Shrovetide or Maslenitsa is an old traditional festival. Maslenitsa is one of the oldest and most joyful Slavic holidays. There's no other holiday that has so much of the “Russian spirit”.
Maslenitsa is celebrated during the last week before the Lent, that is seven weeks before the Easter. It’s when Russians say goodbye to winter and welcome spring.
What are people’s favourite activities on Shrovetide?
Eat blini (pancakes) with caviar.
You can eat these tasty pancakes with red or black caviar.
You can enjoy eating them with jam and berries.
On this holiday people play garmoshkas and balalaikas, sing songs and dance. People ride troikas and have snowball fights. People make a doll as a symbol of the winter and burn a scarecrow.
