From the Rabbi How good it is to be together on this day!
Last year we gathered online as a community to bring
in 5781. Like so many others, it was a year where we
experienced highs and lows except that we were also
living with a pandemic. The fear and anxiety pro-
voked by this now mutated (and highly contagious)
virus had all of us retreating like turtles into our shells,
emerging only for what we needed to survive. Life’s
joys were pushed aside in our efforts to remain uninfected.
Fortunately three different Covid vaccines were granted emergency approval-and one
just received full FDA approval. Our Jewish community has always believed in medi-
cine and vaccination. This is demonstrated by a recent Public Religion Resource In-
stitute study that showed that 85% of Jewish people are vaccinated—the highest of
any religious group or ethnicity.
Being together at Sinai this year is a vast improvement over last year’s online only
presence. Still, those of us who will attend Sinai in person for Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur will again find ourselves vaccinated—and masked. When we encounter
each other’s faces, we will all look a little harder at creating connections with our eyes
as the warmth our smiles create will be covered.
It is my hope that whether you are in our sanctuary or joining us online, you will be
inspired by prayers, divrei Torah, and music that will reach your core. As we enter
5782 we are hopeful that the old year and its curses will be replaced by the new one
with its blessings, for life, health, and all that is good. L’shana Tovah.

From the President
This is a special and exciting time of year for Jews all over the
world. The High Holy Days are a moment when one can feel the
anticipation, and, perhaps, the emotion, in the air. Even those who
come to worship with us for only these two holidays are moved to
be present. One question I am asked by congregants is if we are
really going to come together in person as a community. The
answer is yes. For those who want to be at Sinai in-person the rab-
bi and our cantorial soloist Wayne Abravanel are prepared to lead
us in prayer and music. In turn, we greet one another as the
strong, diverse community that we are and for that I am so grate-
ful.
Last year many of us noticed the loss when services were streamed
to our homes. We were unable to interact with one another, something that we have
long taken for granted. Still, it showed the strength of our community by participat-
ing in the services and all of the online services and activities the temple created for
the benefit of its congregants during the pandemic period when we our building was
closed.
This year I ask you to pay attention to what it is like to be together to pray and social-
ize with friends and fellow congregants. A community such as ours does not just hap-
pen. It is a precious gift that takes work, cultivation and nurturing for all of us to
flourish. This year is a renewal for all of us and for Temple Sinai. May we all be writ-
ten for a good and sweet new year as we move into our new year together.
L’Shana Tovah.
