Social Media Monitoring Designed for public safety and emergency management The New Zealand and Japanese earthquakes, the 2011 London riots and the 2012 movie theatre shooting in Aurora, Colorado illustrated that social media is the ‘go to media’ for many people. This use of social media poses an opportunity and a challenge for authorities. Posting of pictures and videos and sharing of information provides situational awareness. As a result social media can provide vital real time reporting to emergency managers and emergency operations centres (EOC). However, the ever increasing volume of information can be staggering and therefore difficult to manage: Every minute over 500,000 tweets are sent 250 million photos are updated daily One out of every eight people in the world are on Facebook. Signal enables the public safety and emergency management community to better understand and incorporate social media information through filtered lists and visual mapping. Examples of its use include monitoring: Keywords of interest People of interest Locations of interest Incident impact Response impact Community welfare Misinformation Health situations such as pandemics Major overseas events or situations where nationals may be in danger. Social Media MonitoringDesigned for public safety and emergency management

The New Zealand and Japanese earthquakes, the 2011

London riots and the 2012 movie theatre shooting in

Aurora, Colorado illustrated that social media is the

‘go to media’ for many people.

This use of social media poses an opportunity and a challenge for authorities. Posting of pictures and videos and sharing of information provides situational awareness. New Zealand Police sought the capability to monitor social media communications that could pose a threat

to public safety at one of the biggest sporting events in the world. They worked together with Intergen, three-

time New Zealand Microsoft Partner of the Year, to develop and deploy a social media monitoring tool for the

tournament’s six week duration. New Zealand Police continue to assist with Signal’s development to ensure

it meets on-going requirements.

Signal provides a proven solution specifically designed for the public safety and

emergency management sector that is robust and affordable. Signal has been

effectively used at two of the world’s biggest sporting events in 2011 and 2012.

Signal operates an extensible model that allows for integration of additional social media networks. It is a secure social media monitoring tool that filters by keywords and locations with GPS tracking for real time intelligence.

Signal is offered as Software as a Service-based subscription integrated into Microsoft Azure or can be deployed on user’s premises for absolute security and control. To enhance the common operating picture Signal can be integrated with other EMIS solutions such as NC4’s Esponder.
