Technology and Me

A personal timeline of educational technology

Overview

Hey guys! My name is Shawn Trela. I grew up in Kaneohe but started my education off in Manoa in the early 90’s. I graduated from

Kailua High School in 2006 and went straight to UHM in the Fall of 2006. I didn’t know what I wanted to major in until a few years ago and

decided to apply for the College of Ed. I plan on graduating in the Spring of 2011 and hopefully

will be moving to the Mainland to teach middle/high school history.

Education Technology is…

The way educators teach with technology in their classrooms. We are not just teaching our content area, but developing students so they are ready for the “real world”. Technology is

everywhere so we need to teach our students how and when to use technology to their

advantage. We are giving them technological tools, but we are also helping them know the

right and the wrong way to use it.

Web Sites on Ed Tech History

• http://www.newhorizons.org/strategies/technology/beglau.htm This is an older article from 2002 that shows how

education technology starts to build momentum

• http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=About_ISTE This membership allows teachers to continually

learn about technology and how to connect it to education

• http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te400.htm Technology used to create inequality amongst

students. This article shows how technology has changed

Kindergarten Technology

I remember sitting in front of a TV and watching Sesames Street with my classmates. We used

this show to help us learn to count and read.

High School Technology

In High School, technology was all around us. We were constantly using computers to write papers and we used the internet to research and chat with friends. Cell phones became really popular as well. In middle school, teachers didn’t yet need to worry about students texting during class. When I got to high school, that’s when it became a problems. Education Technology is important to me because we need to teach our students when and where to use technology. Students using their cell phone during class is not the best time to use technology.

*I didn’t draw this picture. I found it on the internet…

Technological Experience

To me, getting my first laptop computer was a big step for me. With my laptop, I am able to

keep my notes organized and neat.

Clickers in the Classroom

• Games make learning more interesting

• Healthy competition allows students to challenge themselves as well as others

• Teachers are able to use this instead of paper and pencil tests Different learning style

Page 10: Shawn.trela ppt

My Vision….When I think of classrooms “back in the day”, I think of

one learning style and paper and pencil tests. This doesn’t allow all the different types of students to learn to the best of their abilities. I want my classroom to be full of

technology and I want this technology to help all the different types of learning styles. Equality is something

that I want to strive for.

Challenges for Teaching

• Students using technology in inappropriate ways.

• Students are finding ways to use technology to cheat.

• Technology like TV and computers get in the way of studying and creative learning.

Words of Wisdom

• With great power comes greats responsibility…

- Spiderman

• We must teach our students control and safety when it comes to technology not just how to use it.
