Foreword The study of sight reading is valuable because it enables musicians to enjoy music that is new to them, either on their own or in a group. As with any other skill, confidence in sight reading comes with training and regular practice.

This progressive method provides a carefully paced approach to sight reading, suitable for anyone wishing to improve their sight reading on the Saxophone. For those studying for a Trinity grade exam, the elements required are all introduced by the time the student reaches the end of the relevant grade section. At each grade there are ten lessons, each with a clear area of focus. Stage-appropriate sight reading tips, both general and specific to the instrument, are given along the way.

Each lesson presents several preparatory exercises leading to a duet, included to encourage the development of ensemble sight reading skills. While duets are not required for grade exams, they are vital in building confidence and rhythmic fluency. Each duet builds on the same musical ideas as the preceding exercises, consolidating the learning and assisting the student through familiarity.

Official Trinity specimen sight reading tests conclude each grade section. By the time the student has completed the ten lessons they should be well prepared to cope with the demands of these tests.

About the AuthorJames Rae is one of Europe’s most published composers of educational wind music, having at present over 250 publications to his credit. His music includes instrumental jazz study books, tutors, five musicals, transcriptions and many volumes of duets along with sonatinas and chamber works for all woodwinds and saxophones. Many of his publications are to be found on all the major wind examination syllabuses worldwide. Recent commissions have included the overture for concert band ‘Platform One’ for the opening of the Colyer-Fergusson Music Building at The University of Kent.

As a freelance clarinettist and saxophonist, James Rae has worked professionally in nearly every possible musical situation from West End musicals to engagements with some of the country’s major orchestras.

As well as writing and performing, James Rae has tutored and conducted on many courses over the last 25 years including the highly popular Northern Saxophone Course, Ace Foundation Courses (Cambridge), Jazz Zone and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
