NCRAR Conference Big Success
OnOctober8-10,2003,NCRARhosted168attendeesfrom28statesplusDenmark,Switzerland,andBritishColumbiaatitsinauguralconference,“AuditoryRehabilitation:AMultidimensionalApproach”.TheconferenceopenedwithareceptionwhichwasattendedbyconferenceparticipantsandspecialguestsincludingrepresentativesfromtheofficesofSenatorRonWyden,CongressmanEarlBlumenauer,CongresswomanDarleneHooley,andCongressmanDavidWu,officersofVeteranServiceOrganizations,andmembersoftheNCRARNationalAdvisoryBoard.ThereceptionopenedwithanofficialproclamationfromPortlandMayorVeraKatzproclaimingOctober 8th to10thAuditoryRehabilitationDaysinPortland.

Drug May Protect Ears From Chemotherapy
Ongoinghumanclinicaltrialswithsodiumthiosulfateareshowinggreatpromiseinprotectingtheearsofbraintumorvictimsfromchemotherapydamagetotheinnerear.
Upuntilthetrialsbegan,50%ofbraintumorvictimswhoreceivedchemotherapyhadsevereenoughhearinglosstorequireaids.Nowit’s5%.
Trialsinchildrenarebeginning,andthemanufacturerhopestoreceiveapprovalbytheFoodandDrugAdministrationintwotothreeyears.

Community Access Hearing Assistive Technology Program
InAprilof2000,theOregonHardofHearingandDeafAlliance(OHHDA),anadvocacycoalitionofover25public,non-profitandfor-profitorganizationsrepresentingOregonianswithhearingloss,appliedforatwoyeargrantwiththeMeyerMemorialTrusttofundaHearingAssistanceTechnologyproject.ThegoalsoftheCommunityAccessHearingAssistiveTechnologyProgram,CAHATforshort,aretoenablepeoplewithhearinglosstofunctionatparitywithhearingpeopleandtoimprovecommunicationamongthosewithhearinglossthroughtheavailabilityofhearingassistancetechnology.InOctoberofthesameyear,theMeyerMemorialTrustapprovedthegrantof$48,000“topurchasehearingassistancetechnologyandequipmentforstatewidedistribution.” (TheMeyerMemorialTrustwascreatedbythepersonalphilanthropyofFredG.MeyerandisinnowayconnectedwithFredMeyer,Inc.)
CAHATequipmenthasnowbeendistributedto7sitesthroughouttheStateofOregon.TheintentoftheprogramisnottoreplacetherequirementsofentitiesmandatedbytheAmericanswithDisabilitiesActof1990toprovideaccessibilityforhardofhearinganddeafindividualsparticipatingintheirprograms.Rather,thepurposeistomakeassistiveequipmentreadilyavailabletothegeneralhearingimpairedcommunity.Therearetimes,however,whensomeorganizationswillbecalledupontoprovideaccessforeventsthatwillhavemanymorehearingimpairedparticipantsthantheyareequippedfor.LoanofequipmentbytheCAHATprogrammaybeapprovedifitwillbeavailableatthetimeoftheevent.

Wearinghearingaidsonfullvolumeoftencreatesfeedback.Turndownthevolumeorhavethehearingaidscheckedifyoualwaysneedhighvolumetohearproperly.
Andincorrectlyfittedearmoldcancausethehearingaidtomakethewhistlingsoundandyouneedtobeseyourhearinghealthcareprofessionaltogetanewormodifiedearmold.
