Update on Agricultural Services and Disaster Services projects
Agricultural Services - Overview
Prototype development in cooperation with collaborating agencies to
prove the usefulness of interoperable systems to support applications.
Purpose
Seeking more sufficient way to present observation data into higher level information rather than just showing images.
Recent Target: Present Information derived from EO Data
• Time Series Vegetation data is the major data.
• To determine the presence of a problem (e.g. drought), firstly, quantification is needed.
For Agricultural Monitoring (e.g. Drought Monitoring)

Vegetation Stages of crops
E.g. rules to interpret reduction in vegetation(drought vs. other cause)
Quantification of the vegetation data and comparison of them are initial stepsto interpret the data into a drought interpretation.

User Requests
i. MMI to present information in a user friendly way so that user can examine data to interpret vegetation information. (E.g.) Graphs with editable data ranges, period ranges. Easy switching of target data layer
ii. Quick response (small waiting time) iii. Re-use of data in user side (E.g. in KML format)
- Client - side Data Rendering (Visualize numeric data within end user’s browser )
- Data server to serve real NDVI data not only NDVI Image- Export image data in such as a KML file

Quantification and Comparisonof Vegetation Changes per GIS Region
Provide quantified information:- Vegetation per Region- With comparative data
- Layers are quickly switchable
- Graph and Data Tables are quickly switchable
for easy data comparison and interpretation

Disaster Services projects - Overview
Earth observation images are often utilized better with comments and interpretations.
• Present EO images and maps related with land condition, associated with general knowledge on land vulnerability.
• Develop prototype WMS system to prove concept.
Purpose
No. 1~10 :Flood Observed Points
What have done
-> Built web mapping system presenting marks and notes also, to show explicitly the focusing points.
Achievements
Present images with use cases- Provide optional menus to present pre-selected pairs of images with short
explanations how images could be interpreted, from the view point of potential land condition (against flood).

Necessity of Functional Enhancement
• Marks and comments, (and polygons) will be more valuable, if none-system developer (e.g. users, experts) can create those by themselves. (write-able application)
• Marks and comments, (and polygons) may be more useful, if those are associated with not only geo-location, but also with info such as which data they concern.
What is missing
• Export capability of data (and comments, polygons) to be re-used by users.
• Polygon will be helpful to precisely indicate the area of interests.

• Comments are descriptions (e.g. image explanations, interpretations, opinions) which are related to both geographical feature and dispersed stored images.

Activities
Refine comment records’ field and format.
• Land Use in 1976, 1987, 1997 of the country
• Satellite Mosaic in 1990, 2000 of the country
• Thematic Maps
Adopt multiple data resources in WMS related to land use and land condition.
Consider the way to apply ALOS data to cultivate ALOS usage.
Expand functionality
Ongoing
Future Plan
• handle polygon in the application• write-able functionality to encourage user involvement
Overall Conclusion
Keep on close work with collaborative agencies to focus on usage–oriented investigation and development.
Focus on establishment of methods to translate Earth observation satellite data into information useful in agricultural services and disaster services.
Functions will be built in taken care of modularity so that components would be easily adopted into other application flexibly.
