Silliman University- World Bank Knowledge for Development Center (SU-WB KDC) turned eleven (11) years old last August, 2014. The celebration, which was held from August 19-22, was highlighted with a lecture on the first day on “Disaster Risk Reduction and Management: the Negros Oriental Experience” by Dr. Henry A. Sojor, Chairman of the Advis-ers and Consultants of the Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council. Dr. Sojor stressed the importance of being aware and being prepared for disasters and calamities, especially that Negors Oriental is prone to catastrophes such as landslides and floods due to the geographical features of the province. He also emphasized our susceptibility to a storm surge and the rising of the sea level. All this and so much more information was given by Dr. Sojor while also emphasizing the counteractive measures being provided by our local government, such as the project called the Ridge to Reef Frame-work Project. It is a project which includes all facets of the environment, starting up in the mountains and going down to the rivers and seas. It is for promoting the use of organic fertilizers, having a solid waste management system, trainings for the members of the local government units, installing local flood warning systems, adopting a river program, creating and establishing tree parks, and establishing protected areas for critical ecosystem. These are just among the many other pro-grams that the Province is implementing for disaster risk reduction.
The lecture was attended not only by students from Silliman University but also from neighboring schools and colle- ges such as St. Joseph Seminary College, Negros Maritime College Foundation Inc. and St. Paul University Dumaguete. Rep-resentatives from the Philippine Red Cross and the Philippine Coast Guard were also present. Silliman University Vice Presi-dent for Academic Affairs, Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan, gave the welcome remarks for the said activity. The lecture which was held at SU-WB KDC was in collaboration with the Social Work Society of Silliman University. It was an eye opener for everyone who attended the lecture of the various ways and means how one can be a part in the reduction of risks in the face of calamities and disasters.
KDC also celebrated its anniversary with the Trivia Quiz which was opened for everyone from August 19-20 and Au-gust 22. Other activities were the Students Inter- Org Quiz Bowl on August 20 followed by the pot-painting contest on the 22nd.
The winners of the Students Inter-Org Quiz Bowl were the following: Chemical Society (1st place), represented by Jacques Sinapuelas, Kent Reynel Gayramara, and Isabel Wen T. Badon; Campus Crusade for Christ (2nd place) represented by Zyrkxis Fritz M. Hisoler, Jethro G. Arbolado and Mike Francis G. Duca; Ang Sandigan (3rd place) represented by Cedrick Louis S. Antiquina, Gloria Roseni M. Yrad, and Dennise Mari Malinao. For the pot painting contest the winners were the following: 1st place, Jhennie R. Limpag, BS-SW II, second place, Joy A. Consolacion, BS-OM IV; and 3rd place, Jenn Corrine C. Reyes, BEED-II.
