Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes, oh my!

• Learning outcomes• Participants will align an existing goal, objective, or outcome with

their desired cognitive level.• Participants will write a new goal and objective or outcome at a

specific cognitive.• Participants will evaluate existing goals, objectives, or outcomes

in order to identify candidates for revision.

WHAT DO WE WANT STUDENTS TO KNOW?

Page 8: Significant Learning Goals. Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes, oh my! Learning outcomes Participants will align an existing goal, objective, or outcome.

Three to five years later, my students still know...

are able to do...find value in...

(aka- What would be embarrassing for students not to know after they took your

course?)

Dream BIG!

Learning Goals - Levels

Create enlightened citizens

Evaluate scientific resources

Distinguish science from psuedo-science

Find evidence of peer-reviewed science in newspaper articles

Goals – Objectives - Outcomes

Goals are statements about general purposes of education that are broad and long-range

Objectives are brief, clear statements that describes the desired learning outcomes of instruction

Outcomes are statements that describe significant and essential learning that learners have achieved.

Activity• Look at your University, College, and Department to see if

there are explicit goals, objectives, or outcomes.

Types of Learning Objectives

Cognitive – “What do you want your students to know?”

Affective – “What do you want your students to think or care about?”

Behavioral– “What do you want your students to be able to do?”.

Writing Learning Objectives/OutcomesPick a level, type, and taxonomy

Select an action word that identifies the performance to be demonstrated

Determine a statement that reflects what learning will be demonstrated

Include criteria for acceptable performance

ExampleGood – Students will be able to write a research paper

Better – Students will be able to write a research paper in the appropriate style

Best – Students will be able to write a research paper in the appropriate style that reflects the data presented

How about this one?Students should know the fundamental concepts of cell biology

Is this a good learning objective?

Why or why not?
