Resident with Music in the Round, Ensemble 360 brings together eleven world-class musicians to form one versatile group; five string players, five wind players and a pianist.

Welcome to our Autumn Series, which this year is a truly epic journey through time. Categorisations such as “Baroque”, “Classical” and “Romantic” can be useful for defining how a piece of music is going to sound, but none are required here. This is all simply great music. There is an opportunity to hear two outstanding young string quartets, the Piatti Quartet and the Heath Quartet, who have already emerged on to the international stage. Onyx Brass presents a spectrum of spectacular brass writing from the sixteenth century to the present day that includes Malcolm Arnold’s peerless Quintet. And it is a personal pleasure to link up with my Orlando Consort colleagues for a performance of glorious thirteenth-century music in Sheffield Cathedral that demonstrates the astonishing ingenuity and brilliance of medieval composers. Complementing these programmes, Ensemble 360 is launching our exciting partnership with our new Associate Composer, Charlie Piper.

This is followed by the latest work for family audience by our Children’s Composer in Residence, Paul Rissmann – the gloriously titled Sir Scallywag and the Golden Underpants! Ensemble 360’s concerts are underpinned by the motif of “transformations” and feature works that have appeared in more than one guise. Some of these instances are easy to spot, but we hope that you will join us for as many concerts as possible to discover the full depths of the Ensemble’s cunning.

Wednesday 10 October, 7.45pmEnsemble 360 BEETHOVEN Duo for Clarinet and Bassoon in C WoO.27 No.1 BRITTEN Three Divertimenti for string quartetCHARLIE PIPER New Work for Sextet WORLD PREMIEREMOZART Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in A K581 Ensemble 360 brings us a fusion of old and new, featuring pieces by three of the masters of classical music alongside the first commission by Music in the Round’s newly appointed Associate Composer Charlie Piper. His piece is inspired by Britten, whose centenary we celebrate in 2013. Britten’s Divertimenti, written when he was in his early twenties, brim with youthful energy. They were originally part of an unfinished suite intended as a series of portraits of the composer’s old school friends. Beethoven’s Duo for Clarinet and Bassoon is a witty miniature, contrasting Mozart’s passionate Clarinet Quintet, which takes the listener on a sweeping journey through human emotions. Tuesday 16 October, 12.45pmPiatti Quartet

SCHUBERT String Quartet in C minor D703 QuartettsatzBARTÓK String Quartet No.3 MENDELSSOHN String Quartet in A minor Op.13 Winner of the 2010 St. Martins in the Fields Chamber Music Competition, the Piatti Quartet has performed at the Purcell Room, Southbank Centre and live on BBC Radio 3 numerous times. This year the group was chosen to participate in the Wigmore Hall String Quartet competition as well as the Future Classics tour. Mendelssohn’s youthful Quartet in A minor was influenced by late Beethoven quartets. He uses his own song Is it true? as a recurring theme, reminiscent of Beethoven’s Must it be? theme from his last complete work. Schubert’s single-movement Quartettsatz has a romantic temperament and furious intensity, and heralds his late style, paving the way for his three late, great string quartets. As in much of his music, Bartók drew on folk melodies as inspiration for his dramatic Quartet No.3. It is a thrilling piece brimming with varying instrumental effects. Thursday 18 October, 7.45pmHeath Quartet MOZART String Quartet in E flat K428 TIPPETT String Quartet No.4 TCHAIKOVSKY String Quartet in E flat minor Op.30 Rapidly emerging as a quartet with its own exciting and original voice, the Heath Quartet has already won first prize in the Tromp International Competition and second prize in the Haydn International Competition. Equally at home with classical and contemporary repertoire, the members are part of the Wigmore Hall’s Emerging Talent scheme, for which they plan to perform a complete Tippett cycle. Mozart’s String Quartet in E flat is part of a set dedicated to Haydn, upon which he inscribed, “Here they are then, O great man and my dearest friend, these six children of mine”. Tippett’s fourth String Quartet, premiered by The Lindsays in 1979, explores the journey of a human life through an unbroken sequence of movements. The structure mirrors that of Beethoven’s Op.131; Beethoven was Tippett’s compositional hero. Tchaikovsky’s emotive Quartet in E flat minor was dedicated to the memory of his friend, violinist Ferdinand Laub. The searching expression of the first movement and grief of the third movement’s funeral march is contrasted by the cheerful second and life-affirming final movement. The Sonata À Thérèse juxtaposes a glowing first movement with one of his wittiest creations in his second movement, in which dynamics and register are greatly contrasted. The first movement of Op.54 has been likened by Alfred Brendel to the story of Beauty and the Beast; the first theme is a charming minuet which gradually tames the aggressive and lumpen second theme. Thursday 8 November, 7.45pmThe Orlando Consort: The Anonymous MonkSheffield Cathedral* Matthew Venner ALTOMark Dobell / Angus Smith TENORDonald Greig BARITONE Arguably the greatest steps forward in western musical history were made around the year 1200 at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The award-winning Orlando Consort demonstrate how radical rhythmic and harmonic developments not only allowed composers to create a stunningly beautiful and magisterial chant and polyphonic repertoire, but also determined the course of compositional development for many centuries to come. Interweaving the music are readings from the irreverent observations on medieval life of a contemporary monk from Bury St Edmunds – “Anonymous IV” – and the concert ends with a rare performance of Perotin’s magnificent Viderunt omnes, a musical landmark that still shines brightly after 800 years. £15 / £10 Disabled & Unemployed /£5 Under 18s & Students

Thursday 29 November, 7.45pmDjango Bates’ Belovèd Django Bates PIANOPetter Eldh DOUBLE BASSPeter Bruun DRUMS “Bird Lives” was the prophetic graffito seen on a New York wall soon after Charlie Parker’s death and it continues to testify to the remarkable time-capsule from the future that was bebop.

In this concert the Belovèd presents the compositions of Parker and Bates from its new album Confirmation. Django’s originals stand out in their own right but also serve to re-contextualise Parker’s lines, using the same rhythmic and harmonic signature that is brought to bear in his astonishing re-workings of “Donna Lee”, “Confirmation” and others. Thursday 29 November, 12.45pmEnsemble 360 SZYMANOWSKI Mythes Op.30 for violin and pianoBEETHOVEN Sonata for Violin and Piano in G Op.96 Szymanowski’s Mythes were written at a time at which he was exploring modern French and Russian music, and the influences of Debussy and Ravel can be heard here. He became fascinated with ancient Greece, an interest which led to the creation of this piece, whose three movements each explore a different myth. The first depicts a water nymph escaping from the god of the river, the second illustrates Narcissus’s love of his own reflection which ultimately leads to his death, and the third portrays Pan and the Dryads.

Beethoven’s final violin sonata could be considered the epitome of this form. It is grand and noble yet deeply expressive, full of gentle lyricism. Tickets: £10 / £7 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students

Following the success of The Chimpanzees of Happytown and The Lion Who Wanted to Love, this laugh-out-loud musical adventure is the new children’s concert by Music in the Round’s Children’s Composer in Residence Paul Rissmann, based on the book written by Giles Andreae, illustrated by Korky Paul and published by Puffin, Penguin Books Ltd.

King Colin wasn’t clever and King Colin wasn’t bold, but what made King Colin special were his underpants of GOLD.

When King Colin’s golden underpants go missing and the royal bottom is bared, it’s Sir Scallywag to the rescue! Brave and bold, courageous and true, he’s the perfect knight for the job… and what does it matter that he’s only six?!

Alongside pieces such as Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks and Rossini‘s William Tell Overture, Sir Scallywag features lots of audience participation and illustrated projections (including a brief appearance of the King’s bare bottom!).

BACH Oboe Sonata in G minor BWV 1020ROUSSEL Trio for Flute, Viola and Cello Op.40 HAYDN Trio for Flute, Oboe and Cello in G Hob.IV/3 LondonLUTOSLAWSKI Grave: Metamorphoses for cello and pianoHAYDN Symphony No.104 in D London Arr. Salomon for flute, string quartet, double bass and piano

Bach’s Oboe Sonata contrasts bright and lively sections with serene, flowing lines. Although the piece is credited to Johann Sebastian Bach, some scholars believe it was written by his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel.

Haydn’s Trio was written when the flute was becoming popular in England. Also subtitled London, his Symphony No.104 is considered to be the crowning glory of his symphonic works.

Grave was written by Lutoslawski as a memorial for Polish musicologist Stefan Jarociński, and opens with a quotation from Debussy’s opera Pelléas et Mélisande, on which Jarociński was an expert. Grave features an intense dialogue between cello and piano, moving on to rhythmically vigorous sections and virtuosic lines before its spectral conclusion.

Tuesday 4 December, 12.45pmEnsemble 360 SCHUMANN Fantasiestücke Op.73 for double bass and pianoCHOPIN Nocturne in D flat Op.27 No.2 for pianoPROKOFIEV Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Op.94 Schumann’s well-loved Fantasiestücke is played on many different instruments, and here is transformed on the double bass. Each movement has its own character and mood: nostalgia, tender and expressive; relaxation, light and playful; vigour, fiery and passionate. The first of his nocturnes to be published as a pair, Chopin’s popular Op.27 complement each other beautifully: the feverish intensity of the first is contrasted by the serene lyricism of the second, heard here. Prokofiev’s luminous Sonata for Flute and Piano radiates with optimism and joy, and it is hard to believe it was written during the years that the composer was evacuated from his home country during World War II. It opened to astonishing success in Moscow, its playful elegance and sparkling lines delighting audiences. Tickets: £10 / £7 Disabled & Unemployed / £5 Under 18s & Students

Thursday 6 December, 7.45pmEnsemble 360 MOZART Quartet for Oboe and Strings in F K370FINZI Interlude for Oboe and String Quartet in A minor Op.21SALLY BEAMISH St. Andrew’s Bones for violin, horn and piano BRAHMS Quartet for Piano and Strings in C minor Op.60 The spirited Oboe Quartet was written by Mozart for Friedrich Ramm, who was by all accounts an extraordinary oboist. It features subtle virtuosity and irresistible melodies from start to finish. Last year Sally Beamish wrote a string quartet for the Elias Quartet, which was commissioned by, and premiered at, the BBC Proms, and for which she won a Royal Philharmonic Society award this year. Here Ensemble 360 performs her piece St. Andrew’s Bones, which draws on a thirteenth-century hymn, ninth-century Scottish bronze bells and the medieval horn, creating a stark and poignant echo across the centuries. Brahms’s stormy Piano Quartet is full of tragedy and despair, and spans twenty years of his compositional career; he began writing it in 1855-56, and didn’t return to it until 1873, completing it in 1875. This year we take a lead from the Greek scientist and mathematician Archimedes and celebrate some extraordinary ‘Eureka’ moments in music history. There are occasions when the introduction of a single new idea – sometimes simple, sometimes grand – has changed the whole direction of musical development through the ages. The works in these concerts are full of such instances.

Our expert guides are the members of Ensemble 360 and a fabulous array of guest artists who, as well as offering their individual insights into pieces that stand as turning points in musical development, will share with us their own personal experiences of revelation and inspiration.

Recommendations

22.

We asked the Friends of Music in the Round to vote for the pieces in the Autumn Series that they were most looking forward to hearing and to give a reason why. The three pieces that received the most votes are:

HAYDN Symphony No.104 in D LondonArr. Salomon for flute, string quartet, double bass and piano

"As far as I'm concerned the greatest composer of all time. It's a great privilege to be able to hear Haydn's last symphony in this form and just the sort of repertoire that suits Ensemble 360 down to the ground." see page 19 for concert details

BRAHMS Quartet for Piano and Strings in C minor Op.60

"With the sole exception of the Clarinet Quintet, the Brahms opus 60 is quite simply the most wonderful piece of chamber music that he ever wrote." see page 20 for concert details

SCHUBERT String Quartet in C minor D703 Quartettsatz

"[I'm looking forward to] Schubert because of his command of melody and the dramatic colour in his harmonies. Anyone who plays rock or folk music would be amazed to see the chords Schubert uses! " see page 7 for concert details

There’s a great sense of community between Friends at concerts which adds to the warmth and spirit of every event.
