It’s very important for designers to come to theshow to see the launches and what’s being talkedabout. It gives us the chance to see future productsthat may not be quite out there yet but that give anidea of what trends there are to come and what wemay be seeing in say the next two-to-ve years.

Tap into a Booming Market

Ideas that don’t cost the earth

but make all the difference:• Consider recommending a wetroom. Apart rom being uber

cool, wetrooms are incredibly easy or older people to use.

• Showers are considered easier to use than baths. Just make surethat when designing a shower area, there is a wide access point.

• Install a shower seat where the less able can sit onas they shower. It also doubles up as somewhereto sit and dry eet or younger people.

• Position support bars in places where elderly may need them.Bars can also double up as towel rails or shower poles.

• A cupboard based on ull width drawers oering ease oaccess can store up to 55% more than a cupboard.

• Modern, open plan kitchens orming part o the living space areeasier to negotiate in later years than smaller dedicated spaces.

• Full width handle designs on drawer ronted cabinets not onlylook good but oer ease o access to people with arthritis

Remember: It’s not a question o having products designedor older people to use, it’s designing a bathroom andkitchen that everyone in the household can use.

One of the eagerly-awaited seminar sessions at KBB

Birmingham this year is ‘Universal A ccess - Making the

Most of the Grey Pound’ which will be chaired by Ideal

Standard International’s designer Robin Levien RDI,

Britain’s foremost designer of bathroom products.

He has designed (with his colleague of 20 years, Dave

Tilbury) 15 per cent of all bathroom suites currently sold

in the UK, and is consistently at the cutting edge when

it comes to rethinking bathroom design; a room he

remarks is frequently no larger than a double bed.

“ As a designer, I get great fulllment fromdesigning products that t into the lives ofhundreds of thousands of people every day, ”

says Robin Levien.

“ All of us are living longer and the marketsof tomorrow must reect this.

I am greatly looking forward chairing the discussionand hearing what my fellow panelists have tosay about inclusive design and the bathroom.

I call it ‘future proong’ and this ts into what Iunderstand the Lifetime Homes initiative to beabout. To me, it makes perfect sense to designhomes and the kitchens and bathrooms in

them so that people do not have to move outwhen they get older as because the home theyhave lived in is no longer suitable for them.

To me, one of the biggest challenges we face isghting the aesthetic corner for universal access. We have to move on from the ‘Doc M’ solution. ”

From the front lineIndustry pioneers and exhibitors at KBB, Blum, design many

o their products with the aging population in mind. Using

the state-o-the-art Age Explorer suit they were able to, or

the rst time, truly understand lie over 65. As a result o this

study, Blum, has realised the benets to users o ull extension

drawers and pull-outs. More recently the company has released

the automated Servo Drive drawer oering ease o access.

Blum UK Sales & Marketing Director David Sanders said:

“ Most people in their middle to late 40s who areabout to invest in a new kitchen are looking atbuying a product that will last them 20 years”

Graham Group’s Andrea Geach, who heads up strategic

development across the company’s 30 or so showrooms

explained that little steps go a long way.

“ The success of a universally accessible bathroomis largely down to correctly identifying potentialusers and anticipating the needs of everyone whomay use the bathroom. We work closely witheach individual customer to not only identify and

ensure that specic accessibility requirementsare met but also to full design aspirations,in terms of the style and key features. ”

Did you know?

*Ten million people in the UK are over 65 years old.

* The market is worth an estimated £9 billion

*Britain’s over 65s now outnumber people under

the age of 16 and the real growth market forbusiness from now onwards is the 40-somethings.
