Ford roars into the 2013 Work Truck Show with word that it’s expanding its line of vehicles delivered factory- ready for alternative fuels with gaseous-prep engines. Among them are all-new Transit chassis cab and cutaway models, “engineered to tackle an almost unlimited variety of specialized jobs and vocations.” The Transit trucks come with 3.7-liter V-6 engines, available with a compressed natural gas/propane gaseous- prep kit allowing Qualified Vehicle Modifiers to install CNG or propane autogas fuel systems while maintaining Ford dealer availability and warranties. Sales of Ford trucks with CNG/LPG-prepped engines have soared more than 350% since 2009, Ford said. Businesses are using CNG-fueled trucks to lower their operating costs, “with the payback period for recouping conversion upfit cost as fast as 24 to 36 months of in-use service.” “The transit chassis cab and cutaway models join the industry’s broadest lineup of commercial chassis,” Ford says. Ford roars into the 2013 Work Truck Show with word that it’s expanding its line of vehicles delivered factory-ready for alternative fuels with gaseous-prep engines. Among them are all-new Transit chassis cab and cutaway models, “engineered to tackle an almost unlimited variety of specialized jobs and vocations.”

The Transit trucks come with 3.7-liter V-6 engines, available with a compressed natural gas/propane gaseous-prep kit allowing Qualified Vehicle Modifiers to install CNG or propane autogas fuel systems while maintaining Ford dealer availability and warranties.

Sales of Ford trucks with CNG/LPG-prepped engines have soared more than 350% since 2009, Ford said. Businesses are using CNG-fueled trucks to lower their operating costs, “with the payback period for

recouping conversion upfit cost as fast as 24 to 36 months of in-use service.”

“The transit chassis cab and cutaway models join the industry’s broadest lineup of commercial chassis,” Ford says. The line-up includes E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis, F-Series Super Duty chassis cab, F-650 and F-750 medium-duty chassis cab and F-59 stripped chassis.

And, Ford said, the next generation of the Transit Con-nect range will add yet another CNG-ready engine when it goes on sale later this year, offering a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The smaller engine will make Ford-sanctioned QVM upfits available for a wider range of smaller vehicles.

Going green is also the responsible thing to do financially, as payback times have gotten shorter and more and more fleets are going green because they’re finding that’s where the money is.

The message of green on green was delivered forcefully at the NTEA-Calstart Green Truck Summit here yesterday.

The educational sessions at the Green Truck Summit are the best way to really begin your visit to learn what’s going on with clean tech-nologies for commercial trucks and understand trends occurring now and in the near future. The Summit offers sessions including a dialog with OEMs on the future of clean technologies, funding purchases of clean vehicles for fleets, technology business case discussions, and indi-vidual OEM product presentations.

Once the sessions are over, please make your way to the CALSTART Clean Technologies and Fuel Pavilion at the Work Truck Show. Within the Pavilion you’ll have a chance to see 40 of the most innovative clean truck solution providers.

Then it’s time to drive clean commercial vehicles in the Green Truck Ride and Drive. Experience the latest in cutting-edge clean vehicle technologies. Participation is free and available to all attendees.

During the three-day Work Truck Show, I want to encourage you to attend two special workshops we have organized. The first one is a workshop where you can learn about some very impressive state level incentives that are

currently being provided for fleets interested in reducing their dependence on oil. At this workshop, we’ll also be out discussing a plan to get more states involved in this effort – a par-ticularly important effort given the gridlock in Washington, D.C. This subject should be of interest to fleets, suppliers, and manufacturers. The CALSTART’s Workshop on State Clean Truck Incentives will be in Room 104 of the Convention Center on Wednesday, March 6 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

To also help build the market, with the sup-port of the U.S. Department of Commerce, CALSTART is working to grow exports of clean truck and bus technology in China. We have collected significant amounts of information on the China market and are planning our second forum in Shanghai in the fall of 2013. To learn more about this exciting initiative, we encourage you to attend CALSTART’s US-China Clean Truck and Bus Forum information meeting on Thursday, March 7 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in Room 104 (level 1) in the convention center. This meeting should be of particular interest to sup-pliers and manufacturers who want to enhance – or explore – business opportunities in China.

Lastly, I encourage you to visit the CAL-START booth #5459 and learn about the ben-efits of membership and our new programs and opportunities. We are excited about our efforts to build this industry nationally, and want to talk about how we can support your clean truck objectives. I wish you a productive, information-filled, and fun 2013 Green Truck Show.

Executives from the two compa-nies pointed to booming sales while speaking at the Green Truck Summit here yesterday.

Freightliner, which delivered 2,000 natural gas trucks over the last four years, sold 722 last year. It has 540 on backlog this year “and we’re only just into March,” said Freight-liner Trucks natural gas vocational sales manager Bob Carrick. Freight-liner is at Booth 4659.

Ford has sold 7,000 alternative-fueled commercial trucks thus far this year compared to 11,000 for all of last year, according to chief engineer Rob Stevens. Ford now has 27,000 converted trucks in service. Ford offers 26 alternative fuel models, ranging from the all-electric Ford Focus to the com-pressed natural gas CNG F-650

and F-750 commercial trucks. Ford is at Booth 3139.

Peterbilt (1825) engineering manager Frank Schneck didn’t disclose this year’s performance

but said his company sold 1,400 natural gas trucks last year. Of that total, 600 were refuse trucks, and 400 of the tally were fitted with the 15-liter, Cummins ISX-based engine Westport HD by Westport Innovations (5199).

The number of natural gas vehi-cles on the road will expand rapidly over the next few years, according

to Doyle Sumrall, senior director of business development at the National Truck Equipment Asso-ciation. A philosophy of change is overtaking the industry as operators see benefits flowing to the bottom line, and as more fueling stations make natural gas more practical, he said.

Sumrall cited Ohio as an exam-ple, where in 2008, Akron Metro RTA, the City of Columbus and SWACO opened three stations to fuel their 50 or so CNG vehicles with 45,000 gasoline gallon equiva-lents (GGE) that year.

Two years later there were four public and five private stations in Ohio supporting 82 CNG vehicles, and that leapt in 2012 to 30 stations and 628 CNG vehicles, which used 1.5 million GGE. Coming soon: another 10 stations and 200 more CNG vehicles, which are expected to use another 350,000 GGE.

“Nationwide, the infrastructure is building,” Sumrall said.

This will be the best-ever year for sales of natural gas trucks if early performance at Freightliner and Ford is sustained over the coming months.

Vouchers worth more than $37.7 million toward the purchase of 1,259 hybrid and electric and full battery electric trucks have been issued under HVIP, the Hybrid Voucher Incentive Program run by Calstart on behalf of the California Air Resources Board.

Totals through January include 903 hybrid electric and 356 battery electric trucks, accord-ing to figures furnished by CARB’s Joe Calavita.

According to Calstart (Booth 5459), the pace is picking up. “Since early December 2012, more than $750,000 in voucher applications have been received, marking a higher level of activity than we’ve seen during the previous two years,” says Kevin Beaty, Calstart VP and director of the orga-nization’s HTUF (High-Efficiency Truck Users Forum) program.

“With new vehicles and products becom-ing available, as well as next generation product improvements coming online from existing sup-pliers, we expect this renewed market momen-

tum to continue,” Beaty told ShowTimes affiliate Fleets & Fuels.

Beverage delivery and parcel delivery trucks

accounted for 32% and 31% percent of the vouch-ers issued, and 67% of the money. Food distribu-tion was third, with 142 trucks, and uniform and linen delivery vehicles accounted for 118 units (figures include vouchers in progress).

Freightliner (4659) and Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp (4559) supplied 364 of the HVIP-backed hybrid trucks to date, with Kenworth (1401) supplying 201.

Hino Trucks, which became eligible for HVIP funding with its 195h COE (cab over engine) hybrid late last year, placed 63 trucks with HVIP support through January. Hino is at Booth 4139.

HVIP has backed the purchases of 169 bat-tery electric trucks by Smith Electric Vehicles (5479) and exactly 100 by Stockton, Calif.-based Electric Vehicles International.

By region, the South Coast Air Quality Man-agement District, which includes Los Angeles, has been by far the biggest program participant.

The term “Green Fleet” will become just “Fleet” over the next decade as sustainability becomes business as usual. “Sustainability and the green industry are here to stay,” says Lee Styslinger III, chairman and CEO of aerial lift specialist Altec.

The keynote speaker at the Green Truck Summit’s opening session yesterday, Styslinger noted there is now real momentum in green business. It’s not just the right thing to do, but it flows to the bot-tom line: “We view sustainability as a value proposition,” he said.

That theme was echoed through-out the conference. The commercial vehicle industry is moving ahead with cleaner vehicles, with operators making money out of them, said John Boesel, president and CEO of Calstart.

That’s indeed so, added Doyle Sumrall, senior director of busi-ness development with NTEA, the Work Truck Show organizer. More emphasis is being given now to using analysis, tools and models to understand the paybacks on clean vehicles, and to show the benefits that flow to the bottom line.

Bob Carrick, natural gas voca-tional sales manager for Freightliner Trucks, gave an example: an opera-tor with a 10-year horizon buying a CNG truck could, if he drives long

enough distances, see a payback in just one and a half to three years at a CNG price of $2 to 2.50 a gallon. “That is huge,” he said.

Boesel said that Hino Trucks’ introduction of its 195h diesel-elec-tric hybrid is another example of benefits flowing to the bottom line. “Operators are seeing a two-year or less payback with the incentives avail-able,” he said, adding that he expects it to achieve a similar payback in the future even without incentives.

Even electric trucks have work-able economics: analysis by Calstart shows there is a sweet spot for elec-tric vehicles, with a 5-year payback when driven 65 miles a day.

Going Green ‘Is the Right Thing to Do’

Green Truck Summit keynote speaker and Altec chairman and CEO Lee Styslinger (left) with Pat Davis, manager of Vehicle Technologies in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy office.

“We’re not looking to Washington” to underwrite growth of alternative-fueled commercial vehicles says said John Boesel, president and CEO of Calstart, the non-profit consortium dedicated to promot-ing high-tech, clean transporta-tion, and co-host with NTEA of the Green Truck Summit. Instead, the group is focusing on the states.

There are different solutions for different regions, and Calstart

is helping states plan incentive programs to spur growth in their own regions.

“We are making major efforts with the states,” Boesel said. In California, which has an existing $20 million clean truck and bus incentive fund, Calstart is encour-aging extending the program until 2023. New York is close to launch-ing a $20 million program, Illinois (especially Chicago) is looking at

incentives for electric commercial vehicles, and Mississippi is looking at a tax credit for gaseous-fuel vehi-cles of 50% of the purchase price.

Calstart is pressing for incen-tives to be awarded as vouchers at the time of purchase instead of tax credits, simplifying the eco-nomic process and effectively reducing the purchase price of a vehicle when an operator buys it (see HVIP story below).

The Calstart Clean Fuel Pavilion centers on Booth 5459.

City of Chicago contractors Cumberland Ser-vice and RNOW are among the project partners for an all-electric garbage truck – and perhaps as many as 20 all-electric garbage trucks – with Crane Carrier chassis for the City of Chicago, project leader Motiv Power Systems said Mon-day. Many of the project participants are here in Indianapolis this week.

San Francisco-based Motiv is to deliver as many as 20 full-size Class 8 pure battery trucks to Chicago, according to a sliding scale with the later vehicles costing far less than the first one. The first battery truck is to cost something on

the order of $1.3 million, with prices dropping to about $500,000 per truck by the time of the 11th (Fleets & Fuels, November 20).

Chicago contractor RNOW (of West Allis, Wisc.) will supply a 20-cubic-yard Loadmaster Excel-S series body for the Crane Carrier chassis. The Loadmaster body will have a new PTO-mounted pump to minimize power draw and hence extend battery life – “an on-

demand-style hydraulic system,” says RNOW president Steve Krall.

The Crane chassis will be supplied by the Cumberland Service Center of Arlington Heights, Ill., another City of Chicago contractor.

Motiv’s ePCS is designed to allow easy sub-stitution of components, such as batteries and battery management system, as technologies improve. “The scalability and flexibility” of the ePCS drive is key, the firm said Monday. The contract with Chicago is worth as much as $13.4 million for as many as 20 battery trucks.

The Motiv ePCS employs “off-the-shelf

batteries and motors, which can be mixed and matched to fit the exact size and duty cycle of the electric truck needed.” The initial truck for Chicago will have high-heat (and thus weather-impervious) sodium nickel batteries from Fiamm SoNick – often still referred to as Zebra batteries.

Motiv says that its ePCS can handle EV trucks from medium duty to heavy duty, weigh-ing 15,000 to 52,000 pounds. “Research sug-gests the ePCS design approach cuts operating costs by 50% over an eight-year period,” Motiv says. The firm’s medium-duty pilot shuttle bus – which was at the 2012 Work Truck Show ride-and-drive – reduced operating cost from 80 cents per mile to 10 cents per mile.

“Motiv’s approach to the refuse market is the same as in other medium- and heavy-duty vehicle markets where we have worked before; find the best, most knowledgeable partners and build a team and product based on our com-bined expertise at a lower cost,” Motiv CEO Jim Castelaz said in the Monday release naming Cumberland and RNOW.

“These partners enable us to deliver a vehicle to Chicago that is not a science project, but consists of industry-standard components with strong, experienced suppliers standing behind every aspect of the vehicle.” www.motivps.com

Local distributor Monarch Beverage is paring its fuel costs with com-pressed natural gas – and enjoying payback after just two years, says truck supplier Kenworth.

Monarch has Kenworth T440s for beverage delivery and is look-ing forward to over-the-road trucks with the new ISX12 G engine from Cummins Westport.

“Two years ago we purchased two Kenworth T440s with the Cummins Westport ISL G engine, and a pre-production Kenworth T660 with the new 12-liter Cummins ISX12 G engine,” says Monarch’s Fred Dufour.

“No grant money was used, we paid the straight premium. We ran the trucks hard, on long-haul and regional routes, amassing more than 100,000 miles on each. Our fuel economy was 5.7 mpg (diesel gal-lon equivalent) compared to 6.2 with our diesel fleet. Since the CNG cost was just 30% that of diesel, the money we saved on fuel was substantial. We figured the payback for the up-cost on CNG equipment to be 2.3 years.”

“We have been running 27 of the T440s since June of 2012,” Dufour says. “And, other than having spark ignition and spark plugs to deal with, and a different kind of engine oil, there really is no difference in maintenance practices. From a fuel tank standpoint, they just need to be monitored and maintained, but our technicians have been trained and certified for that duty.”

There are maintenance advantages, too: “Positive trade-offs,” Dufour says. “With CNG we don’t have to worry about DEF and particulate filters since CNG is so clean burning.”

He says he’s happy with the T440s with 325-horsepower, 8.9-liter ISL G engines for loads under 65,000 pounds GVW. “The new 400-horse-power, 12-liter ISX12 G engines on order for new Kenworth T800s will power our over-the-road fleet where we load out at 79,000 GVW.”

“We have placed additional orders for Kenworth T440s,” he adds, “and by 2015, 90 of our 105 trucks will be CNG-powered.”

Savings are expected to amount to $2 million or even $3 million per year.

Kenworth is at Booth 1401.

Indianapolis-based Monarch Beverage operates Kenworth T440 trucks with 325-horsepower, 8.9-liter ISL G engines by Cummins Westport for loads under 65,000 pounds GVW.

Amp Holding, parent of Amp Electric Vehicles in Ohio, has purchased Navistar’s Workhorse assets through a new Amp Trucks subsidiary – and says it will be the first to offer a full line of factory alternative fuel vehicles. “If it’s alterna-tively powered we’ll make it,” says Amp founder and CEO Steve Burns.

“If someone’s thinking of non-traditional power,” Burns told Fleets & Fuels Monday, “we want it to be Workhorse, from a factory point of view.” The definitive agreement, for a price Burns says will be disclosed later in the week, covers the Workhorse brand, logo, intellectual property, patents, assembly plant assembly plant in Union City, Ind. – and a network of some 440 Workhorse dealers.

The deal is expected to close by March 13.Amp Trucks will maintain the Workhorse

name. “We want to be known as a horse of a different color – green,” Burns says.

The Union City plant closed down in Octo-ber, and will re-open according to demand. “The orders will drive everything,” Burns says. Amp will initially concentrate on battery electric

vehicles, but will also offer gasoline trucks, and will pick up propane and compressed natural gas when customers ask for it.

“The main thrust is electric,” Burns says.“With this acquisition,” the company said

Monday, “Amp will be positioned to be the first truck OEM in the United States to offer a range of alternative fuel vehicles produced in an auto-mated assembly plant.

“By offering an all-electric Workhorse chas-sis along with gasoline-powered, and alterna-tive-fuel powered models, Amp will become a

premier OEM capable of build-ing alternative fuel vehicles for the commercial market.”

Burns notes that the chief Workhorse competitor in the walk-in van market, Freight-liner Custom Chassis Corp, offers electric vehicles with drivelines installed by Electric Vehicles International in Stock-ton. Amp will do its own factory installations.

Dealer training will be rela-tively easy, Burns says, as Amp has designed its driveline for

repowers, which means it is effectively in kit form already.

Amp is using motors from Remy (Booth 5453) and large format prismatic lithium iron phos-phate battery cells primarily from China Avia-tion. Amp builds its own battery packs using a commercially available BMS (battery manage-ment system).

“We can pay back in four to five years and then it’s gravy for another 16,” Burns says – or gravy in as little as two years with incentives.

Navistar International is at Booth 3859.

California’s Quantum Technolo-gies, a provider of natural gas fuel systems including compressed natural gas fuel tanks, is promot-ing the outside hardware for a new 8.8-liter natural gas engine by Power Solutions International, as well as a line of complete bolt-on CNG fuel tank assemblies, both for medium duty trucks.

“Quantum’s new medium-duty CNG fuel systems are designed to provide a bolt-on solution to quickly outfit a truck to operate on CNG,” said Quantum president and CEO Brian Olson. “They are specifically designed for ease of installation, safety, durability and to provide maxi-mum value and operational ease.”

The production-ready CNG fuel assemblies employ Quantum’s Q-Lite brand all-composite lightweight Type IV CNG tanks. They are available in a variety of configurations, ranging

from 24 gasoline gallon equivalent to 64 GGE capacities.

Quantum’s plan is to supply the bolt-on CNG fuel tank assemblies for trucks, including trucks pow-ered by PSI’s new 8.8-liter engine. A naturally aspirated version will be rated at 250 horsepower and the turbocharged version at 350 horsepower, Quantum says. They are “specifically matched to the performance required for Class 4-6 trucks where there are very limited options available today.”

“Medium-duty truck manufac-turers haven’t had an option for CNG engines in the larger Class 4-6 truck applications,” said PSI CEO Gary Winemaster. “Truck OEMs have asked for an engine with the performance of our 8.8-liter CNG engine and we’ll be delivering later this year.”

Quantum notes that PSI offers

engines with displacements ranging from .97 to 22 liters – and has sup-plied more than 2 million of them. Quantum itself has supplied more than 20,000 alternative fuel sys-tems to OEMs including General Motors. Quantum says it “intends to supply select components to PSI to support volume production of the 8.8-liter engine.”

The Quantum CNG fuel tank assemblies come complete with integral fuel receptacle, pressure gauge, safety systems including

shut-off valves, pressure relief devices and pressure sensors, and fuel metering subsystems includ-ing pressure regulator and thermal management. “Available fuel sys-tem configurations include single, dual and triple module systems to accommodate a variety of popular medium duty truck platforms,” the company says.

Quantum is at Booth 5578.

Parker Hannifin’s hybrid drive systems division has formally launched its fuel- and brake-sav-ing series hydraulic hybrid drive for Class 4-6 medium duty trucks. The new handle, Parker IVT, is short for infinitely variable transmission with brake energy recovery technology.

“Medium duty trucks equipped with the Parker IVT use energy stored in a hydrau-lic high-pressure accumulator to seam-lessly propel the vehicle,” Parker says. “Stop-and-go operation of the vehicle recharges the hydraulic system and allows the truck to achieve a signifi-cant fuel economy improvement over traditional diesel-powered vehicles that use automatic transmissions, while also reducing emissions.”

“We are happy to broaden our hydraulic hybrid drive technology to include the Class 4-6 medium duty truck market,” said Parker hybrid drives GM Shane Terblanche. “From the results we are seeing with our early adopters of the tech-nology, up to 50% fuel economy improvement over a 7-month period, we fully anticipate that the Parker IVT will provide outstanding bottom line results for trucks in the snack food, beverage

and parcel delivery markets as well as vehicles serving the work truck segment in general.”

The Parker IVT has been tested for package delivery with U.S. DoE funding under Calstart auspices by FedEx, UPS and Canada’s Purolator

Courier. The Parker IVT is a smaller version of Parker’s RunWise hydraulic hybrid drive that has found success on Class 8 refuse trucks, notably the Xpeditor E3 by Autocar.

Over and above its highly efficient dual-mode operating system of using both the engine and hydraulic energy in series to propel the vehicle, Parker claims three IVT advantages:

• Brake energy recovery – the hydraulic sys-tem captures and returns approximately 71% of the vehicle’s kinetic energy for use in propulsion.

• Optimized engine control – decouples the engine from the drive wheels allowing it to oper-ate at higher efficiencies for a given power level.

• Engine-off – the system uses stored hydrau-lic power to operate the vehicle at low speeds while keeping the engine off. The vehicle also shuts down the engine during deceleration to reduce the amount of time the engine idles.

The Parker IVT also starts the engine, reducing wear on the 12-volt starter. The system powers the truck’s steering components as well, Parker says, while a mechanical connection

from the engine to the rear axle allows for an efficient power transfer during highway-

speed operation. “In terms of fuel economy, range and perfor-

mance, the Parker IVT is ideal for challenging pickup and delivery routes like those served by work trucks in the delivery service, beverage and snack food industries,” Parker says. “The efficient dual-mode operating system helps reduce operat-ing costs and inherently protects the environment through reduced emissions.”

Massachusetts-based XL Hybrids, which has developed kits to convert Class 1 to 3 commercial vans to hybrid electric operations for about $8,000, last week disclosed an installation partnership and distribution agreement with Leggett & Platt.

XL Hybrids UpfitsVia Leggett & Platt

Leggett & Platt is incorporating XL’s hybrid pow-ertrain directly into its existing ship-through pro-cess, “providing a one-stop shopping experience for commercial fleets,” XL says.

XL uses Parker Hannifin motors and spiral-wound lithium nickel cobalt aluminum cell bat-teries from Johnson Controls to improve vehicle efficiency. “By storing energy wasted in braking and reapplying it during acceleration, XL Hybrids technology decreases fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 21.2% on urban routes, while operating with the same durability and reliability as traditional vans and trucks,” the company says.

“XL Hybrids’ product makes economic sense for our fleet customers, offering a quick payback, along with all the benefits of ship through. The ease of installation is amazing and allows us to drop it right into our existing production pro-cess,” said Leggett & Platt install operations VP John Forest.

“XL Hybrids has a real winner here,” Forest said. “This partnership provides a great way for our fleets to reduce fuel costs, resulting in total life-cycle cost reduction.”

“The combination of our product and our relationship with Leggett & Platt will offer tre-mendous value for fleet customers who want a seamless order and low-cost delivery option for hybrid vans across the country,” said Clay Siegert, XL co-founder and supply chain VP.

He’s here at WTS2013, answering questions about the GM cargo van with an XL hybrid drive-line upfit on display at Leggett & Platt’s Booth 1421.

XL has previously named New England’s Hen-ley Transmission Services, with nine locations the largest franchise holder of AAMCO automotive service centers, as an installation partner.

“We do not intend to re-brand the OEM’s truck,” says Inventev founder and CEO Dave Stenson. “We intend to supplement it.” A key design strategy, he says, is to “dual-purpose the electric machines in the driveline” to provide both motive power and PTO.

Inventev is developing an “integrated next gen hybrid architecture replacing the existing transmission with a single propulsion unit while retaining the OEM engine as installed,” states an excellent write-up last month by the Green Truck Association (an arm of the National Truck Equip-ment Association, organizer of this NTEA Work Truck Show).

“Inventev’s ‘next gen’ inte-grated propulsion unit contains the necessary motors, clutches and gear ratios to operate the vehicle in multiple optimized modes (from full electric to a hybrid mix with the engine) for range extension or peak power

needs,” states the GTA report. “Much of the existing vehicle architecture is maintained since the integrated propulsion unit is packaged in the space about equal to the existing transmission.”

Inventev-modified trucks will also feature a max power mode to allow gasoline engine power “to be augmented with the electric

motor torque to provide a power boost replicat-ing diesel output during peak load conditions.

“This feature is useful to cus-tomers who only need the high torque characteristics of a diesel selectively, but could otherwise lower their base vehicle price by opting for the base [gasoline] engine,” says GTA.

“We’re in a pre-hardware phase,” Stenson told ShowTmes affiliate Fleets & Fuels. Depend-ing on his success with financing, a prototype truck could be available for show early in 2014.

He’ll be making the rounds of the NTEA Calstart Green Truck Summit and the Work Truck Show to spread the word about Inventev. “Between the Work Truck Show and the Green Truck Summit it is a particularly important industry event,” Stenson says, “in the top three

of shows for companies in green technology and upfitting of trucks.”

Roush CleanTech is now offering its propane autogas fuel system on Ford F-59, F-53 and E-450 stripped chassis. “With excellent vehicle range and affordable price points, these plat-forms are a home run for hub and spoke model fleets,” says sales and marketing Todd Mouw.

Roush is taking orders now for production and delivery commencing in May. Indiana’s Green Alternative Systems (Booth 4593), a Ford QVM – for Qualified Vehicle Modifier – is the lead installer.

“We’ve experienced high demand for alter-native fuel options,” says GAS general manager Sean Connolly.

The Ford F-59 commercial step van chas-sis and the Ford E-450 stripped chassis adapt to numerous fleet delivery applications, Roush says, including bakery, textile, multi-stop pack-age delivery service, linen and medical services. The F-53 offers a flexible commercial platform for trolleys and lunch trucks.

All three strip chassis models “fulfill cer-tification requirements in all 50 states by the California Air Resources Board and Environ-mental Protection Agency and achieve the same torque, towing and horsepower as convention-ally fueled models,” Roush says.

The Roush-mod-ified Ford F-53 and F-59 feature Ford’s 6.8-liter, V10 engine and come with a 67-gallon propane fuel tank. The Ford E-450 stripped chassis comes with a 41-gallon propane tank.

“The size and cargo capabilities of all three

platforms are customizable for specific busi-ness vehicle applications,” Roush says. An early adopter of the F-59 stripped chassis includes the City of Laguna Beach, Calif., for propane-pow-ered city trolleys.

The stripped chassis in propane “can help companies save $35,000 or more in fuel and operating expenses over the vehicle’s lifetime,” says Mouw. “And whether fleets use public fuel-ing stations or install onsite private refueling, they’ll find refueling is inexpensive and easy.”

Trucks based on the strip chassis and equipped with dedicated propane autogas fuel systems offer 40 to 50% lower operating costs, Roush says.

Propane autogas has historically priced 30 to 40% less than gasoline and 50% less than die-sel, and is “readily available through the largest nationwide network of refueling infrastructure of any alternative fuel option.” A newly reinstated federal tax credit provides an additional 50¢-per-gallon savings on fuel.
