Jewish Earth Day
Ecology, spirituality, and appreciation of nature all come
together in Tu BiShvat, the Jewish “Earth Day.” Occurring on
February 4 this year, it’s a time for planting trees in Israel and
our communities. More than this: It’s an occasion to focus on the
environment’s well-being and our care of the earth.
Judaism’s been concerned with this for thousands of years—since
biblical times. A Jewish legend relates that soon after God created
the world, God acted as a tour guide to Adam and Eve—walking them
through the Garden of Eden and pointing out the beauty and wonder
of all the trees, plants, streams, birds, and animals. Adam and Eve
were duly impressed and appreciative. At the end of the tour, God
said to them with great love and concern, “Please take good care of
the beautiful world I have given you. If you do not care for it
properly, there will be none after you to repair the damage.”
Like Adam and Eve, we are indeed the stewards and caretakers of
the earth, water, and air of our world. Each one of us plays an
important role in the preservation of our planet. The rabbis of the
Talmud went so far as to deduce a mitzvah of bal tashchit from the
Torah; that is, we are not to be wasteful or destructive of natural
resources. The mitzvah of bal tashchit guides us to keep our air
and water as clean and free from pollution as possible, to keep our
forests populated and abundant, and to preserve ecosystems,
protecting the many species of plant and animal life from human
destruction.
Temple Sinai has been unequivocally fulfilling the mitzvah of
bal taschit for over three years now, with the installation of 125
solar panels that significantly reduce our carbon footprint and
energy consumption (up to 50%). It’s part of our ongoing efforts as
a temple community to tend and care for this wondrous world God’s
given us.
Come celebrate the natural world this month and the abundance of
blessings it provides. Please join us on Friday, February 6, at
6:00 p.m. at Temple Sinai to celebrate Tu BiShvat, nature and its
annual renewal with a creative Jewish seder modeled after the
Passover seder. We will eat fruits and nuts that grow in the land
of Israel, share dinner together, and tell stories and sing songs
about nature and Judaism at our “New Year for Trees”—our “Jewish
Earth Day.”

the Cantor’s Voice
by Cantor Steve Hummel
The B’nai Mitzvah Soundtrack
The most essential bar mitzvah training tool has always been the
audio recording. It’s vital that we teach our students to read
Hebrew. Without the ability to actually read Hebrew, our children
would stand on the bimah “guessing” words which they hope they have
memorized. And, integral to the acquisition of any language and the
ability to read is familiarity with the spoken - or sung - word.
Hearing the words said and sung and chanted properly creates a
depth of understanding and a context for the words on the page.
Hearing the words instructs a student how to say the words. We each
learned our first language as babies by using our ears, by hearing
words. Even as adults, our ears are the gateway to language
skills.
When my cousin had his bar mitzvah in 1972, his cantor provided
him with a recording of his Torah portion on vinyl. 33 rpm. In
1982, my cantor recorded my torah portion for me on a cassette
tape. In 1998 I was making cassette tapes for my students. In 2002
I started burning CD’s for my students, but also employed cassette
tapes as an option. By 2008, I was sending mp3’s of prayers to
students’ email addresses through the internet, and still using
cassette tapes for Torah portions. Then came the iPhone, and I
began recording Torah portions on that magical little
device, and texting those audio files to my students. They could
access the files directly on their iPhones and iPod Touches
anywhere they might be. In fact, by 2010, I realized I could no
longer realistically expect a family to go out and purchase an
audio cassette player for their 12 year old. I still have a
cassette player on my office shelf, hoping that it might get used
again someday.
In 2015 I’m still texting Torah portions to my students, but
have discovered a new, innovative way to teach prayers to students
using technology they understand. The theory is simple: Kids love
screens. My prayer lessons are posted online
atwww.showme.com/steve-hummel. TSG b’nai mitzvah students visit
that site daily for interactive, audio-visual tutorials that teach
the melodies and pronunciations of our prayers. The results have
been impressive. During the last 8 months in which I have been
making online tutorials, I have seen marked improvement in our
b’nai mitzvah students.
It’s unclear what technology will come next, but I can hardly
wait to see what it might be.
L’ Shalom,

Measure twice – cut once
When I was in elementary school, my mother taught me how to sew.
It turned out to be an invaluable life lesson. Learning to sew
meant that I could make my own dresses for school. Yes, in those
days girls had to wear dresses. I wanted to have a larger variety
of dresses than my sisters who did not want to take the time to sew
theirs. I was always so anxious to finish my newest creation that I
would invariably put a pocket on upside down or sew a seam inside
out. I would then have to take out my trusty seam ripper and sit
down with the family in front of the TV and begin pulling it apart
to be re-sewn. I honestly didn’t think anyone really noticed that I
was making so many mistakes, until one night my mom turned to me
and said, “You are the most patient sewer I have ever met.”
Nothing could have been further from the truth. It was because
of my impatience that I was making all those mistakes. But I was
stubborn and would never just walk away from a project. Instead, I
learned to take a deep breath, regroup and move forward.
Fast forward XX years. In many ways I’m still that person
wanting to get things done now, but realizing that getting the
finished product done right was more important than getting it done
fast. At the High Holy Day appeal, I announced my dream of
renovating the classrooms this coming summer. That was an
aggressive timeline and I knew that, but I felt the work was long
overdue. As it turns out, there is a lot more than just the
classrooms with work long overdue and the scope of our project has
expanded.
In January, Mike Simon, Mark Fabulich and I presented to the
Board of Directors the proposed scope of work. We had worked with
an outside architect and contractor to take a close look at our
building and equipment to give us a realistic view
of what needed to be done to not only improve the comfort and
aesthetics, but to increase the safety and security for our
children. We concentrated on four key areas of our Temple: The
south hallway and classrooms, the old custodial suite and bathroom,
the parking lot and side entrance, and the north hallway. All these
areas are in desperate need of repair and improvement.
I will not go into all the details in this message. I promise
you will receive detailed information as we move forward. And we
will continue to move forward. The board was very encouraging and
gave us permission to form a committee to determine the feasibility
of raising the funds needed for this capital campaign. This is no
small task, so we spent the next few weeks taking deep breaths and
talking with people in our community with experience in capital
campaigns….thank you Dan and Debbie Heller for all your wisdom,
support and multiple binders from the “Project 5758-Sanctuary
Remodel.” Several of us have also talked with other congregations

Happy new year! Here’s wishing you all have a safe, happy and
healthy 2015. Even though we are getting into February (already!),
I have to share with you how much fun December 24th was at TSG. We
all had a great time eating Chinese food and watching ‘Guardians of
the Galaxy’. It is such a fun movie! Thank you to Marc and Tina
Lowenthal for providing the movie. Thank you to Phillip, Susan and
Andrew Hain for getting some of the best Chinese food ever and
serving it up beautifully. Thank you to Marc Lavender for being a
very patient projectionist. I’m already looking forward, with great
anticipation, to December 24, 2015 to do it all over again; of
course, with a different movie on the ‘marquee’! I’m making a very
strong suggestion here... if you didn’t join us last year I truly
suggest you do so this year. It’s THE place to be!
We have some people in our Sisterhood that we are honoring.
Flo Cohen was nominated (and rightly so) to be the Women’s Forum
Honoree from TSG at the Jewish Federation’s luncheon on March 24.
Flo is also an Area Director for Women of Reform Judaism. I was an
Area Director when I joined Temple Sinai. When my term ended, Flo
was nominated and chosen to be an Area Director. It is a great
honor and a position that Flo is extremely good at. We are very
proud of our Flo. She was a wonderful Sisterhood president and is
now a great Area Director. (And an ongoing mentor to me, as
well!)
As of January 2015 we are proudly 87 women strong! Thank you to
Barak for putting our list together. If you haven’t joined
Sisterhood or you have any questions, call me. Without you, we
truly are one woman short!

Night of the Round Tableby Larry Moskowitz
Despite a light turnout at the Brotherhood meeting on the
evening of January 13, Craig Schweon, Seth Chazanoff, George Lowe
and Larry Moskowitz got a lot accomplished.
The first order of business was the March 15 bowling party at
Jewel City Bowl. We voted unanimously in favor of subsidizing the
congregation’s participation in the event as a goodwill gesture.
Brotherhood will cover $11 or $13 of the $23 cost for each adult
and each child who bowls, respectively. Thus, each adult can enjoy
two hours of bowling, shoe rental and pizza, salad and soft drinks
for $12; each child under 13 for $10. Larry will generate a flyer
for the Scribe and for Barak’s e-blast to promote the event. With
an estimated 20 people attending, the cost to Brotherhood will be
about $260.
The scotch tasting evening planned for March 28 will be at the
Lowe’s residence. Brotherhood members are encouraged to bring their
significant others. This way there will be designated drivers to
get the gentlemen home, and Stephanie will enjoy some female
companionship during the evening. We’re hoping to form a three-man
committee to plan and organize the event.
The idea of a Brotherhood Friday Shabbat is still alive. We
would like to hold it during a service when Rabbi and Cantor are
both present. Roger Baar is willing to design the service but
naturally requires reasonably timely notice. We will consult with
Rabbi Rick to move this project along.
Marc Lavender is handling the Yom HaShoah candles. Seth is in
the process of obtaining a speaker, preferably a survivor, for the
Yom HaShoah program planned for April 12. As a future alternative
to a speaker, we discussed the possibility of showing a documentary
film, such as Claude Lanzmann’s 1985 film, SHOAH. But we’ll stay
with speakers as long as it’s feasible before going to film.
Responding to a request from the Membership Committee to help
pay for food for the new member BBQ planned for February 27,
Brotherhood will match Sisterhood’s contribution, up to $250. Seth
will attend the BBQ and make a brief pitch to the new members to
encourage the men to join Brotherhood.
Responding to a request from the Nominating Committee, George
Lowe volunteered to serve on the committee as a Brotherhood
representative.
Brotherhood is considering getting a group together to attend a
screening on Sunday, February 8 of the film, Above and Beyond. In
1948, a group of
World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War
of Independence. Above and Beyond is a feature-length documentary,
produced by Nancy Spielberg and
directed by Roberta Grossman that chronicles this story. The
film will have a limited engagement at the Laemmle Town Center 5
theater in Encino from February 6 through 12. Showtime information
will be available Tuesday, Feb 3 at 7 pm when tickets go on
sale.
We’re having fun now! Please join us at our next meeting,
Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 pm, when Bill Peters will reign as
Brotherhood president pro-tem.

they did to make their capital campaigns successful. I have also
spent quite a bit of time talking with one of our newer members,
M’liss Cunha, who has helped to keep me focused on the steps we
need to take, so I don’t have to rip out the seam and start
again.
With the expert help of Marty Sharkey, Phillip Hain and Matt
Brownstein, we are in the process of putting together our campaign
materials. As that progresses, we will begin our strategy for
rolling the project out to the congregation. Additional
committees will be formed. We will need people to work on
design, construction, budget and finance, grants, fundraising,
donor recognition, communications and marketing. It is my goal that
every member of our congregation becomes actively involved in some
aspect of improving our synagogue.
We all have talents and opinions we can bring to help in this

were able to offer a bit more than last year in terms of
entertainment. We had a non-alcoholic bar to add to the theme of
the evening as well as GTY
waiters for each table. We heard from a few GTY members about
their experiences and why the youth group is so important to them.
We sold GTY merchandise as well as 50/50 raffle tickets. A big

What's Nu -2?Sinai Seniors Tour of LA MOTH
by Ilena Blicker
On a beautiful Sunday morning, January 18, 21 Temple Sinai
members and friends began a tour of the LA Museum of the Holocaust.
Lest you think they were all seniors, quite a few were below that
age group and one young man definitely lowered the median age. At 6
months old, he quietly listened and looked at our docent, while
being held by his father. We were doubly delighted to learn that
our docent was Eric Roberts, father of Temple member Suzanne
Roberts. Hearing his story of how his family left Germany and what
they had to go through to do so was captivating. Luckily his family
was able
to leave prior to the mass Jewish round ups by the Nazis. After
the actual tour we were privileged to hear a talk by Holocaust
survivor, Bob Geminder.
Some of you may remember him as he spoke to us at our Yom
HaShoah service many years ago. His tale of living through the
Shoah was amazing. We all wonder if we could have acted with as
much courage as his mother did in those circumstances. No question,
he, his mother and brother had a guardian angel with them.
Even though many of us were familiar with the events leading to
the rise of Nazism and the increasing anti-Semitic laws,
demonstration, looting and worse, seeing them in the context of a
well laid out exhibit brought it to the forefront. The statistics
of the Jewish ghettos and small towns that were decimated by the
onslaught of the German Army and particularly the SS along with
pictures of some the inhabitants struck us in a way that became
more personal. For some in the group we saw the pictures of the
towns in those areas that our own families had lived in before this
unfathomable disaster.
The numbers remain staggering, 6 million Jews as well as 5
million others considered non-essential, the physically or mentally
handicapped, Roma (Gypsy),
homosexuals and other minorities that did not fit into the Nazi
ideal. One room was dedicated to those who in spite of the sword of
death that hung over them and their families if they helped did all
that they could to save Jewish lives.
One thing that was clearly evident that morning was the large
number of several groups who were not Jewish touring the Museum. We
hope that this Museum exhibit has imparted to them that “Never
Again” is something that everyone, not just Jews, needs to take to
heart. To remember that we are all betzelem Elohim, in the image of
God.
Journey Through the Bible - Session III
Was Saul, the reluctant first king of Israel, treated unfairly
by Samuel? Was God being too cruel when he commanded Saul, through
Samuel, to
attack the Amalekites and kill every man, woman, child and
animal? Did Samuel really speak for God?
These and other provocative questions were raised and discussed
during Rabbi Rick’s third Journey Through the Bible session held
Sunday, January
11. We learned how Saul disappointed God and lost favor with Him
because he did not exterminate all the Amalekite livestock. To make
matters worse, Saul allowed Amalekite King Agog to live, thereby
forcing Samuel to kill Agog himself. Strong stuff.
We only briefly met David but will delve more deeply into his
story and Saul’s continuing tragic downfall when Rabbi Rick’s next
Journey Through the Bible session meets Sunday, February 8 at 10:00
am. It promises to be an fascinating hour and a half as we explore
more of this original, biblical “Game of Thrones.”

Sisterhood Shabbat Serviceuuy vhshc ck ,nfj vat kfu
“And all the skilled women spun with their own hands” - on
Friday, March 13 we will read these words from Vayakel during a
very special Sisterhood Shabbat service. This is one of the Torah
portions describing the donations for the Tabernacle and features
the contributions of the women. In ancient Israel, the women were
skilled in many things, midwives, musicians and most importantly
for this parashah in making textiles, cloths and hangings. After
the service, which has been specially written for this Shabbat,
there will be an exhibit of crafts and art work with a Jewish theme
that have been made by women in our Sisterhood.
If you are a woman member of Sisterhood (we do have some men
whoare members) and have made quilts or tallit, paintings or paper
cuttingsamong other arts and crafts that in some way reflect a
Jewish theme andwould like to be part of this exhibit, please
contact Ilena Blicker [email protected]. Please send a photo
of what you will exhibitand approximate size so that we can plan on
how to display it.
