A ROTARY CHALLENGE

Just what is this thing called Rotary? Ask any of the more than 1.2 million Rotarians and you are sure to get as many different answers.

Basically, Rotary is an organization made up of many men and women who are dedicated to unselfishly volunteer time, energy, and yes – even money, to im-prove the lives and wellbeing of millions of people world-wide.

Where did this come from? How did it all start? How can so many individuals from so many countries work toward common goals?

The answers to these questions are readily avail-able. You can learn all these answers and so much more about this fascinating organization through District 5190’s Rotary Academy. In ten easy lessons – each around an hour or so to complete – you will gain an in-depth knowledge of how Rotary began, how it evolved, and what the plans are for the future.

Rotary International recently made significant changes in its policies. The Academy course has been updated to address these changes. This can easily be the best way for you to learn expectations and discover many areas in which your club has more flexibility to accommodate changing lifestyles. There is no fee for the course and reference material is provided on Dis-trict 5190’s website. Simply complete and submit the on-line registration form and begin your journey to an enlightened Rotarian. To register for the Rotary Acade-

my access the District’s website and click on Learning and Resources and on the drop-down menu click on D5190 Rotary Academy. Once your registration form is submitted and acknowledged you are on your way.

The more we know about and understand the history and evolution of Rotary, the more we understand why we are each proud to be a Rotarian.

Carol Sharp, Rotary Club of Alturas Chair, District 5190 Rotary Academy

At the February 21st meeting of The Rotary Club of Bishop, Randy Van Tassell led the induction for new member Doris Santiago. Doris’ sponsor is Dr. Leo Pisculli and he will help her get involved in the club’s many community projects and in contributing to Rotary’s broad range of humanitarian service pro-grams.

Doris Santiago is a licensed Psychotherapist and Life Coach at the Alpine Center in Bishop. She has a Masters Degree in Psychology and a Masters De-gree in Alcohol and Drug Counseling along with be-ing certified in Domestic Violence Treatment and Intervention. Doris has worked and lived in Bishop since 1986. She has a son, Donovan Santiago and two granddaughters. She came to Bishop because of the appeal of living in a small town where she could enjoy the “down to earth living.” She spends her spare time pursuing her hobbies of art, music, gardening and specializing in Filipino cooking.

Doris feels she can contribute to Rotary because of her belief in mindful living and wholeness, along with her optimism, patience, tenacity, and faith in God. She believes in Rotary’s slogan “Service Above Self” and is ready to start working on their service programs which include a community gar-den, helping at the schools and other activities that involve giving to those in need.

When asked if there was something interesting about her, Doris answered she was born and raised in the Philippines and has a passion for restoring people to wholeness and connection with each other. She helps by providing sup-port and encouragement.

President DeEtte Johnston said she is honored to have Doris as a club member and is looking forward to working with her.

The Rotary Club of Bishop meets every Tuesday at noon at Astorga’s Mexican Restaurant. Visitors are always wel-come. Lunch is $12.00 Call DeEtte Johnston for infor-mation about our Rotary club: 760 872 7970

DORIS SANTIAGO INDUCTED INTO THE ROTARY CLUB OF BISHOP

Approximately 13 club members of the Rotary Club of Jackson descended on the Interfaith

Food Bank of Amador County on Saturday March 25th as they began the conversion of the

building’s lighting from interior fluorescent and exterior arc lights to energy efficient LED

lighting. This is their major community service project for the year which was aided by dis-

trict service grant (DSG) money. The DSG was in the amount of $2000 which helped off-

set the total project cost of $6600. The crew started gathering at about 8:00am and the pace

was fast and furious. The bulk

of the work was completed by 10:30 which raised the

question: “How

many Rotarians

does it take to

change a light

bulb?”

Congratulations to the winners of the 49er Rotary 2017 Speech Contest. Bonnie Brown, beside Club President Dick Law, left, placed first and Miles Lozano, next to Speech Contest Chairman Phil Ruble, right, placed second. Christina Martin and Ben Arenchild tied for third.

Speech Contest winner Bonnie Brown, a Nevada Union HS jun-ior, spoke passionately about the worldwide refugee crisis and how Rotary can help deal with this humanitarian issue.

Placing second was Niles Lozano, a sophomore at Ghidotti Early College HS, whose topic was illiteracy. Third place winners Chris-tina Martin and Ben Arenchild, who both attend Ghidotti, won $25 prizes. Martin spoke of the importance of education while

Arenchild spoke of the economic benefits of an adventure economy. Thanks to Speech Contest judges Julie McManus, Gil Mathew, Ben Aguilar, Jennifer Granger and Ed Townsend, banker Julie McEnroe and timekeep-er Andy Burton.
