and gave plenty of feedback just in time for the
career fair. Members learned what companies
most often look for in a resume and the most
common errors to avoid.
The first informational meeting with SHPE
had a record-breaking number of more
than 160 attendees. Way to go Aggies!
Before the first round of exams started,
members met at Spence Park for some BBQ
and fun. With water balloons, three-legged
racing, and other games, everyone had a great
time and took a break from studying.

Pumpkin Carving
Many SHPE members are interested in
continuing their education by going to graduate
school but don’t know where to start. To
answer their questions, a small group of
Hispanic professors got together to give advice
on the matter and provide guidance for these
members.
SHPE and ALPFA hosted a joint meeting with
Capital One. The company’s representative explained
what companies usually look for when hiring employees
and even gave a walkthrough of a case interview
example.
Halloween is fast approaching, and what better
way to prepare for the holiday than by carving
a pumpkin? Here SHPE members displayed
their creativity by carving out faces and other
Halloween creatures on pumpkins.

Intramurals With all these exams coming up, SHPE members can feel a bit overwhelmed between classes. One of the biggest mistakes that students do is to try to study all the material the night before the exam. The most recommended method is to review class material at least several times a week. In fact, it is best to review the material right after class while it is still fresh in your memory. Remember, everyone is different, so don’t be afraid to try other methods.
Studying Abroad
and Internships MentorSHPE KickOff
SHPE is proud to offer its mentoring
program, MentorSHPE, to all its
members. The program consists of
partnering students in the same major
with older students that have already
taken the courses and have more
experience. The program even goes as
far as to include professors and
professionals as mentors. In this first
event, the mentors met with their
assigned mentees for the first time.
They got to discuss their schedule, their
personal lives, and other details that
helped bond their mentoring
relationship.
Summer is the best time to start
preparing yourself for your future
occupation or for getting ahead in
your classes. One way to do that is
by studying abroad! Even engineers
can travel out of the country and take
challenging courses in Brazil, Spain,
India, and China. You can also apply
for internships by registering for
INROADS, a company that will
provide you the skills needed to get
land an internship. SHPEsters, please
take advantage of these
opportunities! For more information
about Engineering Study Abroad,
please visit Zachary 121, and for
more information about INROADS,
check out their website.

Stress Management Social
With finals and deadlines for classes quickly
approaching, SHPE members can feel
stressed out. This social showed how to rec-
ognize different types of stress and how to
avoid negative stress. By simply eating
healthier and getting a good amount of
sleep can lower your stress level. Also,
managing time for both school work and
relaxation can decrease stress as well.
This year, the National SHPE Conference was held at Fort Worth,
Texas. During the conference SHPE members attended workshops to
develop professional skills and created networks not only with engi-
neering companies but with SHPE members from other universities
as well. Also, our organization is the largest SHPE in the region!

Lonestar Showdown
Finals are coming! Are you ready to ace these exams? Luckily, you still got time! One way to ap-proach these exams is by practic-ing exam problems. Professors usually ask similar questions from their previous exams or even from their previous finals. Don’t forget that SHPE has a test bank, so make sure you take advantage of this resources. Remember this is only one method, so try whatever feels best for you.
SHPE hosted a general meeting with Lockheed Martin and were honored
to have SHPE National Treasurer Michael Gutierrez as the company’s
representative. He thoroughly explained what jobs are currently availa-
ble in the market, what potential candidates they are looking for, tips
about life changing decisions, and overall, inspiring life stories. Everyone
surely enjoyed the evening as he even took the time to stay after the
meeting was over to answer personal questions from the SHPE mem-
bers.

Good Luck on Finals!!!
The classic battle between Texas A&M and University of Texas! SHPE
members from both universities get together to play a friendly game
of football. Even though our SHPE lost by a few points, they took the
victory home in the volleyball game. Everyone certainly enjoyed
themselves and the company of our fellow SHPE chapter rivals. Af-
terwards, members were able to network with other members and
enjoy a nice cook-out.

Ice Skating Social
SHPE’s first social event was at Spirit
Ice Arena, the local ice skating rink.
There, our members enjoyed a pleas-
ant evening ice skating with their
friends. Some were bold enough to
try ice skating for the first time and
successfully learned how to stay bal-
anced on the ice. Afterwards, we all
went to eat at Sully’s. Overall, every-
one enjoyed great company , great ice
skating, and great food.
Welcome back to another semester at Texas A&M. Hope everyone
enjoyed their winter break and their first few weeks of classes. SHPE
has plenty of events coming up this semester, so whether you enjoy
playing soccer or helping out the community, there is something for
everyone.

Honeywell Informational Meeting

Although the semester just start-ed, now would be a good time to set up good studying habits. Most students tend to study better by working in groups, so start look-ing for potential “study-buddies” in your classes. Also, remember that most of the upperclassmen have taken the same CBK classes as well, so do not be scared to ask upperclassmen for help.
Before the Spring Engineering Career Fair, SHPEsters received extra ad-
vice on their resume. SHPE members learned the proper format on re-
sumes and gained valuable tips on making the most of the career fair.
SHPEsters also practiced their elevator speech, a thirty second introduc-
tion about yourself to a company recruiter, and gained networking tips.
Whether recruiters provide a business card or not, it is best to always ask
for some type of contact information. This way, you can keep in touch
with recruiters and stay up to date with internship or career opportuni-
ties.
SHPE Study Tip
Be sure to scan your exams from last semester and email them to [email protected] for extra points. Remember it’s 1 point for every exam and 3 points for every A.
The first general meeting of the semester was with Honeywell. The
representative described the qualities of potential candidates. SHPE
members learned that companies look for candidates that have vi-
sion, experience, knowledge, and professionalism. The places one
can go in engineering is limitless, so make sure you take advantage of
all these opportunities offered during college.

Class of 2016 Resume Workshop
The first MentorSHPE meeting’s theme was motivation. As college stu-
dents, it is hard to find the motivation needed to complete assignments
or to study. The workshop provided ways to keep that motivation and
reminded us that every college student is going through the same strug-
gles. Therefore, SHPE members learned that they are not alone and can
also trust other SHPE members to provide advice for any problems,
whether it be about school, work, family, or life.

Flour Informational Meeting
February started with a general meeting with
Flour. Representatives Carlos and Janet
discussed the different positions available at
Flour and offered tips on transitioning from
college life to professional life. Although the
professional workplace has less structure and
less “freedom” than college life, with the right
attitude and effective relationships, anyone
can learn to adapt. These tips are all gathered
from the book “How to Succeed in your First
Job”, which they strongly recommend.
A week before Valentine’s Day, SHPE hosted their annual Dinner Date Auction, where
SHPE members and other students auctioned themselves off for a date at local restaurants
near College Station and Bryan. The event raised about more than $600! Needless to say,
the event was a great success.

Budgeting & Summer Planning
As college students, it is hard for us to get used
to spending our money wisely. Luckily,
MentorSHPE hosted the Budgeting & Summer
Planning workshop where SHPEsters learned
about different ways to save money and how to
prevent themselves from wasting it. The
workshop also provided options for having a
productive summer, such as attending summer
school, finding a job, or conducting research.

Spring break is just around the corner, but so are exams! To do your best on any test, make sure you carefully read the question. Do not make any assumptions about what the question might be. Also, if you feel that you do not know the answer to a question, skip the question and continue with your exam. Other parts of the exam might help you figure out the answer. Overall, keep track of the time and do your best!
SHPE also provide ways to give back to the community. In this event, SHPE members helped examine donated goods and sort them into appropriate boxes. Thanks to the amount of help we had, we were able to sort more than three tons of food in about two hours. Way to go SHPEsters!

In this meeting, SHPE members met Jose Manuel Lopez, current
President of SHPE Houston Chapter and a representative from
Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift American Inc. He answered questions
about his position at Mitsubishi and also provided advice on working
professionally. He also explained his role as President and suggested
to stay involved in SHPE even after college.
