FACADES : SIDERISE (PREVIOUSLY CALLED LAMATHERM) PERIMETER BARRIERS & FIRESTOPS FOR CURTAIN WALLING
SIDERISE perimeter barriers and firestops for curtain walling use a patented method of manufacture that provides a resilient lateral compression. This facilitates ease of installation, ensures the requisite tight fit and enhances fire integrity.
Throughout the range, the materials comprise a one-piece product with a pre-compressed non-combustible stonewool core. The products also have integral aluminium foil facings to provide an overall Class ‘A1’ rating and excellent resistance to smoke.
SIDERISE CW-FS perimeter barrier and firestop systems also offer independent third party approved performance for both horizontal and vertical applications, ‘Certifire’ Certificate No CF563 refers.
The systems offer fire resistance rating options ranging from 30 mins to 5 hours and can accommodate void widths up to 1200mm. For voids in excess of 400mm contact TIDL.
In addition to providing an effective seal against the passage of fire and smoke the products will also function as an effective acoustic barrier and plenum lining.

System selection
The correct system is simply selected by matching the fire resistance requirements to the CW-FS type and void size.
Tables 2 & 3 summarise the nominal fire rating for horizontal and vertical applications together with confirmation of void size limitation and standard dimensions.
FACADES : SIDERISE (PREVIOUSLY CALLED LAMATHERM) PERIMETER BARRIERS & FIRESTOPS FOR CURTAIN WALLING
The maximum movement that a fire resistive joint system can
accommodate is critically important for perimeter firestop
barriers. The system used needs to have a degree of ‘dynamic’
movement capability in order to accommodate serviceability
movement.
Main modes of movement effecting perimeter barrier
performance are vertical deflection due to dead and live loads
and negative and positive (in/out) movement, typically due to
wind pressure. These are covered by EN 13116.
For curtain walling applications it is imperative that the installed perimter barrier system is able to function effectively with regard to all design movement serviceability limits.
Design considerations
Typically, a project may stipulate that the curtain walling system may have the following allowable deflection limits: -
“Under the declared wind loads the maximum frontal deflection of the curtain walling’s framing members shall not exceed L/200 or 15mm, whichever is the less, when measured between the points of support or anchorage to the building’s structure in compliance with EN 13116” - extract from EN 13830.
Important factors for consideration: -
• Review the position of fire stop and distance from fixing bracket connection
• Ensure the structural engineer specifies the facade deflection
• Consider both inward and outward deflection requirements for the system
• Review the curtain wall expansion and any floor slab/building movement
• Review transom/mullion deflection
Upon confirmation of the above factors, it may be necessary to include an ‘additional’ compression allowance when installing the firestop.
Installation of the correct material size is important to ensure that integrity is maintained.
Note - Performance is always a function of both Specification
and Installation. TIDL are pleased to assist with advice on a
project basis.
SIDERISE CW-FS - a unique method of manufacture
SIDERISE has developed a patented method of manufacture which affords the range of CW-FS perimeter barriers and firestops a unique flexiblity and robustness to meet all the performance criteria required of modern curtain walling. Importantly, the systems can accommodate typical facade deflection due to their unique construction, which accepts the cyclical negative and positive wind and live loads imposed on the facade.
Performance
SIDERISE CW-FS systems are made to a consistent specification
with quantified movement properties.
Standard lateral movement is +/- 10% for cavities up to 300mm.
Based on the design considerations, where the anticipated
serviceability movement exceeds +/-10%, the project specific
Method Statement needs to reflect a specific compression
requirement to allow the permissible movement of up to +/-
20mm, i.e. 40mm amplitude.
Movement capability of the system in the event of a fire
SIDERISE CW-FS products have been tested to BS EN 1364-4.
This test isolates the junction between the compartment floor
and the spandrel zone, and specifically models and measures
the movements of curtain wall and the floor during a fully
developed / flashed-over fire. It is a three-dimensional test with
real, live, dynamic movement induced by extreme heat, with
a closed closed furnace pressurised to 20 PA. The test provides
information on how the seal performs in a real-world assembly
when subject to a real-world fire scenario, at high pressure,
where the forces impacting on the barrier are significant,
unpredictable and changing – dynamic in the true sense.
As an example, SIDERISE CW-FS120, when tested to EN1364-4,
and subjected to 20 PA and EN1363 time temperature curve,
the joint system accommodated 20% shear on 120mm thick
product. No integrity failure.
The movement property of the SIDERISE CW-FS systems whilst
maintaining Integrity is considerable and is considered to be a
key benefit.
