I’m most at peace when I’m outside. I love the swell of the ocean waves, the perspective I get on
top of a mountain, the beauty of my flowering plants, and viewing different kinds of trees. I have a
Jacaranda and Mulberry tree out front. In the late spring, I get a myriad of lavender flowers on the
branches of the Jacaranda and then they fall like snowflakes onto my driveway. The Mulberry tree
has lots of leaves that shade part of the front and at its apex, I get to pick its juicy bumpy fruit. It is so
sweet that my friend Ruth comes over to pick at the first harvest.
Maybe I spend too much time looking at the screen of my phone or computer, but when I’m
outside appreciating nature, I feel recharged. We actually have a minor holiday in Judaism that is
designed to connect up with nature and more specifically with trees. On Monday, January 21, we will
celebrate Tu Bishevat, the New Year for the trees. The name is actually its Hebrew date that translates
as the 15th day of Shevat. In the Talmud, the rabbi’s believed that trees are judged on this day.
Hopefully with enough rainfall, they will blossom in the spring and produce healthy fruit in the
summer. The mystics liked to view Tu BiShevat as an opportunity to connect with the changing
seasons, fertility, and God. For modern Zionists, it’s a chance to plant a tree in Israel as our pioneers
did in transforming the desert into the flourishing country it is today.
So here’s how I like to ideal celebrate the New Year for the trees. I always plant a tree or two in
Israel through the Jewish National Fund. They are $18 dollars and you can do it in honor or memory
of a loved one. http://usa.jnf.org/jnf-tree-planting-center/
I put roasted almonds, dried apricots, dates, figs, and olives out for me and the kids to have a taste
of Israel. If I have time, I plant something new on my property. And perhaps this year, I’ll treat my
tenth graders to a mystical Tu bishevat seder where they will sip white grape juice as it transforms red
and nosh on fruits and nuts that represent degrees of holiness. For sure, on Sunday night, January 20,
I’ll be gazing at the sky and hopefully seeing the full moon of Shevat.
There is so much beauty in our world. There are so many reason to celebrate life, our world, and
the incredible trees surrounding us. May your Tu Bishevat be delightful and meaningful.

Rabbi Myers Dec/Jan 2018-2019
Rabbi Myers has been such an important part of our
congregation and our community for the past 15 years. Her leadership and
guidance have helped to navigate Beth David through choppy waters and
led us to celebrate great milestones and achievements. A pillar in the local
Jewish community, as well as a leader amongst her peers, Rabbi Myers
always puts Beth David first. Her sermons inspire us. Her warmth is
infectious. And I bet she knows each and every one of your names.
That is why I am happy to announce that the board has approved a new
contract with Rabbi Myers, which will keep her at Beth David for many
more years. We are confident that with Rabbi Myers's leadership,
compassion, and vision, that Beth David will thrive. So as we move
forward, let's all congratulate and thank Rabbi Myers for all she does, and
let's look forward to more to come. There is no doubt that our future just
got a little brighter.
Sincerely,
Eric Schiffer Eric Schiffer, President

Beth David Brotherhood
By Charlie Niederman Dec/Jan 18/19
November was a busy month for Brotherhood with three events. We can be proud of how well they went.
By any measure, the Chanukah Carnival was a success. The children had fun with the booths, the video games, and
the inflatables The food, hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken salad went over well and were supplemented by Sister-
hood's latkes. So many pitched in to help, I may miss some. Matt Salzman, and Robin Harrison did planning and
ordered inflatables and the game truck, and followed through on them and a variety other actions during the carnival.
Food was prepared and sold by Lee Netzer, Howard Toby, Steve Harris. David Fisher, Isaac Indich, and Rick Katz.
Jeff and Sue LeBoff , Cathy Niederman, and Jan Klein sold tickets. Scott Telford handled the prizes, helped with
food and generally filled in where needed. Brotherhood also thanks our generous sponsors who make things possi-
ble. Our Platinum Sponsors: Diane & Howard Spielman, Chris Taxier & Sharon, Marcie, Deb and families, Frieda
Caplan, Anne Hoogasian, Eugene Broscow, Fran DeKovner.
Our Gold Sponsors: Carolyn & Maury Rosenberg, Jeff & Sue Leboff, the Jarrick Family, Sidney Laham
Hallie & Joel Berman, Garry Plotkin, Charlie & Cathy Niederman, Robin & Mulu Harrison.
Our Silver Sponsors: Mickey Lewin, the Lelchuk Family, Florence Sudakow and Steve Harris & Yu-Fen Chiang
Harris.
Brotherhood, led by Lee and his wife Elaine, Mulu Skinner- Harrison, Scott, and Jeff provided the dinner for the
Veteran's Synaplex. The Synaplex turned out so well we hope it will be repeated.
Professor Donald Schwartz provided background and did a Q and A for the "Jewish Journey-America" video and
brunch. The brunch was the vision of past president, Steve Harris. It was a well presented story of Jews in America.
Lee, Jeff, and Mulu prepared the bunch.
On Sunday morning December 16 th Brotherhood will present an important and timely brunch, "Emergency Prepar-
edness Seminar". Recent events in Pittsburg and Anchorage have made us aware that we all need to be pre-
pared for manmade and natural disasters. David Baroway, an emergency preparedness consultant in company with a
Westminster Police Department officer will present the seminar. Be there to learn the best strategies to greatly im-
prove you and your family's chances to safely survive emergencies.

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!
By Laurie Schneider, Sisterhood President
SISTERHOOD
Dec/Jan
SISTERHOOD MATTERS…
I hope that everyone had a warm and wonderful Chanukah! Our Chanukah carnival was very
early this year, but it was nonetheless a day of successful fun and fundraising. So many
people helped, please know you are all appreciated, but too many to list. So I will just
highlight and thank our chairs: Lisa McCall and Anne Farber coordinated the vendors,
Renee Dorfman and Eileen Tobey led the latke baking in the kitchen, Mickey Lewin was
responsible for the bake sale, and Linda Cohen and Rachelle Wilson chaired the Judaica
shop. Thank you all for jobs well done!
January will bring some excellent and varied programs. On Saturday evening, January 12,
Sisterhood joins with Brotherhood for a dinner for all of our paid members. There is still
time to pay your Sisterhood or Brotherhood dues and join us for this delightful evening!
On Sunday, January 13th at 9:15 AM, there will be a brunch with the first of our Sisterhood
speaker series – Depression: What is it Exactly and How Can I Help? A difficult topic to be
sure, but one that touches so many people, it is sure to be worthwhile. We have intentionally
scheduled this for a Sunday morning while our children are in school, so parents can be
available to attend.
Finally, we will close out the month with a trip to Pechanga on January 29th. Always a fun
day!
For more details and RSVP information, look for flyers in this Megillah and in Shavuah Tov.
I hope to see many of you at these events!
Shalom,
Laurie Schneider

This week the Israel National Police, after a
lengthy investigation, announced that they had sent
a recommendation to the Attorney General for an
indictment of Prime Minister Netanyahu on a third
set of corruption charges. It was done despite
controversial legislation passed last year to prohibit
police from publishing their recommendations in
investigations of public officials. However the law
was passed while the current case was under
investigation.
The response in the government split along party
lines with the opposition calling for the Prime
Minister to resign. The coalition members felt that
the police were conspiring against Netanyahu and
that the chief should not have made the
announcement. They believe that the charges were
politically motivated. Since this is the third
corruption case against the Prime Minister pending
action by the Attorney General, it was not a
surprise. But, it is another problem for the ruling
coalition which now has only 61 members in the
120 seat Knesset. The resignation of Avigdor
Lieberman as Defense Minister rattled the coalition
and left a vacancy which is being filled by
Netanyahu. Many analysts believe that the
government will not survive until the scheduled
election next October, and that an election could be
called as soon as late February.
With regard to the US peace proposal those
involved are recommending that President Trump
release the plan in February. However, if early
elections are called, the belief is that the
announcement will be further delayed because it
might make the election a referendum on the peace
plan.
Culture Minister, Miri Regev, pushed legislation
that would grant her the power to withhold public
funding for cultural organizations “that are working
against the principles of the state.” This attack on
Israel's democracy has been delayed by two
members of the ruling coalition voting against it.
The above has been drawn primarily from Israel
Times
Now is the time that we should consider joining
ARZA. Rabbi Josh Weinberg, President of ARZA
reminded us the role that we can play.
In Israel, in order to be a realist, you must believe
in miracles.” ~David Ben Gurion famously
uttered the above quote as he eschewed the
miraculous establishment of the State of Israel.
This week we marked 71 years since that fateful
day when, miraculously, on November 29, 1947,
thirty three nations voted as part of the United
Nations General Assembly in favor of a Jewish
State. No doubt one of the great modern miracles
of our time.
Recently 25 Knesset members joined a last-minute
gathering jointly led by ARZA and the
Conservative movement and agreed that it is upon
us to step up and redefine what it means to be
Jewish in the Jewish State. It is up to us to show
that despite the miracles we must not depend on
miracles. We must bring the day. That is why we
ask for your support. That is why on Hanukkah we
continue to fight for our Freedom and
our Religious Equality. That is why we have the
opportunity now to expand our reach and say that
the miracle of having a Jewish State goes hand in
hand with the miracles of democracy, equality, and
tolerance. You can join at https://www.arza.org/

Two Men
Two Traditions
It was the night before Christmas...it was always the night before Christmas when I went with
my father to buy the least straggly looking tree left on the lot. Each year we brought one home,
never before Christmas Eve, by edict of my mother, and the two of us lovingly decorated it. My
father was in charge of the magical sparking lights that danced in beautiful colors when plugged
in. I was in charge of the icicles and taking the glass bulbs out of their boxes, and then carefully
hanging them on the tree, turning this straggly, unwanted tree into something beautiful. All the
while, my orthodox Jewish, but no longer practicing, mother stayed far away in the kitchen,
taking no part in the living room tradition, but making a single contribution each year by baking
a batch of delicious cookies. As I got older, I was allowed to stay up and watch midnight mass
at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on TV curled up against my father, all the lights off except the tree
lights. One week later, at the end of New Year’s Day, my mother would order, “Get that tree
out of here,” and I would be resigned to my task. This tradition continued through my college
years, until I left home, into the arms of my husband.
And happy day, a new tradition was born. Now, the lights sparkled in the kitchen, with all of
the family together, including a mother, now a grandma, two wonderful children, and a husband
and wife. The sparkle came from the flickering flames, as we lighted the menorahs. The
delicious smell of latkes, instead of cookies, came as the greatest latke maker, Max, presided
over the frying pan. And we all sang silly Chanukah songs. Max was excused from singing as
his repertoire consisted of exactly one note, which he sang over and over, thinking he was
creating a melody. For Grandma, Sarah, and James, this tradition was magical. For me, a little
bittersweet….memories and traditions became intertwined.
Both men are gone now. But they left me with sparkling light, delicious tastes, and most of all,
unconditional love.
Happy Chanukah, everyone!
Shalom and love, Florence Florence Sudakow

The Halbreich Family Some people go to Disneyland, “the happiest place on
earth”, when visitors come to town, or when there is
something special to celebrate. The Halbreiches, Mitch,
Kelley, Lizzie, and Vivi, are part of the Disneyland family...can you imagine that?
It is their ‘happiest place on earth’ whenever they need it to be.
Mitch and Kelley met in California, but both were born in Long Beach, 3,000 miles apart.
Yes, Mitch was born in Long Beach, New York, while Kelley was born in Long Beach,
California. So, of course, they were destined to meet. Even their college courses were
similar. Both majored in Business and actively use their degrees in their professional
lives. Mitch is in sales at Enterprise Car Rentals. I know, because at one time, he
actually helped me rent a car! And Kelley, well, she is Senior Leader at Disneyland’s
California Adventure, in the Retail Operations Division. Woo Hoo…..Disneyland, here
they come.
And they go to Disneyland and just about everyplace else, with their two daughters,
Lizzie, age 14, and Vivi, age 12. Before becoming a bat mitzvah, Lizzie sang in the
Junior Choir. Vivi, who is still studying, continues to sing in the Junior Choir on family
nights. Mom and Dad give back to Beth David, as well. Mitch has been a Temple Beth
David board member, and Kelley is active in the Beth David Sisterhood.
As a family, the Halbreiches love going on new adventures. They especially like hanging
out at home with their dogs. And if you know them on Facebook, you will know they
recently moved into a new home. The dogs, of course, demanded more room!
Temple Beth David is special to the Halbreiches, just as they are special to Beth David.
They all love that there is something for everyone at Beth David. You can be as involved
as you want to be or choose not to. Either way you are a valued member of the
congregation.
Have you Met……………...
Ben Raymond Abraham will be called to the Torah at Beth David as a Bar Mitzvah on January 26th.
Ben is a 7th grader attending Bell Intermediate School. He is active
in the Animal Amigos club. He played the trumpet and was active in the temple Jr. Choir. He likes to play Just Dance and spend time with his friends. For his mitzvah project, Ben is helping Animal Amigos protect
animals and conserve the environment through beach clean-ups and helping at the local animal shelter. Ben is the son of Rachel Abraham and the grandson of Susan Abraham and the late Dr. Raymond Abraham.

To Our Temple Beth David Family:
As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of
services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent
economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to
the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money
on many purchases that you normally make!
We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more
than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then
will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on
the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as
well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some
examples of companies that participate in the program:
Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,
Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,
Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.
These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the
Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the
Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at
the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and
the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the
Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for
the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for
charitable organizations with this program.
Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through
Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet
search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will
also add up to real money for the Temple.
We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for
the generations to come.
With best regards,
