We are interested in better and free play!
We know that children want to have fun. Different cons-titutional, social and psychological conditions are impor-tant in order to guarantee an optimal contribution to the health- and wellbeing as well as personal development of a child. Over the last few decades we have been collecting know-how from theory and best practice. This helped us to better understand the movement, the play instinct, the value of play and the physical and mental development of children. We use this knowledge to develop and continu-ally improve our play space concepts.
We are individual and creative!
Designing individual items of play equipment requires imagination, a high degree of flexibility and the creativity of our employees. We want to retain the originality, de-sign and colour of our products, while at the same time drawing on traditional shapes, processes and knowledge.
We stand for safety and quality!
High quality design, finest craftsmanship, and the durabi-lity, stability and safety of our products is most important. Robinia wood is the perfect material for our approach. We demonstrate our competence, commitment and high performance not just through appropriat certification but with every commission to design, build and maintain an exciting new play space.
We do business according to fair competition principles!
Our world offers something for everyone. We think this is a good thing and we are open-minded towards our competitors. It is important to us to operate honestly, competently and in a customer-oriented manner at all times. This is evident in our long-standing relationships with our customers and the fact that they know they can rely on us.
We are committed to the rights of children and young people.
In order to react and shape pro-active the new eco-social environment, we are future-oriented as well as operate in an environmentally friendly and sustainable fashion. We therefore carry an Environmental Seal, comply with FSC rules on responsible forestry and promote the interests of young people. Together with our partners we dedicate our efforts to democracy, support multi-cultural values and demonstrate global responsibility.

continuing education and training:
To ensure that we can deliver high quality products in future, continuous education and training has to be a top priority at SIK-Holz®. We want to give young people a sense of pride and pleasure in the work they do, whether as a craftsman or as an administrator, and prepare them for an interesting working life. Every year our company trains 20 people to become carpenters, wood sculptors and office administrators.▶ Further information available at www.sik-holz.de/en/sustainability

maintenance:
Regular checks and any resulting maintenance work, including all documentation, is the responsibility of the operator of a municipal playground. An inspection check-list is provided on delivery or collection of every item of equipment that we supply. This outlines exact details of the type of checks required (visual or operational), and the recommended time interval between those checks (weekly, monthly, annually). The care and maintenance of play equipment is not required by law. However, in terms of return on investment, regular maintenance of a play space can extend its useful life considerably and have a positive impact both on the facility and the local environment. Our «Playground Doctor» seminar aims to provide you with theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the proper care and maintenance of playgrounds.▶ Go to www.sik-holz.de/en/sustainability/maintenance-and-care for full details about our seminar programme
environment:
In 2010 SIK-Holz® received a positive evaluation for its operational environment and was awarded the «Branden-burg Craftsman Environmental Seal». This seal recognises a well-functioning environment management system, in which all operational processes are subjected to a rigorous environmental impact assessment.
We also use renewable energy, i.e. non nuclear, environ-mentally-friendly electricity from power stations in Schönau. The electricity generated by EWS produces 90% fewer harmful CO2 emissions per kilowatt hourthan the average.
Our playground equipment is made exclusively from local robinia wood. It is the hardest European nutwood and can be used without chemical protection as it has been categorised as resistance class 1 – 2 according to DIN EN 350-2. This means it can be used outside wit-hout the need to be treated, and is an excellent alternative to slow-growing tropical hardwoods. Our robinia wood is felled in autumn or winter and comes from sustainably managed natural mixed forests in Brandenburg. Through the utilalisation of wood residues we can achieve 100 per cent use of the material.
robinia (robinia pseudoacacia l.)
abbreviation according to din 4076, part 1: rob
trade names: robinia, false acacia, black locust
Wood properties:
The robinia has a distinctive heartwood colouring which contrasts sharply with the narrow, yellowish-white sap-wood. Robinia wood is extremely heavy and hard and has a much higher mechanical strength than that of oak. It is tough, flexible and easy to bend. Robinia also has above- average tolerance across the grain under dynamic stress. The heartwood has high natural resistance to wood-de-stroying fungi and insects. In terms of robustness robinia is superior to all other types of wood and even poor quality specimens can last on average at least 20 years in the ground.
robinia
application:
Traditional use, for example as fence posts, mine timber or fuel, becomes gradually less important. In recent years the wood has been used to manufacture high-quality products. It is particular useful for constructive appli-cations outside which are biologically and mechanically demanding.
growth habit: The robinias grown in Europe, when felled at the opti-mum age of around 40 – 50 years, can reach a height of 20 – 25 m and a diameter of 30 – 40 cm. The trunks tend to be crooked, forked or uneven in shape. Planned selection and careful nurturing can have a positive effect on shape and size. The knot-free shaft length at this age can reach 8 – 10 m. The marketed round wood is around 2.5 – 4 m in length and has a diameter of 25 – 40 cm.

material & quality
Equipment safety and quality are an inseparable unit. For us good de-sign without safety is unthinkable. This is why even at the planning stage we comply with the standards of the European norm EN 1176 – 2008. The quality management system is fully integrated into our organisa-tional structure and he compliance with safety standards is regularly checked by our employees. Fully integrated into our organisational structure is the quality management system EN ISO 9001:2008. It creates the basis for good working condi-tions and guarantees the adherence of our high quality requirements.
We preserve the natural shape and structure of the wood used in making our sculptures, play equipment and park furniture; in fact, it is an essential part of each piece’s character and finished appearance. Our playground equipment is finely handcrafted and solidly built. All wooden parts are chamfered and sharp corners and edges rounded off. All joints (e.g. bra-cing, beam extensions and crossings) are fixed securely.
Nets and ropes are made from 4-ply Hercules cordage with a steel core. All construction fixings, such as screws, bolts, brackets etc. are galvanised; protruding metal parts, such as screw heads, are rounded off; nuts etc. are fully recessed and secured with plastic caps.
Our slides are made from high-quality 2.5 mm stainless steel. Horizontal bars and monkey bars are made of stain-less steel tube with a diameter of 33.7 mm
Colours can have either a positive or a negative effect on our optical sensory perception. Certain colour combi-nations direct the eye and draw attention to a particular situation or a location. The careful use of colours can add something to the look and composition of a playground. That means the planner is able to use colour in order to add a particular emphasis to the playground which can stimulate children’s play. We apply a solvent-free wood glaze for all large play equipment’s and some of our larger play sculptures. Springers and smaller sculptures are coated with water-solu-ble acrylic paint according to their natural colour and then being waxed. Our paints are resistant to saliva and sweat. The particular combination of raw materials makes them especially suitable for children’s play equipment. All products come in standard colour shown in the catalogue unless there is a choice of colours available. On customer request items can also be supplied unpain-ted or painted in a colour combination of choice. It is important to indicate your preference on the written order. We recommend that items are re-painted every 2 – 5 years, depending on location and the level of staining. ▶ Detailed information available under Sustainability (page 7)

All our play equipment is pre-assembled in our workshops and, if necessary, dismantled for transportation with items clearly marked for re-assembly. We supply full assembly instructions. For large and/or complex assemblies, we also have our own in-house installation team. Quotes for assembly are calculated on the basis of average ground conditions with a maximum depth of 1.0 m and soil class 3, as per DIN 18300. Access to the site for lorries up to 15 tons and adequate space for wheel loaders and cranes must be guaranteed. We carry out the measurement and installation of the equipment utilising available and statically sound anchoring support onsite. These must be guaranteed by the customer.

Children feel their own body weight when using a seesaw. The sensation of their weight constantly shifting can feel almost like hovering. Eye contact between the children and the unique sensation of moving up and down make this an activity that kids will want to repeat over and over again. Aside of our classic seesaws we also offer a range of other playground springer’s. These are all beautifully hand-sculpted in our own workshop. As well as being fun to ride on, our springer’s are also designed to reflect the diversity and beauty of nature.

Climbing, balancing, gymnastics, mastering monkey bars, even just sitting quietly and watching, are all essential elements of psychomotor development through play. Balancing on a narrow surface, learning to propel yourself along horizontal bars or looking down from the dizzying height of a climbing frame – all these things take strength and courage. Children need to be allowed to see how far they can push themselves. The further they are from the ground, the greater the mental and physical challenge and – most important – the more fun they have. Ground-level play equipment provides the perfect opportunity for imaginative movement games for groups of children. These are a fun way to improve fine motor skills and learn how to cooperate with other children.

A playground should also have quiet areas, somewhere where children can have their own space. These quiet areas promote communication and stimulate role-play activities, such as playing families. It is extremely important that toddlers and pre-school children develop the social skills that they will need throughout their lives. Role play gives children the opportunity to reflect and process the adult world around them. In fact, it is not the external appearance of a play house that is important. It is what is inside that counts: tables, chairs, counters and shelves – small touches that can stimulate the imagination and support the child in his /her role play.
you can assemble the playhouse «Flexi» of different basic elements and align it with the requirements of different age groups. Either with or without solid ground, two
or three walls, shop counter, shelf, table, bench or resting net, there are endless possibilities to design fast and flexible an individual playhouse. With the colour scheme
you place further emphasis. on the left page you can see possible examples.

No playground is complete without a swing. The sensation of swinging high up in the air gives a feeling of weightlessness and freedom. And, of course, that delightful feeling of butterflies in the stomach that is so familiar to children and adults. Sharing a swing with another person is even more fun. Rotating play structures let children experience centrifugal force. They also promote mutual cooperation between the child on the structure and the person pushing.

Nature offers a wealth of opportunities for play of all kinds. But with towns becoming increasingly built-up, there is less and less open space for play activities. The spaces allocated for playgrounds are often considerably smaller than most car parks. Where space is at a premium it is important to design play equipment which provides scope for a variety of uses. Our playgrounds make it possible to combine communication, role play and movement activities. They act as a hub for many different types of play, where children can move around from one play station to another depending on how they want their particular game to develop. Our playgrounds are designed to be close to nature. They can be extended easily as demand changes and grows.

All play mobiles and play sculptures are hand-crafted in our wood-carving workshop. They can be free-standing, mounted on fence posts or installed in sandpits. Children can enjoy climbing on them or incorporating them into their role play. It is also quite common for children to treat the play sculptures as imaginary friends. They can also enrich children’s understanding of nature and can add value in teaching important values. The individual character of play mobiles and play sculptures gives every playground its own special identity. Stimulating sensory perception is a key part of elementary education. Children constantly undergo sensory experiences which are then stored in the memory and add to the learning process.

Sand and water are among the four elements. Having the opportunity to play with both of these in a play space should be a fundamental part of any child’s education. Playing with sand and other loose materials promotes the ability to create and make different shapes. The addition of water adds a further dimension to this type of play. Playing with sand and water is a pleasure enjoyed by young children right up until they start school and even beyond. A spacious sandpit should therefore be an essential feature in any playground. Small tables, platforms with mini sand lifts, and sand and water chutes all make this sort of play even more fun. It is important when planning sand and water play areas that they are installed in a sheltered location away from busy thoroughfares. It is also advisable to position them under the shade of trees or under a sun awning.

Spaces for play, free movement and exercise are key features for any local community and impact on quality of life. Therefore, the aim when planning these common spaces is to create attractive places where people will enjoy spending time. For example, we produce unusually-shaped chairs, made especially with young people in mind, as well as classic-style seating for adults. Both are comfortable and easy to get out of. Last but not least, it is essential that a playground is both clean and tidy – very important to the overall look of the facility. That means also having a good supply of bike racks and litter bins.

Playgrounds are important meeting places in any local community and should improve the quality of life of all those who use them. Unfortunately, they are often the only place left in a densely-populated town or city where children can run around and play freely. In those areas it is important to design playgrounds which are as close to nature as possible and are flexible enough to provide scope for different types of play. Ideally they should feature high-quality, imaginative play items which allow a child to be both creative and to challenge him/herself. They should allow the child to switch between communication, role play activities and games involving free movement with a strong focus on play and experiences. Capable of being extended and with a range of elements designed to stimulate different senses, our playgrounds offer an enhanced play experience for all children. Ultimately it is really the child, with his /her own individual way of looking at the world, who decides what is the most valuable in a playground with all it the individual items. Having fun and to encounter boundaries over many years helps us to grow in experiences with respect to our own standards.

JungLe tRAiLdK-Åalborg | Åalborg zoo | 2012
In June 2012, the lions and tigers at Åalborg Zoo were given a big new enclosure. So that now all the visitors get a great view of the big cats in their territory, in collaboration with the zoo management SIK-Holz® has designed and built impressive jungle huts on stilts. The new installation includes three covered observation platforms that are connected with each other high up and easily accessible by means of stairs. The complex also includes a large walk-through house from where visitors can see the animals.

One of the largest recreational and leisure attractions in Hamburg's Hafencity is the Grasbrookpark- a popular meeting point for all generations. Already in 2008 created SIK-Holz® a large play ship with maritime equipment. In 2013 we extended the play opportunities with a large palm tree climbing forest. Large meander shaped water basins are located in the middle. They simulate a miniature delta of the river Elbe with its many river islands.

The Phoenixsee is an artificial lake on a former industrial steal factory located in Phoenix-East in Dortmund. Around the lake grew an interesting area for residential estate and recreation. So naturally, the playgrounds evolve thematically around the mythical creature. They have been planned by the office BSL in Duisburg and constructed by SIK-Holz®. No matter where you look either in the nest of the phoenix, the phoenix colony or during the flight of the phoenix, the firebird is never to be seen -only its tracks.

The Hoch Hinaus («Reach for the Sky») playground is situated at the heart of Dortmund’s Westphalia Park, close to a small café. This extremely challenging play area is a superb facility for the local population and an important meeting place in the community. From the huge slide combo to exciting climbing and balancing courses, this is the ideal space in which to challenge yourself, but it also has quiet areas. There is no shortage of seating, making it a nice place to sit and rest or chat. Its attractive natural design means it blends well into the environment and makes an ideal place for children to explore their imaginations while the adults relax.

The Torf Haus Visitor Centre is in the middle of the Harz National Park. In 2013 the designer Kerstin Müller created a new visitor guiding system featuring unique wooden sculptures created in collaboration with SIK-Holz®. Its most eye-catching feature are a series of huge wooden figures representing the magical flora and fauna of the Harz Mountains. Huge ferns carved out of wood accompany visitors as they make their way through the park, with literary quotations about nature to entertain and amuse them as they go.

Dinosaurs – extinct for many millions of years have the power once again to capture our imagination. A fascination with the diversity and sheer size of these creatures led to the opening in 2013 and 2014 of playgrounds in both Berlin and Magdeburg. The projects were initiated by children themselves. The result was two quite different municipal playgrounds, both with a high aesthetic value. With designated areas for younger and older children, and for quiet as well as boisterous play, plus a guiding system for the visually-impaired (Berlin playground only), there is plenty to keep children occupied during their visit.
