The Texas State Historical Association: Past and Future

The Texas State Historical Association began on February 13, 1897, when ten individuals met on the University of Texas campus to discuss founding an organization to promote the discovery, collection, preservation, and pub-lication of historical material pertaining to Texas. The assemblage included academic and nonacademic histori-ans, a blend of membership that has been preserved to the present.

The Association’s first director (or secretary, as he was called at the time) was history professor George P. Garrison of the University of Texas, and he brought together the most respected names in Texas to help him with his en-deavor. Many of the organization’s founding members were veterans of the Texas Revolution, Mexican War, and Civil War. Many held political offices. Some were well known writers and historians. Year after year, the Associa-tion’s membership grew as it recruited not only the writers, but also the makers of Texas history.

For more than a century, the Texas State Historical Association has played a leadership role in Texas history research and education, helping to identify, collect, preserve, and tell the stories of Texas. Located on the campus of the University of North Texas since 2008, these two organizations, with their partners and members, strive to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The collaboration will provide passion, talent, and long-term support for the dissemination of scholarly research, educational programs for the K-12 community, and opportunities for public discourse about the complex issues and personalities of our heritage.

The TSHA’s core programs include the Texas Almanac, the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, the Handbook of Texas Online, the TSHA Press, and an Education Program that reaches out to students and teachers at all levels throughout the state. The central challenge before the TSHA is to seize the unprecedented opportunities of the digital age in order to reshape how history will be accessed, understood, preserved, disseminated, and taught in the twenty-first century. In the coming years, we will capitalize on these momentous opportunities to expand the scope and depth of our work in ways never before possible.

In the midst of this rapid change, the Texas State Historical Association will continue to provide a future for our heritage and to ensure that the lessons of our history continue to serve as a resource for the people of Texas. Your participation in this auction will provide much needed support for our ongoing efforts.

Terms and Conditions

All proceeds from donated lots and commissions from consigned lots go solely to the Texas State Historical Association.

The property listed in this catalogue will be offered for sale by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) on the following terms and conditions:

1. Each participant must register for the Silent Auc-tion to be issued a bidder number. Auction regis-tration forms will be available at the meeting and inside Annual Meeting registration packets.

2. Bidder registration forms can be turned in at the Silent Auction table located in the Regency Ball-room.

3. This is a charity auction fundraiser for TSHA; no state sales tax will be collected for this auction.

4. Payment to be made by check or credit card on the day of the sale (except as mentioned below). Please make checks payable to TSHA.

5. Items and condition have been described as completely as possible. However this is a benefit fundraiser; if you have condition concerns, please contact TSHA to examine your lots before bid-ding. All property is sold “AS IS” and without any right of return.

6. The TSHA reserves the right to withdraw any lot before or at the sale.

Proxy Bidding

8. Proxy bidding is available; please contact David Degnan at TSHA (940) 369-5221 or by email at [email protected] to enter proxy bids. It is strongly recommended that you make arrangements at least one week before the sale date.

Shipping Services

9. Shipping services for goods won at auction can be provided by TSHA via UPS upon buyer’s request. Shipping & handling charges will be charged to buyer. Insurance for items shipped will also be available.

Silent Auction

10. Bidding in this year’s Silent Auction will begin Thursday, March 1, 10:00 a.m. and close Friday March 2, approximately 5:30. Silent Auction will close in sections; one row at a time, approximately 50 lots every 5 minutes beginning at 5:30.

11. Listing of Silent Auction items in catalog for refer-ence only. Unless otherwise noted in catalog, actual opening bid will be reflected on bid sheets.

12. Silent Auction participants must register and receive a bidder number. Bids without a registered bidder number will not be valid.

13. Each Silent Auction bid sheet will contain a mini-mum bid requirement. Bidding increments must be $5 or multiples of $5, i.e., $5, $10, $15, etc. Failure to comply with the minimum increase will result in the elimination of your bid.

Ron Tyler’s new introduction to this facsimile edition provides the context for Kendall’s narrative of the war, illustrated with Carl Nebel’s beautiful hand-colored lithographs of the most important battles of the war, beginning with the Battle of Palo Alto, which took place on Texas soil. The limited edition, in a cloth tray case with leather spine, is signed by Ron Tyler and bound in specially selected cloth with a leather spine label and includes an extra set of the twelve color plates suitable for framing. 294. Archival pigment print from a TINTYPE original taken by Robb Kendrick in2005. SIGNED. Print title: Tim Stout, Quien Sabe Ranch, Texas. Robb Kendrick’s photos for National Geographic have won him international recognition. But in the past decade, his work as a tintype artist has earned him even wider acclaim. Kendrick has resurrected the tintype format, a photo technique from the mid-19th century, to bring a haunting timelessness to his portrait subjects, which include cowboys from the West, Tarahumara Indians in Northern Mexico and mummies in Guanajuato, Mexico. The tintype photos he creates with the wet-plate process are each one of a kind as they are all handmade from start to finish. Kendrick has published four books of tintypes. Kendrick’s first book of tintypes was Revealing Character, which was also a touring exhibition that is being featured at eight major museums in the U.S. The wet-plate portraits of working cowboys that are collected in Still: Cowboys at the Start of the 21st Century, were made in 14 Western states, Mexico and Canada. Made. Changelings, a collection of Mexican mummies photographed on tintypes, with forward by Thomas Lynch, was published byCloverleaf Press, and 4-O Publishing will release The History of the Waggoner Ranch, which includes many of his portraits from the historic ranch, later this year. Kendrick’s tintypes are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Ralph Lauren photo collection. The Witliff Collection at Texas State University has 110 pieces and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas recently purchased 12 images. RETAIL VALUE, $1,750.
