fragrance marketing, working for the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and the Cartier group. After 20 years, it was perhaps no surprise that his own commercial agency, 100ml, got around to launching its own men’s shaving line – Antiga Bar-bearia de Bairro, which translates into English as ‘old neighbour-hood barber shop’. ‘It’s a niche, artisanal line in the neo-classical style,’ Pereira explains. ‘It’s not vintage, pretending to be old, but the way the products are made and packaged respects the kind of qualities you often fnd in old things. I hope it feels like an old company that’s been reborn.’
It is also very Portuguese. Each of its products has been made with small, local companies. Its shaving mugs, for example, are handmade by Porcelanas Armindo e Gaspar Rocha in Ílhavo. Ivo Cutelarias makes its elegant cut-throat razors; Semogue is the special-

‘We get better quality working with these smaller companies,’ Pereira explains. ‘Take our shav-ing soap, for example. It’s a new formula and we had to work a long time with the manufacturer to get it right – the texture and the way it foams. They were happy to take the time. That works now – people are more careful now about what they buy. They want a brand with a story, with craft in its products.’
The company’s packaging graphics take their inspiration from the regional architec-ture. The soap’s packaging, for instance, takes its lines from the structure of Porto’s Dom Luís bridge and the balconies of the town’s narrow houses, while the patterning on its soap dish comes from the traditional ceramic tiles of Lisbon’s hip Príncipe Real

district. ‘And of course,’ Pereira
adds, ‘the colours, the yellow and
ochre, belong to most of the houses,
the roofs, the light of the sunsets on
the vineyards.’ Speaking of wine,
the wooden crates in which Porto
wine is transported are refected in
the design of Antiga Barbearia de
Bairro’s wooden boxes.
Antiga Barbearia de Bairro
was launched fve years ago and
this autumn launches a limited-
edition black and gold shaving
set to celebrate its anniversary. It
also ofers two scents inspired by
Lisbon and the Ribeira district of
Porto, both developed with Por-
tuguese lab I-Sensis. The latter’s
mix of Italian bergamot, bitter
orange, cedar wood and labda-
num, a regional rock-rose, evokes
the fragrance of port wine aging in
old cellars. This itself is perhaps a
nod to the past – from the 1920s to
the 1940s Portugal had a vibrant
fragrance industry, producing for
brands such as Rochas, Worth and
Nina Ricci.
‘Why such a Portuguese
favour? Well, I’m Portuguese
and I like the idea of Portu-

as embalagens dos sabonetes,
replicam as linhas da estrutura
da Ponte D. Luís no Porto e das
varandas das estreitas casas da
cidade, e o padrão da saboneteira
vem dos tradicionais azulejos do
moderno bairro lisboeta do Prín-
cipe Real. Luís Pereira acrescenta,
“E claro, as cores, o amarelo e
o ocre pertencem à maioria das ca-
sas, dos telhados, à luz dos ocasos
e das vinhas.” A propósito de falar
de vinho, os caixotes em madeira

‘There aren’t many well-known
brands from Portugal out there
in the world. I don’t want this to
become the kind of brand you get
everywhere. One thing I learned
working in the fragrance industry
is that you must have patience to
develop a real authenticity for a
new brand. It has to be part of the
local world it came from. And of
course you can’t work with the
likes of Gaultier without learning
about creativity.’
One day, naturally enough,
Pereira would like to open his own

em velhas adegas. Por si, isto é
um aceno ao passado - da década
de 20 à década de 40, Portugal
possuía uma vibrante indústria
de fragrâncias, produzindo para
marcas como Rochas.
“Porquê um sabor tão por-
tuguês? Bem, eu sou português
e agrada-me a ideia de marcas
portuguesas,” explica Pereira.
“Não há muitas marcas portugue-

quero que esta se torne no tipo de
marca que se encontra em todo
o lado. Ao trabalhar na indústria
perfumista aprendi uma coisa, é
que tem de haver paciência para
desenvolver a verdadeira autenti-

de ser parte do mundo onde teve
origem.

Portugal Fashion has been championing the country’s design talent for 20 years. Madeleine Murray-Lyons fnds out more about the event that is helping Portuguese designers take their place on the world stage
THE FLAG
In the ever-changing world of
fashion, when a catwalk event
celebrates 20 years of existence
it’s a sign that its output is of the
highest quality. Portugal Fashion
is one such show, and has been
fostering spectacular design talent
for two decades.
The frst Portugal Fashion
event took place in 1995, featuring
supermodels Elle Macpherson and
Helena Christensen and showcas-
ing the work of now established
designers such as Nuno Gama
and José António Tenente. ‘The
event was the idea of the board of
ANJE [the Associação Nacional
de Jovens Empresários, a national
association of young entrepre-
neurs] at a time when there was a
clear need to close a gap: there was
a burgeoning entrepreneurial class
and a group of designers who were
beginning to show themselves,’
explains João Rafael Koehler,
Portugal Fashion’s president.
No sempre mutável mundo da
moda, quando um evento de
passarela comemora 20 anos da
existência, é sinal que o seu output
é da mais alta qualidade. O Portu-
gal Fashion é uma grande mostra
que há duas décadas promove o
fantástico talento em design.
O primeiro Portugal Fashion
teve lugar em 1995, contou com a
participação das supermodelos Elle
Macpherson e Helena Christensen
e apresentou o trabalho de novos
designers como o Nuno Gama e o
José António Tenente. “O evento
foi uma ideia do Conselho de
Administração da ANJE (Associa-
ção Nacional de Jovens Empresári-
os) numa altura em que havia uma
clara lacuna a ser preenchida: havia
uma forescente classe empre-
sarial e um grupo de designers que
começavam a mostrar-se,” explica
o presidente do Portugal Fashion,
João Rafael Koehler. “O sucesso do

‘The success of the event con-
frmed the need to establish a proj-
ect that would bring about a closer
relationship between the textile
and clothing industry and national
designers, promoting them jointly
in Portugal and abroad.’
Just four years later, the event
had developed a global focus,
taking the work of fve Portuguese
designers and eight Portuguese
brands on tour and presenting this
at São Paulo Fashion Week. ‘It
was a landmark event for Portugal
Fashion, which took a step forward
in its international promotional
strategy,’ Koehler says. ‘Since
then, the project has made the
internationalisation of Portuguese
fashion one of its cornerstones,
holding campaigns in cities as var-
ied as Paris, Barcelona, Istanbul,
London and Berlin.’
Portugal Fashion has fostered
some of the county’s greatest
talents, helping to develop their
careers and go on to achieve great
success. Koehler cites Felipe
Oliveira Baptista. ‘Thanks to the
visibility he gained in Paris, he
earned the position of creative
director at Lacoste.’ The achieve-
ments of individual designers, such
as Oliveira Baptista, help to beneft
the country’s fashion industry as a
whole, adding value to Portugal’s
design output and reminding style
fans why Portuguese brands are
worth investing in.
‘Portuguese fashion can be
proud that it now has a unique
profle,’ says Koehler. ‘This has
been created from the fusion of
two distinct realities: a past with
de estabelecer um projeto que
unisse a indústria têxtil e do
vestuário e os designers nacionais,
promovendo-os em conjunto tanto
em Portugal como fora.”
Apenas quatro anos volvidos, o
evento tinha desenvolvido um foco
mundial, levando o trabalho de
cinco criadores portugueses e oito
marcas portuguesas em digressão
e apresentando-os na Semana
da Moda de São Paulo. “Foi um
evento marcante para o Portugal
Fashion que deu um passo em
frente na sua estratégia de
promoção internacional,” diz
Koehler. “Desde então o projeto
fez da internacionalização da moda
portuguesa um dos seus pilares,
apresentando campanhas em
cidades tão variadas como Paris,
Barcelona, Londres e Berlim.”
O Portugal Fashion promoveu
alguns dos maiores talentos
nacionais, ajudando a desenvolver
as suas carreiras e a atingir grande
sucesso. Koehler menciona o Felipe
Oliveira Baptista. “Graças à visi-
bilidade obtida em Paris, alcançou

a strong tradition in producing
clothes and shoes, and a pres-
ent with strong industrial and
creative dynamics. The result is
a concept of qualifed fashion,
benefting from technical quality
and original designs.’
In addition to championing
brands that have been showing
at the event since its inception,
Portugal Fashion is also concerned
with promoting the next generation
of Portuguese design. Portugal
Fashion’s Bloom competition was
launched in 2010 and aims to
attract designers between the ages
of 18 and 35. Stylist Miguel Flor
selects the designers the project will
support and helps to structure their
fashion shows, which take the form
of performance-based displays
rather than typical catwalk events.
Koehler believes the Bloom
project spells economic success for
Portugal and its fashion industry.
It’s a stepping stone for emerging
talent, he says, and it invigorates
the national fashion panorama
‘by facilitating the integration
a posição de diretor criativo da
Lacoste.” Os êxitos individuais dos
designers, como o Filipe Oliveira
Baptista, ajudaram a benefciar
a indústria da moda portuguesa,
dando valor ao design português
e lembrando aos fãs da moda por
que vale a pena investir em marcas
portuguesas.
“A moda portuguesa pode
orgulhar-se de possuir um perfl
único,” diz Koehler. “Isto foi criado
a partir da fusão de duas realidades
distintas: um passado com forte
tradição na confecção de roupas e
calçado e um presente com forte
dinâmica industrial e criativa. O
resultado é um conceito de moda
qualifcada, benefciando da quali-
dade técnica e de designs originais.”
Para além de apoiar marcas
que participam desde o arranque
do evento, o Portugal Fashion
também se preocupa em promover
a próxima geração de designers
portugueses. Em 2010 foi lançada
a competição Portugal Fashion’s
Bloom cujo objetivo é atrair jovens

of new designers into the labour market and bridging the gaps at design level in sector companies.’ More designers in the market, he explains ‘means added value for industrial production and a higher volume of business in the fashion sector ‒ in shows, showrooms, fairs and auditions.’ This, he adds, also supports all the diferent people who work in fashion ‒ models, hairdressers, stage man-agers, make-up artists, sound and light technicians, photographers and more.
Portugal Fashion has helped the country’s designers focus on developing their business acumen as well as their creative skills. As Koehler says, ‘It has given design-ers the incentive to add a business strategy to their activity, without afecting the aesthetic component of fashion.’ In 20 years of honing the country’s design talent and shaping designers into success-ful creative directors, Portugal

Fashion has developed from an acclaimed national project into an international event that helps to beneft the country’s fashion industry, taking Portugal one step closer to competing with the likes of London, Milan and Paris on the world stage. ‘The maturity of the project is clearly seen, not only in the experience acquired in organising fashion events, but also in the development of professional and business structures and in the implementation of strate-gies for promoting the sector at international level,’ Koehler says. Portugal Fashion goes beyond the parameters of the usual catwalk shows, making it unique in the global style landscape.
BULGARI
Bulgari’s rich heritage plays a key part in its autumn/winter collection, with inspirations taken from popular past collections. References to the snake-themed Serpenti line, one of the Italian brand’s best-known ranges, can be seen both in this season’s shapes and in snake-head adornments on the clasps of bold-coloured bags. Jewellery continues the serpent theme.
NEW TWIST
Founded by Porto-born designer
Telma Olivera, Wek – which
stands for Wearable Compliments
– is bringing a unique new
concept to the world of jewellery.
Olivera has created the pieces
from the cords traditionally used
to tie grape vines to their
supports in Portugal. The cords
can be twisted and overlapped for
various diferent looks, and added
individuality comes from their
unique scent-absorbing
properties – they will gradually
take on the fragrance of your
favourite perfume. hl
Fundada no Porto pela designer

que signifca Wearable
Compliments, traz um conceito
novo e único ao mundo da
joalharia. Telma Olivera criou as
peças a partir das cordas
tradicionalmente usadas em
Portugal para atar as videiras
aos seus suportes. Versáteis e
fexíveis, as cordas podem ser
torcidas e sobrepostas dando
origem a visuais variados.
