INTRODUCTION:
SIM (Strategic Insight Manager) is a data reporting platform supporting BVC surveys. It is fully
owned by Ipsos and developed and maintained by Brand Activation Studio. This makes it easier
and cheaper to maintain and develop, as we don’t have to rely on external suppliers.
SIM has been designed to seamlessly integrate with the BVC systems, providing faster
processing and turnaround times.
The platform is easy to use and navigate and no training is necessary, but there are sample
datasets available for you to explore and experience what SIM has to offer.
You can have a look at the Introduction to SIM or the Introduction to SIM
Tracking PowerPoint presentations on the Brand Activation Studio Sharepoint
site, or watch a short video.
You can find SIM on:
https://brandactivationstudio.ipsos.com/SIM
Please note that SIM has been designed for Google Chrome and works best in that browser.
While it does also work in Internet Explorer 11, the quality of the exports is not up to our high
standards.
If you are already a registered user of BVC Self-Service, you can use your existing login details
to access the SIM platform. Please contact SIM Support Services ([email protected]) to
activate your account.
If you are not a BVC Self Service user, you will have to register as a new user on SIM. Simply
click on the ‘Need to register’ on the login page and fill in your name, email address and select
a password. Please note that passwords should be a minimum of 6 characters and contain no
spaces. After successful registration, a SIM Support team member will confirm your registration.
Once you have received a confirmation email you will be able to log onto SIM.
If you experience any problems, please contact the SIM Support Services on
DATA REQUIREMENTS:
The SIM platform requires the data in SPSS format (.sav) with specific variable naming
conventions and label requirements (please refer to the “BVC Data Processing – Guideline”
document here). In order for the survey to display on the SIM platform, the SPSS file will need
to be processed through the BVC Self-Service Scoring Platform. Please note that files in .csv
format that are loaded to the BVC Self-Service system, will not be available to view on SIM.

MY SURVEYS:
You will be able to see the list of surveys that you have access to, with the survey details . Please
note that you need to indicate whether you want to see your adhoc or tracking surveys.
You can sort the list by clicking on the up/down arrows next to any column heading.
Use the search box to look for any specific survey in the list displayed, by typing the
information for any of the fields.
Alternatively, use the ‘Show surveys by’-search function on the left to search for a survey
you have access to, but can’t see in the list displayed.
To open a survey, simply select ‘View’.
Please note that there are BVC Sample Datasets that you can use to explore the platform.
Simply type “BVC Sample” in the Project field of the ‘Show surveys by’-search function, and click
on ‘Load Surveys’.
THE ROADMAP:
This shows you all the charts in the various sections, namely the Brand Overview, Attitudinal
Equity, Market Effects and Strategic Matrix (if Market Effects are present in your data. If Market
Effects are not present in the data you will only see an Attitudinal Equity- section).
If you are looking at a tracking study, you will see an additional section on the very right for
‘Tracking’, as well as tracking sections in the side-menu on the left.

Click on each section heading to see the charts therein.
Alternatively, click on the dropdown arrow next to ‘Roadmap’ to navigate to any chart
The charts in each section have been numbered to indicate the logical flow they follow, to help
you navigate the charts and assist you in the analysis process.
MANAGE LABELS:
This gives you the functionality to manage the labels that you see on the charts. For instance,
you can edit a brand name or shorten a market effect statement to make it more concise.
Click on each section heading to see the relevant labels.
Type your new label in the ‘Assign Alias’ block provided.
Remember to click on the ‘Update’ button at the bottom of the screen after making any
changes.

These aliases have a limit of 50 characters and will apply only to this survey. They will be visible
to all users who have access to the survey.
Please note that aliases are temporary in that they are not permanently written to the data file,
but only used for display purposes in SIM. They will, however, be saved in SIM when you log out.
APPLY FILTERS:
You can use filters to narrow down the data. Please note that filters can only be created using
demographic and other variables already available in your dataset. Some variables will appear in
the filter list by default, such as awareness, usage, consideration, the AE groups, ME groups and
Strategic Matrix segmentation (if this is present in the data) for each brand.
Non-default filters get specified when uploading the data through the BVC Self-Service system.
To add filters at a later stage, the entire dataset will have to be reloaded at an additional cost.
Please make sure you specify all filters to be used in the BVC Study Alert form.
Example 1: To create the filter “Gender = Male AND Age = 18 - 24”
This would return respondents who are male AND in the age group 18-24.
Select “Gender” “equals” “Male”
Click on the green ‘AND Expression’-button
Select “Age” “equals” “18-24”
Click on the ‘Get Query’-button to check your filter in the text box.
If the filter is correct, remember to click on ‘Apply filter’(please note ‘Apply filter’ will not work
unless you have clicked on ‘Get Query’).
Alternatively, if this is a filter you would need to use again, you could click on the ‘Save Filter’-
option and gives this filter a name for future use.

Example 2: To create the filter “Gender = Male and (Age = 18 – 24 OR 25 – 29)”
This would return respondents who are male and in the age group 18-29.
Select “Gender” “equals” “Male”
Click on the green ‘AND Expression’-button
Select “Age” “equals” “18 - 24”
Click on the orange ‘OR’-sign at the end of this statement to add an OR-condition
Select “Age” “equals” “25 – 29”
Click on the ‘Get Query’-button to check your filter in the text box.
If the filter is correct, remember to click on ‘Apply filter’ (please note ‘Apply filter’ will not work
unless you have clicked on ‘Get Query’).
Alternatively, if this is a filter you would need to use again, you could click on the ‘Save Filter’-
option and gives this filter a name for future use.
You can reset the filter at any time by clicking on the red ‘Reset’-button. Filters will reset
automatically when you exit the platform.
You can call up a saved filter at any time by selecting the ‘Get Saved Filter’-option.
CONFIGURATION SETTINGS:
This functionality allows you to set certain parameters for your project.
Please note that your changes here are temporary and will revert to the default settings when you
log out (except for Category Market Value).
Remember to click on the ‘Update’ button at the bottom right of the screen after making any
changes.

Minimum Sample Size Threshold
By default, a chart with a base size of <50 will not load. You can change this minimum base size
requirement here.
Please note that this should be done with extreme caution as small base sizes do not give
accurate results and can be misleading.
Attribute Relevance and Performance
This applies to the Attribute Relevance and Imagery charts specifically. You can change the order
that the attributes appear on the chart by changing the selection here.
The default setting for ordering attributes on the imagery charts is on % Association. Note that
the Attribute Relevance chart can’t be used with % Association ordering and will not load. Change
the ordering if you want to look at this chart.
We have added PLS (Partial Least Squares regression) as an option to provide a measure of
importance for attributes. You also have the option to change this to AE Diff (for historical
comparison only). Please note that any changes will only last for the session and revert to the
default (% Association) when you exit the survey.
If you are using IBN driver analysis, do not use PLS or AE Diff. Only use the attribute
performance charts ranked on performance / association, per the default view.
You can also select a specific competitor brand to compare against on the Imagery/Brand
Performance charts, here. The default is the best competitor.
Market Effect Norm Category
You can change the category that applies to your survey by clicking on the drop-down box. This
will be used to determine the benchmark data from our database, to compare your survey data
against. It also determines the category name displayed in the tooltips and analysis text.

Survey Viewing Permissions
Enter the email address of any Ipsos employees to grant them permission to see this survey.
Please note they have to be registered on SIM to have access. Also note that this is for Ipsos
employees only and not for clients. If you have a specific need for your client to access their data
through the platform, please have a look at the ‘Email link’-option below or get in touch with SIM
support ([email protected]).
Category Market Value
For adhoc surveys: You can change the total category market value (eg. 3 500 000) and its unit
of measurement (eg. $) – this will give you a monetary estimate of the BVC metrics.
For tracking surveys: You can split the total category market value into waves.
Please note that this will not reset on exit. To clear it, please click on the ‘Reset’-button.
EXPORTING YOUR CHARTS:
In the Export menu, you will see all the charts you have selected to export to your gallery (see
‘Some notes on the charts’ below for more information on this). The chart name and brand name
are displayed on each chart.
o Clear Gallery:
This will remove all charts from your gallery.
o Share link:
You can easily share a link to the online gallery which will allow non-SIM users to download
the charts for viewing. This link can be shared with your clients directly if you so wish.
SIM User Manual Version December 2019
© Ipsos
Please note that this will be a static link, allowing the recipient to see what was on the export
page at the time. If you include more charts to the export, you will have to resend the link. If
you delete charts after sending the link, however – the user will not be able to see it anymore.
o Create PowerPoint:
To build a PowerPoint deck, select all the charts you want added by clicking on the specific
thumbnails. A successful selection is depicted by a green arrow. Thereafter, click the Create
PowerPoint button at the top right and wait a few seconds for your PowerPoint file to be
downloaded automatically to the Downloads folder on your machine.
The charts in the PowerPoint deck are editable and the analysis text can be found in the chart
notes. The charts are designed to wide slide format to fit Ipsos templates.
EXPORTING TO IMAGES:
Charts can easily be converted to images, by following this process:
• Open the PowerPoint file.
• Go to File, then Save As.
• Change the save format from (*.pptx) to (*.png) in the dropdown.
• When you click SAVE, you will be prompted to save just the one slide or All Slides. Selecting
All Slides will export your entire PowerPoint file into multiple images where each image
represents a slide from the PowerPoint file.

BRAND DASHBOARD CHART
The BVC Adhoc dashboard provides all the brand KPI’s on one page and includes metrics that
support the Ipsos Brand Narrative of how brands grow: more people, more often, more easily.
Please.note that the Brand Dashboard chart has two extra ‘Save’-settings:
• Export All Brands
This creates a *.csv-file containing the comma-delimited data for all brands – this is a value-
added feature for use by data processing analysts. A *.csv-file can also be opened in Excel.
• Significance Testing
This is to perform significance testing between your brand and any competitor brand in the
brand list. You will be prompted to indicated the competitor brand in the ‘User Settings’. Once
you have done this an Excel file containing significance testing between these two brands will
be downloaded.
