I joined Zhejiang University in May 2004 as a professor in electrical engineering. I was the vice director of the
Institute of Aerospace and Special Electrical Machines from February 2006 to August 2009. I have been the
director of the Institute and the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering since August 2009, and was the
dean assistant of the College of Electrical Engineering from December 2012 to December 2014. In the last
national evaluation, the College was ranked the Top-4 in China and Department was ranked the Top-5. Since
June 2007, I have also been the leader of the Research Group of Aerospace, Special Electrical Machines and
Drives.
As the College dean assistant, I was mainly in charge of international collaboration, such as students
exchange and joint degree programs, employee recruitment from other countries, as well as international
propaganda. Since December 2014, I am still in charge of the international.
As the Department head, I am in charge of most administrations in the Department, such as postgraduate
education, research activities management, new research directions proposing, laboratory development, and
personnel administration (i.e., recruitment of new staff member, professorship promotion, making rules of annual
evaluation). The Department received research funding of 308.6M CNY in the last 5 years, which is the highest
among the 4 departments in the College. The research outcomes (e.g., patents, papers, national and provincial
awards, grants) of the Department are well recognized (ranked Top-5 in China).
As the Institute director, I am in charge of managing the research activities in the Institute. In the recent 5
years, the Institute received research funding of 101.6 million CNY, i.e., 1.35M CNY per capita per annum
which was ranked the 2nd of the 9 institutes in the College.
I am also the leader of the Research Group of Aerospace, Special Electrical Machines and Drives, which is
within the Institute of Aerospace and Special Electrical Machines. Currently the Group has 1 professor (i.e.,
myself), 3 associate professors, and 1 senior engineer, as well as 4 post-doctoral researchers. Also, the Group has
6 PhD students and 16 Master students. The Group is one of the first five ISO-9001-qualified research groups at
the University. In the recent 5 years, the Group has received national grants (7.77M CNY in total) of 4 projects
of Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC 51077116, 51007079, 51377140, 51577165), 2 projects of
National Basic Research Program of China (2011CB707204, 2013CB035604), and 1 project of National High
Technology Research and Development Program of China (2011AA11A101), as well as much research funding
from industries. The Group has strong technical links with industries. By way of example, the Group developed
high-speed motor systems for aircraft compressors, high-efficiency motors for vessel propellers, high-torque
low-speed direct-drive motors for oil field pumps, high-speed motors and generators for electric-assisted turbo
chargers and gas-turbine generator systems, permanent magnet synchronous generators for small power wind
energy systems, high-torque-density motors for electrical vehicles, and machines and drive systems for many
other applications. The Group is well reputed by the Chinese electrical machines industry.
