third year with the Ohio State Marching Band. Mark Losinski became a first year member of the march-ing band. As a freshman major-ing in actuarial science, Mark found the experience difficult yet rewarding and looks f o r w a r d to future years in the band. These brothers enjoyed

marching in the Shoe, as well as the Bowl game in Florida, and even the game in that dreadful “State up North.” All three of them look forward to the rest of their carrer in the bandCongratulations guys!!!

Long before the start of the school year, a select group of dedicated Buck-eyes head to campus to try-out to recieve one of Ohio State’s most prestigious honors: a spot in the Ohio State Marching Band. While this year’s football season did not turn out as Buckeye Nation had hoped, three of the brothers of Ohio Gamma had the honor of being a part of the march-

ing band. Broth-ers George

F a r r i s , M a r k Losinski,

and Joshua Senn marched

as members of The Best

D a m n Band in

The Land. After a long sum-mer of vo lunteer s e s s i o n s and a gru-eling week of tryouts, all three of these b r o t h e r s earned their spot in the flugel-horn-playing C-Row. George Farris was elected to the position of Assistant Squad Leader by his row. As a fourth year, George balances his elec-trical engineering major, work, a security intelligence minor and of course, his fourth year with TBDBITL. Spring break 2012! For many students this means a time a carefree living. Howev-er, for a number of brothers at Ohio Gamma, it means a time for serving the less fortunate around the country and around the world. This year Bashem Rashwan, Justin Neise, Tyler Hampton, Jeremy LeDonne, Eric Zernich, and Mike Stauber decided to take unconventional Spring Break trips to help make the world a slightly better place to live in.

All of these brothers agree that Buck-i-Serv trips are ben-eficial for communities and personal growth. Brother Justin Niese served in Greensboro, North Carolina with Basem Rashwan and Tyler Hampton.

Brother Niese describes his experience as being more rewarding than he could have imagined, “Not only did I get to make an impact by working on a house and serving the com-

munity, but I also made new friends and created lifelong memories.”

Brother Jeremy LeDonne was another brother that elected to go on a trip. He went down to Atlanta, Georgia to help at a cat shelter.

Brother Mike Stau-ber traveled abroad to Be-lize. “If you ever get the

chance to mix service with cul-ture, do it!” says Stauber.

Brother Luke Cheng trav-eled to Mullins, South Carolina in order to help build low-cost housing. Brother Cheng agrees that this experience is some-thing he will take with him for the rest of his life. He elaborates in saying, “It was an extremely impactful Spring Break. It truly

gave me a new perspective of life outside our privileged lives here at Ohio State.”

The brothers at Ohio Gam-ma pride themselves on being contributors to the larger com-munities around them through service and philanthropy. Re-cently, the brothers decided to pick the Hematology/Oncol-ogy Department of Nationwide Children’s Hospital as the focus of all their philanthropic ef-forts. Its goal is to end child-hood cancer.

This department of Na-tional Children’s Hospital is the same department which Buck-eyethon supports. Buckeyethon is Ohio State’s all night dance marathon that was founded over a decade ago by a group headed by our advisor, Dr. Don Stenta. It is the hope that this tag-team approach will pave the way for other Greek Organiza-tions to follow Ohio Gamma’s footsteps.

Every quarter the chapter organizes a retreat for all broth-ers to attend. This past winter, Dan Miller arranged a fantas-tic trip to Snow Trails Ski Re-sort in Mansfield, Ohio. It was fun watching brothers show off their snow skills (perhaps it was even more enjoyable watching some brothers tumble down the hills).

For this year’s annual Spring Retreat, Andrew Flis planned an afternoon of adven-ture at the Summit Vision high ropes course. There were two courses, both which featured many rigorous challenges. Most of the challenges were very strenuous and required great balance and strength.

At heights of 33 feet and 55 feet, brothers would have to walk on a suspended log with nothing to hold onto, while others attempted to keep their

groins from tearing on what the course director called “The thigh master,” which was a se-ries of hanging wooden plat-forms that gave your thighs a good workout when attempting to conquer it.

It is the goal of every chap-ter retreat to push and challenge brothers past their normal com-fort zone, while also promoting brotherhood. Brotherly love is one of SigEp’s main values, and we strive to uphold this value in all that we do. Brothers kept each other safe by supervising while other brothers unlatched their harness from one support wire and hook it onto another.

Brothers would not only have to communicate to move their harness links, but also try to figure out the best way to go about each obstacle. The air was filled with methodical safety calls, and the exciting

shrieks of encouragement and advice.

Brother Andrew Flis de-serves a lot of credit for choos-ing such a tremendous after-noon excursion. It was a fun way to get out and keep a sound body, as well as to create some great memories between broth-ers. We all look forward to fu-ture retreats and maybe even another visit to the Summit Vi-sion ropes course.
