Getting Started 11.1 Introduction

This documentation guides you step-by-step to fast initial start-up of the RF660R reader. This includes the following steps: 1. Connecting the HW components of reader, PC and antenna 2. Installing the configuration software for the reader 3. Parameterizing the Reader

Preconfigured profile files are provided: 4. Testing the function of the reader (recognizing a tag)

1.2 Safety information

1.3 Hardware and software requirements To start up the RF600, you will need the following components:

Hardware • PC with Windows XP Professional • RF660R reader • Wide-range power supply unit for SIMATIC RF • 24 V connecting cable, 5 m in length • At least two RF660A antennas • Tags (standards: ISO 18000-6B, EPC Gen. 1 or EPC Gen. 2) • RS232 connecting cable from the PC to the reader or TCP-IP cable (crosslink PnP) • Two antenna connecting cables

Software • RF660R configuration software

1.5 Status displays

Status displays LEDs Color Meaning

Power on Green Power supply ON (also lit for undervoltage/overvoltage)

Tag Detect Yellow LED lit, as soon as at least one tag is within the field

System Error Red Reader is not active.

Rebooting is necessary (operating voltage Off → On.)

Note If "Tag Detect" is not lit even though a tag is located within the field, common reasons include: • Tag protocol has been set incorrectly (can be set with Configuration Software) • Tag is defective • Reader or antenna has a defect

Sequence for connecting the HW components Step 1 Connect the RF660R to the PC via a 9-core serial cable (RS 232 connection). Step 2 Connect 2 antennas to connections ANT 1 and ANT 2.

Use the antenna cables that can be ordered for RF660R to achieve the optimum transmission conditions. Position the RF600A antennas alongside each other at a spacing of 50 cm and pointing in the same direction.

Step 3 Connect the 24 V DC power supply to the RF660R.

1.7 Installing Software

Installing Java runtime environment and SIMATIC RF660 configuration software 1. Insert the product CD "SIMATIC Sensors - Software & Documentation" in the drive of

your parameterization computer. 2. Start by double-clicking 'srf660rinstall.exe' 3. Follow the instructions on your screen until the software has been installed. If you select

the "Desktop" option under "Choose shortcut folder" during installation, the RF660R configuration software icon should now be on your deskop.

Note Java environment The Java environment from version 1.4.2. required by the RF660R configuration software is contained in 'srf660rinstall.exe'.

1.8 Parameterizing the RF660R Step 1 Connect the RF660R to the power supply. The green POWER LED of the reader is lit. Step 2 Start the RF660R configuration software. Step 3 Select the correct country and set:

Configure a reader online, using the reader settings. Click Next

Step 4 Select Connect using Serial Port and the relevant COM interface.

Step 5 Click Connect. The RF660R configuration software then exchanges message frames with the reader that are shown on your display. The reader can now be parameterized.

Step 6 Acknowledge the successful status message with OK in order to get to the Edith Ethernet and Notify Channel Settings. Select Notify Channel None . Click "Send to Reader and Next". The Notify Channel is the channel on which the tag events are sent. Problems may occur if the firewall is activated.

Step 7 In the menu Edit Antenna Settings set: Antenna Switching: On, 100ms Number of connected antennas (e.g. antenna 1 and antenna 2): If antennas are not connected: Operating mode: Disabled; Operating mode: TX/RX; • for Europe (ETSI): Power 2000 mW; Antenna Gain (dBi): 7.0; Cable Loss (dB): 4.0; • for the USA, (FCC): Power 1000 mW; Antenna Gain (dBi): 6.0; Cable Loss (dB): 4.0

Confirm with Send to Reader. Click Next to access the Edit Radio Settings menu.

Step 8 Radio Setting menu. '

Select Frequency Hopping ON or OFF (for Europe: ETSI) For the USA (FCC) Frequency Hopping is set as default.

Step 9 Select Send to Reader, click Next to get to the Edit Tag Protocol Settings menu.

Step 12 Set in the Edit Trigger Settings menu: Trigger Mode: Continuous.

Click Send to Reader and Next to get to the Edit Reader Mode Settings menu. Confirm Trigger Mode Continuous, confirm with Send to Reader,click Next to get to the Edit Reader Mode Settings menu .

Set in the Edit Reader Mode Settings Operational Mode menu: Autonomous . Click Send to Reader and Next to get to the window Reader Summary. Click Done. The reader is ready.

1.9 Testing the RF600R Place a tag on a neutral base (for example, use a base of wood or plastic, but definitely not of metallic or field-influencing materials) in the field lobe of the antenna and switch the reader to "Autonomous Mode". The TAG DETECT LED of the RF660R starts to light up yellow. In order to have the tag ID, ID type, protocol and time stamp of the read tags displayed, click Monitor Tag Events.

Alternatively you can also use the following configuration: Mount both antennas on top of each other on a stand, with the first antenna 1 m above the ground, and the 2nd antenna 2 m above the ground (bottom edge of antenna in each case). Hold the tag in the middle between the antennas.
