can see.• Once they sing, “Come out,” ask if they would like to feed the clown.

Encourage them to sing what they want to feed the clown as they hold out their hand. The clown nibbles the food from their hand.

• Sing bye-bye to the clown.TIP: If they are not comfortable singing, ask everyone to sing with them.

Most children will remember this activity from the first three weeks of the school year. Repetition will result in more participation.

And He Dances: Sing after the clown pops up the first time. Use the song to draw everyone’s attention back as needed throughout the Little Clown activity.

Little Horses (New)

IF TIME Für Elise (Piano)

Two Little Sausages:• Repeated from many weeks ago, sing, “Breakfast” – sing this word slowly

as if a triangle were ringing to call everyone to the table.• Ask the children to sing what they had for breakfast. Echo their singing

using the same pitches.• Ask the children to “Sizzle” their sausages by quickly scraping their sticks.• Practice tapping once for “Pop!” and hit on floor and say “Bam!”• Perform entire rhyme using the above playing techniques.• “Two little sausages…” – scrape the rhythm sticks• “Pop” – tap the sticks together• “Bam” – tap sticks on the floor• Before repeating the activity, encourage the children to sing what they

would like to eat for breakfast. After their singing sing, “And we’re having sausages!”

Little Horses:• For “Little Horses…the sunshine is warm” lay the rhythm sticks on the

carpet. Explain the horses are sleeping in the barn.• For ”Lai, lai, lai…” tap the rhythm sticks explaining this is the sound of the

little horses galloping.• For “Little horses … the blankets are warm” slowly put the rhythm sticks

back down on the carpet since they are back to go to sleep in the barn.• For the last “Lai, lai, lai…” play the triangles and explain that they are

singing and playing a lullaby for the horses to put them to sleep.
