For anyone who wants to learn to spin yarn on a spinning wheel. This class will cover parts of the wheels, wheel maintenance, how to choose a fleece or roving and learn to spin a good yarn.

High School or Adult newbies or novice spinners are welcome.

Students should bring their fiber and spinning wheel, if they have one. An assortment of fiber will be available at the class.

The Inkle loom is a small loom on which you can weave bands of various widths. The bands can be used for bracelets, key chains, belts, straps for instruments, hat bands or sewn together to make bags.The Inkle loom is a great inexpensive introduction to weaving.

Patty has been a handspinner for over 10 years. She has sold dyed roving, art bats and dyed sock blanks under the Creekside Farms label. Patty has taught several fiber art classes at SMFAF. Her recent interest has turned to weaving, she is a member of Tuesday Weavers at the Appalachian Art Center in Norris, TN and a juried member of Townsend Artisan Guild in Fiber Arts.

In this class each student will complete a woven band and sew it into a keychain. Students will learn to warp the loom with a pre-cut warp, thread heddles, weave a band and complete the keychain.No weaving experience necessary. Inkle looms will be provided by the Tuesday Weavers of the Appalachian Art Center in Norris, TN

Chris has a BS in Recreation Program and Administration from the University of Montana. He has many years of instruction in camp recreation. He is a member of the Scenic Valley Handweavers Guild.

Weft Interlock, Clasped Weft, also known as Cleft Weft weaving is a weaving technique that will allow you to shift colors lengthwise along your warp to create unique shapes and patterns. This technique can be used on any loom.

Not only will you learn the technique for Clasped weft weaving, you will also learn how to make a “heddle stick”, use a sword, and multiple shuttle sticks.

A loaner loom and loom supplies will be provided to each participant for class use.

Come learn the techniques forPlain weaving from the start to the finish. You will weave on a six inch “weave it” style loom making a 12 x 12 washcloth. The techniques you will learn may be applied to any size “weave it” style pin loom.

The first hour and a half will be devoted to instruction and weaving the first of 4 pin loom squares, in the second and third hour you will weave on your own, completing the three remaining squares.. The last half hour will be finishing this project into a 12 x 12 washcloth.

Jonee is from Wheaton, Missouri. She has been active in fiber arts since 1991. She first learned to weave, then spin. She is an avid crocheter who loves to share her knowledge. She and her husband have a small farm where they raise alpacas, sheep, and Boer goats.

Wagon Wheel rugs are made on a variety of round frames. The name refers to the spokes that appear in the design. These rugs are most often woven of heavier fabric so the tension on the loom does not become overwhelming.

WET FELTINGLATTICE WRAP

Create a classy felted open work wrap using superfine Merino roving. It’s lightweight for all seasons, can be worn in multiple ways and has no limits to the number of colors used in its construction.

This class is a great introduction to wet felting or just a fun addition to the skills you already have. Once mastered the lattice technique can be used later for edging on bags, pillows or table runners.

Students should bring 15” x 3 yards (at a minimum) small bubble (3/16”) bubble wrap, ½ length pool noodle, scissors, stocking legs or elastic for ties, small container about 6 cups size, plastic bag for carrying wet projects home, hand towel.

All other materials will be provided by the instructor.

Geri is a longtime weaver, felt maker and lover of all fiber techniques. She teaches both children and adults and exhibits her work internationally. Learn Weft-faced weaving on the Tayet Tapestry loom. True tapestry has a weft facing while the warp disappears into the structure and packing of weave.

We will warp the travel loom in class and practice the techniques of weft-facing, adding joins and adding colors.

In most ancient depictions of spinning there is always a distaff.

In this class we will learn how to use several different forms of this tool including: the ancient Etruscan ring distaff, the Viking Osberg distaff, the Elizabethan bodice distaff, and the modern wrist distaff.

Teresa and her husband Robin both retired from corporate-type jobs and bought a small farm in central Illinois. She has enjoyed fiber arts for most of her life: sewing since her teens, rug hooking since 1980 and spinning and weaving since 1994. Since retirement, her focus has been on expanding and improving on her fiber skills and learning to care for her flock of Finn and Shetland sheep.

For Beginners and Experienced Rug Hookers alike.

In this class we will practice basic rug hooking techniques, as well as some fun techniques such as proddy flowers, sculpted hooking and beading.

The instructor will provide the pattern and materials. Also, embroidery hoop, rug hooks and scissors will be available for use or purchase in the class. Students may bring their own equipment if they desire.

Have you heard about Distitch? It’s a new knitting technique that may look like traditional knitting, but every stitch works through TWO horizontal rows rather than one producing a dense, sturdy, complex structure.

Mary Jo has taught knitting for the last 10 years at various sheep and wool festivals. Under her designer name, Jo Harris, she designs knitting patterns and has written a book entitled “Double Knitting -Inside Out” Mary Jo is a member of the Madison Knitters’ Guild.

Have you seen the new Tapestry Knitting technique used on the Miss Grace patterns of SKEINO LLC?Using two or three colors, this technique encases small short row sections within garter stitch ridges to create a wave or mermaid like scale appearance. It looks more complicated than it is.

Mary Jo has taught knitting for the last 10 years at various festivals, Knit-In’s and Madison College. Under her designer name, Jo Harris, she designs knitting patterns and has written a book entitled “Double Knitting-Inside Out” which is available on Amazon and Ravelry. Mary Jo is a member of the Madison Knitters’ Guild and an employee of the Wisconsin Craft Market.

Students must bring two or more colors of worsted weight yarn, needles in a size to match your yarn, stitch markers, usual knitting accessories, paper and pen for taking notes.

POTHOLDER LOOM WEAVING

Andy Lyle is a native Oak Ridger and graduate of UT Knoxville. She has been weaving using the potholder loom since she was a child, moving to larger looms in the 1980”s. She is a member of the Foothills Craft Guild, Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsman and the Locally Grown Gallery in Oak Ridge.

Each student will weave at least one regular potholder, then advance on to a small bag or more complicated 2 piecewallet or eyeglass case. Both of these will be woven with a variety of yarns. Each student will receive a booklet with detailed information on multiple items they can make and a vinyl bag to hold their supplies.

Students may bring their own metal potholder loom or use the Metal loom included in the cost of the class. If a student wishes not to keep the class loom, they will receive a $15 refund at the end of the class.Additional loopers and looms will be available for sale with a discount for all class participants after the class.

I love to teach and create new items. I have been teaching craft classes for over 5 years. I am also a member of the Foothills Craft Guild, as well as a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America, Knoxville Chapter.

In this class you will learn to make the stuffed felt form, apply the beads, and anchor the finished berries onto a backing for a brooch.

Sounds tricky, but it’s easier than you think!

Some basic knowledge of sewing by hand, and the ability to work with small items is helpful.

No experience needed. Students, please bring scissors. You may bring any vintage buttons or components that you’ve been dying to make into something special.

A lifelong crafter, Lori has always “had” to make things. She loves sharing her knowledge with others and studying the history of any craft she explores. Lori is a member of the Embroidery Guild as well as a member of the Handspinners Guild. Her classes have always received excellent feedback.

Make a handcrafted cuff using felt and a variety of embellishments. All sewn; no messy glue. Explore steampunk themes, dieselpunk, or create a showcase piece for a bit of vintage jewelry. Judy is a juried member of the Triad Artisans Association and an artist member of the Yadkin Arts Council. Judy teaches in her studio, at local Arts Councils and the Shenandoah Valley Fiber Festival. She has won numerous awards for her work and recently won Best of Show at the WV Fair with an all needle felted piece.
