Sikhs across the World continue to experience difficulties at various airports including being asked to remove their turbans. As a result, many Sikhs are refusing to fly and missing their flights.
In fact Bhai Manjit Singh GK, our VIP guest from India was refused security clearance by Italian Airport
Security Staff who insisted GK and his associates remove their turbans for security clearance. This request was denied by GK, a move that has received appreciation from Panthic bodies worldwide.
The issue led to a delay of over 24 hours when finally the DSGMC team were allowed to boarded their flight to Dubai, before finally continuing his journey to New Delhi, India.
Dastaar Awareness Day was designed to celebrate and educate about the dastaar in addition to highlighting concerns of the Sikh community and strategies to overcome them.
Dastaar Awareness Day included events for children, speeches from prominent community representatives, Italian leaders and VIP guests in addition to Punjabi religious and cultural displays, demonstrations and a variety of Punjabi and Italian cuisine.
Sikh Channel was delighted to provide coverage for the whole event from Friday 12th July to Sunday 14th July, most of which was shown LIVE on the Sikh Channel.
“We had fantastic response from all our supporters who congratulated the whole team who covered this event so well. We would like to thank everyone that attended this event” says Gurdeep Singh.

“We have already had a great response from the Sangat in Canada and we look forward to arranging more coverage and programmes with them”.
Sharmil is a valued member of the Sikh Channel team. He joined the team in 2010 and has worked hard on improving the entire look and feel of the channel, bringing in innovative graphics and design ideas. Sharmil’s enthusiasm for animation started from his childhood, with cartoon movies such as the Disney classic Aladdin and a more recent favourite, Toy Story. Since then his skill set has expanded tremendously which is reflected in his senior position within the Sikh Channel team. Sharmil’s projects include working on the Breakfast Show graphics and themes, but the highlight so far has been his work towards Sikh Channel’s very own first quiz show Kaun Banega Gursikh Pyara.
Sharmil was pivotal in re-branding the Sikh Channel in April 2013, providing a fresh, sleek new look overall.
“I have learned a lot about the principles of the Sikh faith which have influenced my life. Coming to the Sikh Channel has given me more than a career, it’s given me a way of life. All the staff regard each other as family and as a family we ensure that the work we do provides the sangat with informative, entertaining and engaging content that benefits everyone, and upholds the values of the Sikh faith.”
