An estimated 1,000 Shriners andtheir families meet in Butte this week-end for the annual ceremonial meetingof the Pacific Northwest Shrine Association, or PNSA, said organizer Jay Morris.
The public is invited to watch Shrinercompetitions and demonstrations, and alarge parade.
This is only the second time thePNSA has held its ceremonial meeting inButte. The first, in 1995, attracted about3,500 members.
Morris said the 1995 celebration wasso successful that the 2011 gathering isbound to attract members.
Sean Johnson, the chief rabban of theBagdad Temple in Butte, encourages thecommunity to watch the Shriners paradeat 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. It will con-sist of 18 different temples from thePacific Northwest and Canada.
The parade starts from East MiddleSchool, heads west on Grand Avenue,
turns north on Texas and ends at theCivic Center.
“It’ll rival the Fourth of July parade insize,” Morris said.
Johnson said that the ShrinersImperial Potentate Michael Severe willattend the Butte meeting. Johnson
added that this is a big honor becausehe is one of the highest ranking peoplein the organization.
“He oversees every temple in theworld,” Johnson said.
Morris said the PNSA also holds anannual “seminar meeting” in variouscities, but these events are planningevents involving heads of each temple.
He said the ceremonial meetings aremore “family-oriented” celebrations.
Portions of the profits from the Buttemeeting will be donated to the ShrinersHospital for Children in the region. These pediatric facilities specialize intreating serious burns, spinal chord andcleft lips and palates.
