Automotive body electronics applications are becoming increasingly complex as the demands on these systems extend to enable higher interaction between systems and the rest of the vehicle while adapting to space and energy consumption constraints.
At the foundation of our body electronics portfolio is a family of AEC-Q100 qualified microcontrollers and wireless solutions. Silicon Labs’ products excel in body electronics applications such as anti-pinch window gate lifters for power windows, networked door controls, power seat controls, remote keyless entry and passive keyless entry, heating ventilation and A/C (HVAC) system for climate and comfort control, windshield wiper and rain systems, steering angle measurement and more.
Human Interface and Body Electronics
• Silicon Labs offers the best performing capacitive touch sense solutions in the automotive market. The C8051F7xx/99x families have ultra low standby power for fast system wake-up and keyless functionality.
• LCD displays are commonly used in electronic digital displays because of the extremely low electrical power and low voltage requirements. Silicon Labs’ CP240x can drive those LCD displays up to 128 segments for viewing in bright as well as dark conditions. USB interfaces are also available as bridge ICs for several serial bus standards (UART, I2C, etc..)
• The Si114x infrared proximity and ambient light sensor family, using one to three infrared LEDs, powers functions such as back-lighting control and touchless motion/gesture recognition when driving.

Anti-Pinch Window Gate LifterDesigners can significantly reduce system cost by using C8051F5xx automotive microcontrollers. Power SeatsSilicon Labs C8051F5xx automotive microcontrollers are ideal for power seat control where three or more motors are employed to optimize driver seat safety and comfort. The C8051F5xx MCUs, with a built-in 0.5% oscillator over the entire temperature range, allow direct connection to HS CAN and LIN buses without the need for external crystals. Seat control is mostly motor control with mechanical switches. Higher-end seat systems include driver/motor position memory and recall (see page 24) as well as seat surface heaters and cooling systems. Motors in this application are typically brushed. For BLDC and sensor-less BLDC motors see page 25.
Si82xx isolators are added to motor control modules to isolate and eliminate unwanted electrical noise from the motors. Having a low noise floor is critical to the occupant infotainment experience and performance of RF modules.

Passive Keyless EntryPassive keyless systems perform two simple functions: opening a door or trunk hatch with a touch on the handle and allowing the driver to start and stop the car with the push of a button. To realize these functions, a technologically advanced system is required that includes a new generation HF/LF fob and an in-cabin base station with its associated set of LF antennas plus touch sensors. The Si401x is an excellent choice for a single IC fob, integrating the MCU, AES-128 encryption, and RF transmitter. Silicon Labs’ EZRadioPRO® transceiver, complimented by the ultra low power C8051F98x/9x MCU offers a very high communication link budget (>130 dB) as well as very low power while in standby mode to preserve battery life.

Networked Door and MirrorVehicle doors continue to evolve in the areas of safety and functionality. Silicon Labs’ C8051F5xx automotive MCUs are compelling solutions for controlling all door and integrated mirror functions. The C8051F5xx MCUs offer a crystal-less CAN bus and LIN bus communication gate between the body control module (BCM) and the door functions. For the motor control for window lift and mirror position (see page 7) the C8051F5xx provides high processing power, providing interlock and pinch signature algorithms to simplify automotive window obstruction detection and eliminate the need for a separate interlock system. For vehicles with passive entry systems, the door handles need a touch sensor with excellent outdoor performance and are suitable for use with gloves. Ventilating and A/C System - Climate & Comfort ControlAn automotive heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is an excellent application for the C8051F5xx automotive microcontroller family. The ADC variable attenuation feature is very useful when interfacing to a variety of sensors. Communications are through the integrated LIN 2.1 controller that operates off the internal 0.5% precision oscillator. Add to this the built-in 1.8 V to 5.25 V LDO regulator, and you have a high performance system solution at a very low cost.

Steering Angle MeasurementSilicon Labs C8051F5xx highly integrated automotive microcontrollers can provide steering angle position from an anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR) sensor input via a high-speed CAN bus. In this application, calibration measurements are provided and then the full range of the ADC is maximized with the variable attenuation feature for each sensor. An integrated 0.5% oscillator and 1.8 V to 5.25 V regulator are included as well.

Tire Pressure MonitorTire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), required in the US and increasingly elsewhere, demand a high-performance, frequency hopping receiver such as Silicon Labs’ Si4xxx EZRadioPRO® that can be shared with RKE/PKE access systems. The wheel component of TPMS monitors the pressure and temperature every few seconds and transmits the data over RF frequency. The monitoring is typically done in short bursts every few seconds to save battery life. The tire module batteries are rated at 85 °C max and are expected to last 7-10 years in the application. Most of the time, batteries are sealed into the TPMS module and cannot be replaced. Coupled with an RF transmitter and pressure sensor, Silicon Labs’ C8051F99x with RTC wake-up is the lowest power solution available. An alternate option is the Si401x, which integrates the MCU and TX functions in a single chip.

Brushless dc motors have the advantage of electronic commutation and do not require brush maintenance typical of mechanically commutated motors. The MCU generates gate drive signals and the on-chip analog-to-digital converter is used to measure feedback from voltage, current and position sensors.

AC Induction MotorThe ac induction motor is very popular in industrial and consumer applications because of its reliability and low cost. AC induction motors require three PWM signals with sine wave modulation. These signals are generated by the microcontroller.
