NHBP’s Newest Staff Member: Denise Koning~ Manager of Human Resources and Organizational Development.

I began work with NHBP in May of this year as the Manager of Human Resources and Or-ganizational Development. I come to the Tribe with 20 years of government experience at the federal, state and local level and seven years of experience as a local government executive and human resources professional. I am a graduate of Hope College and a na-tive of Southwest Michigan. While at work, you may find me working with staff and departments on strategic planning, staff development and training, or assisting the Tribal Council with various matters. This includes: organizational development, emergency management or policies and proce-dures. When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, garden-ing, golfing or cooking. I am very excited to be working with such a dedicated and diverse group of individuals! I look forward to working with the staff and Tribal Council to provide the best possible services to Tribal Members and their families.

Greetings to the Membership: Our Casino is well under way and if you have been watching the web cam you have seen the steel frame go up and, I might add, without any accidents (see story below). Clark has been telling us this is the fast part of the building. Clark Construction has made a real ef-fort to keep our Tribal Members working. We have been watching the

numbers of workers to keep it at 20% native employment, with Huron Members being the first to be called to work. If anyone has any questions about Tribal employment please don’t hesitate to ask the Tribal Coun-cil. Jamie has been working with Clark to ensure that our Tribal Members are working. We have been working with Denise Koning, the Human Resources Manager, to update all of the policies and pro-cedures for our Tribal

government. This has been on our agenda for several years and the new policies are about ready to be pre-sented to the staff. We have been receiv-ing monthly reports from the staff again, and we will be work-ing with Denise to make sure all job ti-tles and descriptions are completed before we start the budget process in November. There will be a Hal-loween Party for all Tribal Members, and we would encourage

Let’s Get Healthy, Let’s Get Involved, and Let’s Get Excited About Our Future!

all members who would like to help to contact the office. You will be directed to those who are working on the party. The members always find this a great time to re-lax and enjoy the youth and their antics. I hope to see many of you at the tour of the casino on October 9th (see back calendar or pg. 2). Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this beautiful fall season. Megwetch. Best regards, Laura

One day, after attending a meeting in Marshall, I decided to stop by the casino site and take a few “progress pictures”. While I stayed out of the way of the workers, I was able to zoom in on the building and get a few good pictures to update membership. This is when I noticed a tiny Christ-mas tree on the building in the Northwest corner. See photo below. The next day I was asked if I have a photo of this tree that has been placed on top of the casino. It just so happen that I had just taken this picture the day before. Councilman, Henry “Tiq” Bush Jr., told me that I should ask Duane Wixson (Senior Project Manager) from Clark Construction what this tree symbolizes and why it is there on the site. Naturally, I did. This was his response: “Placing a Christmas tree on the building is an ironworker tradition. It is placed on top of the struc-ture after the structural steel is “topped out.” Topped out means the last piece of structural steel is placed. A tree is placed only if there were no injuries during steel erection. It’s signifies a “job well done.” In the case of Firekeepers, we are keeping the tree alive and will plant it on site as part of the landscaping.” What an achievement by the ironworkers; to complete a job of this magnitude and not have a sin-gle injury. It is indeed a job well done!

October ‘08 Education News By Barry Phillips

Gossett PLLC, the Wightman Associates, I T & Telecom Harwood Engineering, and MRG! Several others have al-ready committed to play or donate at vary-ing levels to be deter-mined. Paula Stuck helped us secure healthy snacks for the golfers and Gil Holliday donated numerous prizes. Ron Osborn, the Golf Pro at Binder Park GC, furnished golf carts, meals, signage, and support at the same price as last year! Kathy Mackety (again) photographed the foursomes and other activities during the event. Laura Spurr has done exceptional work encouraging many of our vendors to become involved with our educational fund-ing! Attendees were treated to dessert from the culinary artistry of RoAnn Beebe-Mohr!

The Education Committee met one more time to deligate

duties and make final preparations before the golf event takes place. Final purchases to the Library Grant were discussed and activated as well. We’ve purchased a computer for the li-brary and David Jones is getting it pro-grammed and ready for use! The Michigan Tribal Education Direc-tors will meet at Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians in Har-bor springs, MI on October 7, 2008.

In Educational Outreach (also on the 7th of October) Athens Area Schools will host 7 other Big Eight Cross Country Running teams here at the Rez’! The 5K race will include Boys, Girls, and Middle School Co-ed teams competing. It will be an opportunity to dis-play our facilities and people to youth & fami-lies from Southern Michigan. Che’ Mig-wetch to residents and

staff who cooperated that day to make it safe for the runners!

Looking back, on September 11th, I had the good fortune to share information with 8th graders at Springfield Middle School. We observed a moment of silence at 8:46 AM to honor the fallen of that fate-ful day and the time when the first hi-jacked plane struck the World Trade Cen-ter. When asked how many remember where they were on that day/moment, only about half re-sponded. Upon re-flection I realized that they were only in the 1st Grade then! A perspective on how life continues was re-alized! As it is impor-tant to remember his-tory, we are also part-nering with Kingman Museum on a 3 Fires display to open in 2009. Bamapii nikanek!

Potawatomi Scramble, Education Committee, Library Grant, Michigan Tribal Education Directors, Education Outreach.

The Potawatomi Scramble, the popular annual fundraiser was September 27, 2008 at Binder Park GC of Battle Creek (same place as last year.) We expanded the number of golfers covered un-der the Hole-in-One in-surance from 75 to 100 golfers. We had 80+ golfers signed up at the opening of the next to last week. We expect a larger more profitable outing this year due to increased vendors and business partners. Standard Of-fice & Printing Supply printed the program this year. Perez APC was a major sponsor along with Fifth/Third Bank, and Sonosky-Chambers, Sachse, En-dreson, & Perry, LLP. Other contributors at press time were: Clark Construction Company, The Rehmann Group, Walker Parking Con-sultants, Battle Creek Health Systems, Oak-lawn Hospital, Dykema

FireKeepers Casino Tribal Membership Employment Update

By Jamie Stuck; Tribal Council Treasurer

As I stated in the September Turtle Press Newsletter, I will be writing articles keeping the NHBP Members up-to-date on Tribal Membership employment on the FireKeepers Casino Project. One of the unique qualities that Clark Construction possesses, is their willingness to provide great attention and detail to Tribal Mem-bership employment on the casino site. In addition to the meet-ings that the Tribal Council attends to re-view the monthly Con-struction Manage-ment Reports, there is a weekly conference call that I participate in with Duane Wixson (Senior Project Man-ager) and Ralph Cayedito (Native American Employment Coordinator) from Clark Construction and with Gary Ritzema of the Skillman Corporation (Project

Coordinator). This meeting as-sists in keeping Tribal Council current on any new developments with NHBP Member-ship employment. Clark Construction also holds a monthly meet-ing for the seventy-seven (77) NHBP Tribal Members and spouses who are registered for employment opportuni-ties with the building trades on the Firekeep-ers Casino Project. This month’s meeting will take place on Octo-ber 16, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Clark Con-struction trailer on the casino site. Currently, we have seventeen (17) Tribal Members and spouses employed with various building trades. An estimated addi-tional six (6) NHBP Members will be em-ployed by the begin-ning of this month. Here is a summary of the Contractors who are presently employ-ing members and

spouses.

It is important that Tribal Member-ship is prepared for whatever opportuni-ties that may be avail-able, whether it is in-volving the construc-tion phase of the ca-sino or if it entails working at the Fire-keepers Casino once it is operating. Here is a heads-up on posi-tions that are pres-ently available. There are immediate

openings for experi-enced Electricians. Applications for Elec-trician Apprentice-ships are being ac-cepted by Hunt Elec-tric/Swan Electric. Classes will start in November. This is a selective apprentice-ship. Tribal Mem-bers will have to take an entrance exam and interview in or-der to be accepted in to the apprentice-

career that can take you into the future be-yond the casino con-struction. If any ques-tions may arise, I can be reached at the Ad-ministration Office on the Pine Creek Reser-vation or on my cell phone. I ask that Tribal Members con-tact me if they apply for any of the appren-ticeships made avail-able. Please refer to the contact informa-tion provided. Good Luck!

Jamie Stuck Tribal Council Treasurer

Mandoka Construc-tion will be onsite as the Contractor for the General Labor by the beginning of this month. The General Labor will consist of one-hundred (100) percent NHBP Tribal Members. Mandoka Construction will start with a General Labor Foreman position and will eventually employ an estimated eight (8) Tribal Members.

I strongly urge

Tribal Members who are eager to work and have backgrounds in any of the areas dis-cussed, to get in con-tact with the correct people, attend the em-ployment meetings, and stay informed. I will work diligently to keep membership in-formed. The more the professionals recog-nize your face and hear your name, the better the odds of be-ing able to start a new

ship program. There are other apprentice-ships for Tribal Mem-bers as well. Schiffer Masonry will be hav-ing an apprenticeship for Mason Tenders. For Tribal Members with experience with pre-cast concrete erection for parking ramps, there will be an apprenticeship made available by the Iron Workers. Please refer to the next page (pg. 7) for the appren-ticeship training with Operating Engineers Local 324. With the interior construction to start soon, John E. Green will provide positions involving plumbing and HVAC sheet metal ducting. Denn Co will have up to an esti-mated sixty (60) posi-tions available for dry-wall hanging and fin-ishing and metal stud framing. According to Clark Construction,

The peak of the flu season is approaching fast. Protect your self from influenza by coming in the NHBP Health Department to get your flu shot

*Vaccination is the best method for preventing the flu* CDC recommends that ALL children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday

get a flu vaccine.

All people, no matter how healthy, are at some risk of developing se‐vere and even fatal influenza infections. Therefore, anyone who

wants to decrease their chance of getting influenza or who may give influenza to a high risk person should get immunized.

The Potawatomi Positive Parents Program is being offered to the Calhoun County tribal population. This program focuses on positive Native American values and strengths. It promotes respect, family unity, and pride in the tra-ditional ways. The Potawatomi Positive Parents Program goals are to pick

up where our ancestors left off in learning more about our traditional ways of life; living by the Noek Meshomesenanek Kenomagewenen (7 Grandfa-

ther Teachings); passing on what we learn to our children, and mending the hoop.

For our first meeting, we plan to discuss the program as a group so you can be a part of the planning by giving your input. Please drop in and let us hear

your ideas and thoughts for the Potawatomi Positive Parents Program.

When? November 1st, 2008 Saturday; 10 a.m.-Noon Where? The Health Building 1474 Mno-Bmadzewen Way Fulton, MI 49052 Who? Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles; anyone who provides care for the children of our community. How to sign up: Please reserve your space by calling Lou Anne Bush at the Health Department; 269-729-4422 or 1-888-729-4422

Current recommendations are to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Many people argue that they do not have that much time to devote to exercise. There are 1440 min-utes in a day. If we devote 30 minutes to physical activity, that leaves 1410 minutes for everything else! According to the (2006 BRFSS-Behavioral Risk Surveillance Survey) Control data collected by the Inter Tribal Council of Michigan for AI/AN (American Indian/ Alaskan Native), 33.0% of Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Members smoke compared to the Michigan average of 22.1%. According to the American Lung Association, “Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among AI/AN, yet of the 217 NA (Native American) languages spoken today, most-if not all, do not include a word for ‘cancer’.” NHBP has a nurse who is certified in smoking cessation and available to help you ‘kick the habit’. If you would like to quit smoking and begin to improve your Heath, call Lisa Droski, R.N. at 888-662-2808. According to the Centers for Disease Control data for AI/AN, 38% of people under age 65 lack health insurance. If you would like to sign up for Contract Health Services, call the Health Depart-ment. Southern office: 888-729-4422; Northern Office: 888-662-2808. The Southern Office offers exercise classes on M-W-F, as well as a new walking class called “Fall into Fitness”, and a nutrition class. The Northern Office offers a wellness class (combination of nutri-tion and exercise) in Grand Haven and will be offering a wellness class at the Wyoming location soon. If you would like more information on any of these classes, please call the Health Depart-ment. The numbers are listed above. Current recommendations are to limit sodium to 2400 mg per day. 1 1/2 cups of canned soup con-tains about 1800 mg. of sodium! It takes 1 hour of water aerobics or 1 hour of walking at 3 1/2 miles per hour to burn the 280 calories in one Snickers bar!
