Audio and Video Seminars
Friday, October 28
Mechanics of Vinyl Playback
Presenter: Micha Huber
When: Friday, October 28, 3-4pm
Where: Thornhill West (see floor plan page 10) Cost: FREE with TAVES ticket
Vinyl playback is a complex interaction of
many mechanical factors. Various parts are
composed to work together in order to convert
the LP-groove into an electrical signal. Since
most of those mechanical processes take
place in very small dimensions, it’s not so easy
to imagine them and get an overview on all
the influences appealing to them. During this
seminar, we will explore the interesting aspects
of this very traditional way of music playback,
which continues to improve. This will help us
to understand our equipment better, get the
maximum out of it and – finally – forget about
the technique and enjoy the music.
Saturday, October 29
Moving to 4K

JVC Professional
When: Saturday, October 29, 11am-12 pm
Where: Thornhill West (see floor plan page 10) Cost: FREE with TAVES ticket
With the world of quality 4K content still

Building a digital library can be challenging
but rewarding. We will explore the world of
digital audio files and how to navigate within
the various formats and technologies available
for the home consumer. Covered topics will
include tagging files, lossless vs. lossy, file and
folder structure, storage and backup, ripping,
streaming and library managers. Please note
that some basic knowledge in operating a
computer is needed.
AV Receiver Shopping Guide

Cutting Edge Ultra HDTV Technology:
Why TV Continues to Look Better
Presenter: Mike Osadciw
When: Saturday, October 29, 2-3pm
Where: Vaughan West (see floor plan page 11) Cost: FREE with TAVES ticket
It’s been a few years since 4K TVs entered
the market promising greater detail than HDTV.
But it was not until 2016 that UltraHD 4K
televisions began to deliver bright, colourful,
and dazzling life-like images never before
seen in the home. What has changed since
then? Why are the images now brighter with a
significant improvement in colour? What makes
Ultra High Definition Television a revolution
in consumer TV rather than an upgrade?
What other equipment and compatibility is
needed to enjoy such fascinating images?
Join NOVO Magazine’s Video Contributor
Mike Osadciw as he explains why Ultra HDTV
technology has a significant impact on the
way we watch our favourite programs using
current LCD and OLED technologies, and
what’s to come in future.
Digital Music Player Shopping Guide
Presenter: Frank Labonte
When: Saturday, October 29, 3-4pm
Where: Vaughan West (see floor plan page 11) Cost: FREE with TAVES ticket
Are you considering taking the plunge into
digital music players? Do you know
exactly what you need? Do you understand
what you’re buying? The world of digital
music players is very convoluted. No one would
blame you for feeling lost and confused.
We invite you to join this workshop to help shed
some light on the topic. You will learn all
about the issues that face consumers when
shopping for digital music players. Topics
covered will include music file servers versus
digital music players, Sonos, digital to
analogue converters (DACs), USB DACs,
features, control options, connectivity, computer
based solutions, file storage (SSD, HD,
RAID) and backups. All are welcome so please

Saturday, October 29
Young Innovators Showcase
Presenter: Various
When: Saturday, October 29, 11:30am-1pm
Where: Grand York B (see floor plan page 10) Cost: FREE with TAVES ticket
Be inspired by startup entrepreneurs and
innovators all under 19! Jointly produced
by Summer Company, Ryerson University
Basecamp, Y2 Entrepreneurship Labs,
and TAVES, eight startup companies
will present their businesses. Some are
generating revenue, some aren’t – but all
share a passion for solving problems.
Comet Warriors: The Comet Warriors
(http://cometsrobotics.blogspot.ca) are made
up of 8 girls from Ecole Catholique Cathedrale
in Kingston, plus Nick (he’s a boy but the
team loves him just the same). Their project
involves salvaging silicon sawdust produced
when manufacturing of wafers for solar cells.
Ctrl-Z: Ctrl-Z is a co-ed First Lego League
robotics team from Bayview Glen School in
Toronto, consisting of seven energetic students
from grade 5 to grade 9. Consumers sort
waste incorrectly, contaminating recycling
streams, resulting in valuable recyclables
being lost to landfill. The Smart Sort Trash Bin
uses a number of compartments. The lids
of each compartment are attached to servo
motors, which are connected to a computer.
Consumers simply say what they would like to
throw out, and the bin uses voice recognition to
open the correct bin. When the waste is thrown
into the bin, a fact about waste and recycling is
displayed on the screen to educate consumers.
Good Club: Good Club is a clothing company
selling vintage jeans and t-shirts with one-of-a-
kind designs. Isabelle started the company to
pursue her passion in fine arts and business,
and she used the Summer Company program
to combine the two. Good Club is dedicated
to selling unique apparel that can’t be found in
mainstream stores.
Jabba Box: Aarti’s business is a health food
company that sells protein snacks in boxes to
those interested in living a healthier lifestyle.
Her product, the pro-bites box, consists of a set
number of protein bars with different flavours,
marketed and sold online through her social
media channels and website, as well as offline,
through farmers markets and pop-up stores.
Liqly: Anthony’s business is an alcohol
delivery service focusing on wines and beers.
An online platform that receives orders and
delivers them within a set service level time.
MG Solutions: Mathew’s business installs
and sells home hard drives. He markets his
company through community reach, supported
by offline and online marketing channels.
Sitto: SItto is a mobile app that connects
babysitters to parents. Parents discover
babysitters, match times and dates,
and pay electronically, addressing two
problems: limited access to babysitters and
inconvenient cash payments.
SpitStrips: Motivated by a number of
high-profile drunk-driving cases, a group of
high school students formed SpitStrips. Worried
by the increasing number of incidents involving
alcohol abuse, the team created the SpitStrip,
a small paper-based indicator capable of
detecting blood alcohol content from saliva.
After wetting the strip briefly, it is sealed in a
provided bag and quickly changes colour. The
colour can then be interpreted to aid decision-
making. (http://spitstrips.com)
Tiny Terras: Hannah started her business to
sell small decorative terrariums. Terrariums
are transparent glass homes for succulent
plants that are decorated with an assortment
of rocks, moss and, in Hannah’s case, cute
animal or dinosaur figurines. Upon Hannah’s
successful completion of the Summer
Company program at Ryerson University, she
decided to continue Tiny Terras as a home
business while she finishes grade 12.

evolving entertainment markets – Game,
Cinematic and Spectator VR.
VR’s immersive world offers game developers
