Social Media Monitoring Designed for public safety and emergency management The New Zealand and Japanese earthquakes, the 2011 London riots and the 2012 movie theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado illustrated that social media is the ‘go to media’ for many people. This use of social media poses an opportunity and a challenge for authorities. Posting of pictures and videos and sharing of information provides situational awareness. As a result social media can provide vital real time reporting to emergency managers and emergency operations centres (EOC). However, the ever increasing volume of information can be staggering and therefore difficult to manage: • Every minute over 500,000 tweets are sent • 250 million photos are updated daily • One out of every eight people in the world are on Facebook. Signal enables the public safety and emergency management community to better understand and incorporate social media information through filtered lists and visual mapping. Examples of its use include monitoring: • Keywords of interest • People of interest • Locations of interest • Incident impact • Response impact • Community welfare • Misinformation • Health situations such as pandemics • Major overseas events or situations where nationals may be in danger.
