Introduction

Summer Fun Guide 2012 page 4

The summer holidays can be a mixed blessing for both children and

families. Balancing work and home commitments, keeping the children

active and avoiding the boredom can be difficult.

To help ease the stresses of the summer and to ensure you and your family

have fun together, Shropshire Council’s Family Information Service (FIS)

has produced this guide.

It covers events and fun activities organised for children, young people and

families across the county. You can find all the information you need in one

place, making the summer holidays fun for all the family.

Whatever you do this summer be sure to plan ahead. Decide if you will

need a few activity days or full time care at a holiday play scheme, out of

school club, or childminder.

Whatever you are looking for, Shropshire FIS, has been established to help

you as a parent or carer make the best use of childcare and children and

young people’s services available in your area.

Shropshire FIS also offers comprehensive information on all year round

care including, childminders, out of school clubs, day nurseries and pre-

school playgroups. Information is also available on children’s clubs and for

the young ones, carer and toddler groups.

If you are using a registered childcare provider you might even be eligible

for help with childcare costs through the Working Tax Credit. Depending

upon your circumstances you could claim back a percentage of your

childcare costs, or you could ask your employer if they are signed up to an

Employee Childcare Vouchers Scheme, which again contributes towards

the costs of your childcare.

For information on what is available in your area or to find out what else

Shropshire FIS can offer you please call 01743 254400.

DisclaimerWhilst we strive to ensure all the information in this guide is correct, you

should always ring in advance to check the event is still going ahead and

is suitable for your child.

5. Make a den

6. Go camping in the back garden

7. Plant some sunflowers

8. Visit a museum

9. Go for a bike ride

10. Make some popcorn and watch a film

13. Create an obstacle course

14. Make some sock puppets

Keeping Safe This SummerMany of the activities and play opportunities listed in this booklet are not required to

be regulated by Ofsted, as all childcare settings and schools are, however there are

many ways in which you can check that the organisation offering the activity will keep

your child safe.

• Check if they have public liability insurance for the children in their care.

• Does the organisation have policies on health and safety, child protection, code

of conduct, equal opportunities etc?

• Do members of staff have a current Enhanced Criminal Record Bureau check?

• What staffing ratios they have for the number of children in their care.

• If specific physical activities are being offered such as climbing or canoeing are

these supervised by suitably qualified trainers?

• How many members of staff have a qualification relating to this age group such

as play work or youth work?

• What are the arrangements when children and young people go on outings?

• Is there a member of staff qualified in first aid? Where is the first aid box?

A good organisation will understand why you are asking these questions.

Shropshire County Library Service

Summer Reading Challenge 2012 – Storylab

Every summer children in Shropshire can take part in the national Summer Reading

Challenge at their local library. This year the theme is Storylab a celebration of story

and imagination.

Children aged 4-12 are challenged to read 6 books over the summer holidays and in

return they receive rewards and stickers and those who complete the challenge receive

a certificate and a medal. Younger children are not left out as they have the chance to

take part in the Book Crawl – a year round scheme available to all 0-4 year olds.

The scheme is completely free and really easy to join and there will be events and

activities in libraries around the county all through the summer.

For further information visit the library webpages at

www.shropshire.gov.uk/library.nsf or

Short Breaks – ‘All in’

‘Short Breaks provide opportunities for disabled

children and young people to spend time away from

their primary carers. These include day, evening,

overnight or weekend activities and take place in the

child’s own home, the home of an approved carer, a

residential or community setting.

The ‘All In’ Short Breaks programme will be focusing on after school, weekend and

school holiday opportunities for disabled 0-19 year olds. Generally an assessment

will not be required to access services, but one may be required if your child’s

needs are more complex and it is necessary to consult with other professionals

involved in their care.

The ‘All In’ activities listed in the Summer Fun Guide can be accessed by Shropshire

children and young people with a disability or additional need that have or would

experience difficulty attending groups, clubs or facilities without support. To confirm

your child is eligible you will be required to complete a registration form which

details the nature of your child’s disability or additional needs as well as describing

the barriers they have or would face in accessing mainstream services.

Once the ‘All In’ Registration Form has been completed and returned each child

or young person will be sent their very own ‘All In’ membership card and number.

You can then book onto an activity using the membership number.

You can get a Registration Form by contacting Harry Cade at the Disabled

Children’s Team on 01743 282370, or downloading a copy via the Shropshire

Council website www.shropshire.gov.uk/childrenstrust.nsf under the Short

Breaks link or the Parent and Carer Council (PACC) website

www.paccshropshire.org.uk.

Shropshire County Museum ServiceShropshire has over 20 museums and there are more to the museums than just

exhibitions. They are homes for artefacts, specimens and memories donated by

the local community for future generations to enjoy and learn from. They interpret

the past, the environment, plus they celebrate and preserve the things that make

Shropshire special.

For further information telephone the Museum Service on 0345 678 9024.
