EDITORIAL

Welcome to the fifteenth edition of Sideways, the SSA Area 9 Newsletter. I hope you and equine friends have coped with this very wet winter weather and are looking forward to spring time, which seems to be just around the corner going by the daffodils popping up at the end of our drive!

I’m happy to report Princess Penni seems to be sound again after her field rest last year and was feeling quite fresh and lively on our last hack out! We are due to have that pre-season chat on whether she would like to take part in some side saddle competitions this year! This is the gentle approach I have to take with such a ‘Princess’. We were planning to retire her from the show ring but I’m sure she would love to do a couple veteran and costume classes.

This edition lists the Area events for 2016, details on the vacancy for a treasurer with the Association and some side saddle items for sale. If you would like to contribute to further issues of the newsletter, please get in touch, it would be lovely to hear from you. Do you have interesting side saddle facts and photos to share, please do forward them to add to be added to the next edition? Please feel free to contact me on [email protected] or if would rather chat on the phone, you can find my contact details on the last page of the newsletter. Looking forward to catching up with you all soon. Carol Rogerson, Area 9 Secretary

A WORD FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

Dear members, Hello everyone and welcome to a new side saddle year for Area 9. There are already a number of dates for you to note in your diaries for this year, our usual annual seasonal shows and a Grade Test and Instructors Exam Day amongst them, details are in this newsletter and on the Area Website. We kick off this year on the 27th March with a dismounted meeting at Burnpark, West Calder. There will be soup and rolls to start the afternoon followed by a talk/questions with Marjorie Grant on the topic of Ring Craft, something that members are always enquiring about so a good turnout is expected. After the talk tea and cake will be available and you can have a rummage in our bring and buy side saddle and horse related items which usually go down well with a number of items changing hands.

This year we will be trying out a new venue for our Spring and Summer shows after many years of using The Grange at West Calder. The Grange has returned to being a full time riding school and thanks to Elis and Grant Knight for allowing us to use their indoor school in the past. The new venue is only about 8 miles further north at Torphichen by Bathgate and has a lovely indoor school with a good surface and also gives us the luxury of a separate viewing area and catering facilities for us to provide our own food or to have it supplied by the venue. The cost of hire of the facilities s £25 per hour. Full address details can be found in the events list in this newsletter. I look forward to being your chairman over the next season and hope that we can pick up from where we left off in October and to get you all set up for the coming season. Our good friend Roger Philpot will be visiting on the weekend of 9th and 10th April to set up saddles for those needing their saddles looked at and to give a little instruction to get you all started. Again an early visit from Roger has been requested on a number of occasions so please make this worth-while and take advantage of the chance. There are a few other ideas in the pipeline for this year so please keep your eye on the website and the newsletters for details once things are finalised. I wish you all a happy successful side saddle year and look forward to meeting you all again soon. Fiona Young Chairman Area 9

SSA 9 Member News

Thought my kindred spirit side saddle enthusiasts might appreciate this photograph taken on a photoshoot last autumn at Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfriesshire, by kind permission from the Duke of Buccleuch. This is Pebbly Penni Farthing (affectionately known as Princess!) ridden by her maid Carol Rogerson! Wearing a Busvine black vintage habit which has the original label inside sewn into the lining and was tailored in 1927 for Lady Fenshaw - a lucky find indeed!

Photographed by David Ho of Horse Photography Scotland – see more details of their services on the website - http://horsephotographyscotland.com/

Remember to send your photos for the newsletters, I’m sure other members would love to see them.
