DESTINATION GUIDE

ISTANBULIstanbul sits on the Bosphorus Strait, whereEurope and Asia meet. Once the capital ofboth the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, thecity is home to landmarks of astoundingbeauty such as Topkapi Palace, the BlueMosque and the Grand Bazaar.

Overview

Istanbul is such a diverse city that it's almost impossible to splitit up into definable districts. The only real distinction that can bemade is between the European and Asian sides, which areseparated by the Bosphorus Strait. Stretching from the BlackSea, straddling across the Bosphorus, touching the Sea ofMarmara, Istanbul, with an estimated population of between10-13 million, has become a city of unlimited scope.

Sultanahmet

Most people who come to Istanbul land feet first inSultanahmet. This peninsula (known as Sarayburnu) juts outinto the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara.Rich in history, it's a natural magnet to millions of tourists everyyear. The home of Topkapi Serayi (Topkapi Palace), Ayasofya(Hagia Sophia), the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque),Yerebatan Serayi (Yerebetan Basilica Cistern), and the AtMeydani(Hippodrome), Sultanahmet is filled to the brim withhotels, restaurants, cafes, bars, rug stores and cheesy souvenirshops, as well as a plethora of fascinating museums, mosques, markets and historical sites. The main drag, Divan Yolu, is theheartbeat of the area, and there are hundreds of tiny backstreets and alleyways to explore the history of the old city. Thelabyrinthine Kapaliarsi (Grand Bazaar /Covered Bazaar) nearBeyazit University is also on this street. Sultanahmet can be alittle intimidating as it truly caters to only tourists. (Read: you'llhave to learn quickly not to respond to "Hey! Are youAmerican/English /German /Spanish/Italian /French?") Oneimpressive thing about Sultanahmet is that the businessmen

DESTINATION GUIDE

ISTANBULeach seem to speak every major European language, so if yourTurkish isn't up to par, don't fret.Eminonu

Situated right on the waterfront on the Golden Horn, Eminonuis the end of the tramline. It is generally buzzing with activityduring the day, with street peddlers selling you things younever even knew you wanted. The vast Misir arsi (EgyptianSpice Bazaar) is the main feature of Eminonu Square andMimar Sinan's Yeni Camii (New Mosque) is a familiar landmarkwith its minarets standing tall above the general chaos. Ferriesto the Asian side and the Princes Islands leave from the hugedocks lining the shore, where you can stop by and have abalikekmek (fresh fish sandwich) while you wait for your vessel. The Sirkeci Train Station is also here: all trains to and fromEurope begin and end their journeys here.

Beyoglu / Taksim

A veritable symphony of Occident and Orient, Beyoglu is thepulsating heartbeat of Istanbul's day and nightlife. IstiklalCaddesi -- a paved thoroughfare perpetually swarming withIstanbul's colorful hoi polloi -- is at the hub of the metropoliswhile a maze of narrow winding lanes filled with funky cafés,soulful bars, continental restaurants, historic cinemas, prominent theaters and exclusive shops shoot off in alldirections around it. Taksim Square, featuring the impressiveMonument to the Republic, leads the way into Beyoglu'sbohemian open-air museum, past the Greek Orthodox AyaTriade Church and the French Consulate. A quaint old tramwaycarries passengers past the Rumeli Han, iek Pasaji, Cite dePera, Atlas Pasaji, Galatasaray Lisesi, and several elegantconsulates. Every year the International Istanbul Film Festival,International Istanbul Music Festival, International IstanbulTheater Festival and the International Istanbul Jazz Festival areheld here and in nearby districts. Beyoglu, which has been thetraditional home of Istanbul's gay community, hosts variousother annual events, including the Bosphorus Festival, RoxyMusic Days, Aksanat Jazz Festival and the Blues Festival.

Tunel

DESTINATION GUIDE

This is undoubtedly Istanbul's Bohemian Quarter, which not solong ago was perceived as a bad part of town, with its darkdeserted streets and creepy abandoned buildings. However, the area has undergone tremendous development in recentyears. Tiny cafes, live music venues, and open-air restaurantsand bars now quietly coexist with art galleries, antiquebookshops and music stores.

Karakoy

Around the first century BC, there was a tiny village situated onthe mini peninsula of the Golden Horn where the modernsuburb of Karakoy stands today. These days, Karakoy is abustling port with a lively fish market, a hectic ferry terminal anda shady nightlife; an intriguing landscape at the mouth of theGolden Horn. Scores of locals fish from the Galata Bridge andan array of vendors peddle all kinds of goods along thesidewalks. A vast underground marketplace where you can buyelectrical appliances and guns, among other things, providesnot-so-safe passage under the busy road to the entrance ofTunel. Up the hill is Bankalar Caddesi, an historical area filledwith banks, art galleries and do-it-yourself stores. All visitinginternational cruise ships dock in Karakoy.

Galata

The Genoese-built Galata Tower is the most central point here. The renowned Turkish film Istanbul Beneath My Wings tells thestory of Hazarfen elebi, who flew from this tower with ahome-made pair of wings. The main street, Galip DedeCaddesi, is a hub of activity with shops selling musicalinstruments and antique books, and you'll also find a good doseof tiny local restaurants. The Whirling Dervishes have a homehere at the Galata Mevlevihanesi (Dervish Lodge); the GoetheInstitute provides locals with a good dose of culture and art;and there are countless mosques, churches and synagogueshidden away in obscure side streets.

DESTINATION GUIDE

ISTANBULof the stretch of land between Eminonu and Ayvansaray, up asfar as Eyup. The Selimiye Mosque, the Fethiye Mosque and St.Steven's Church grace the shoreline while the Kariye Muzesi(Chora Church) and Mihrimah Mosque are further inland. Theold city walls start at Ayvansaray and snake overland toYedikapi.

Besiktas and Ortakoy

Besiktas -- which is actually dismally devoid of places to helpyou paint the town red -- is at the center of the three-way forkthat leads up the hill to Levent. Ortakoy, on the other hand, is abustling suburb on the waterfront. Bubbling over with cafés,bars, restaurants and tea houses, this area is a popularweekend hangout for locals. Ortakoy's back streets are buzzingwith handicraft stalls filled with trinkets and souvenirs onsummer weekends. This part of town is renowned for itsmosque, church and synagogue within close quarters of oneanother. The Bosphorus Bridge spans the waterway overhead.

Bosphorus: Arnavutkoy to Sariyer

The Bosphorus shore on the European side is lined withOttoman-style mansions, high society hangouts and fishrestaurants. There is only one main road and it follows theshoreline all the way to Zekariyekoy, a popular weekendgetaway for the citybound.

Sea of Marmara Coast: Kumkapi to Yedikule

Kumkapi is a distinctly touristy area filled with over-priced fishrestaurants and not much else besides views of the sea. Thecoast road heads out toward the airport past the old city wallsand Yedikule Fortress.

Asian Side & Bosphorus: Kadikoy to Anadolu Hisari

Kadikoy is a quieter version of Beyoglu with a more subduedatmosphere. The tiny cobbled lanes are filled with restaurants, cafés, bars, cinemas and shops, but most importantly,

residents! The Asian side of town is where most Istanbuliteslive; you'll have a harder time with no Turkish language skillshere, but it's worth it to pop over on the ferry and experience amore relaxed way of life. The coast road snakes past Uskudar,a pretty suburb with plenty of fine examples of Mimar Sinan'swork, including the Mihrimah Sultan and Semsi Pasa Mosques.Selimiye Barracks (where Florence Nightingale worked duringthe Crimean War) is up on the hill. Heading toward AnadoluHisari, the road winds along the shoreline (which is less built upthan that of the European side). There are plenty of parks andtrees, outdoor cafés and restaurants and a string of historicalbuildings to explore including Beylerbeyi Palace, KuleliMosque, Kuleli Naval Officer's Training School, Kuuksu Parkand Kiosk and Anadolu Hisari.

Princes Islands

There are four islands in the Sea of Marmara that attractcrowds escaping the summer heat: Buyukada, Heybeliada,Kinaliada and Burgazada. Ferries leave from Sirkeci, Kadikoyand Bostanci regularly. There are no cars on the islands -- thetransport here is limited to horse-drawn carriages. Each islandoffers plenty of places to eat and sleep, and there are Greekmonasteries atop the hills of Buyukada and Heybeliada.

Harbiye-Nisantasi-Sisli-Mecidiyekoy-Levent

The Military Museum in Harbiye is a good landmark from whichto begin exploring Istanbul's business life. Nisantasi is thecentral shopping district, while Sisli is strictly a business districtthat goes all the way to Levent and beyond to Maslak. There isnow an underground metro linking Taksim with Fourth Levent.

DESTINATION GUIDE

CAPPADOCIACappadocia is the name given to thetriangle-shaped region between Nevsehir,Nigde, and Aksaray, in central Turkey. Bestknown for churches carved from rocks byearly monks and hermits and undergroundcities.

Overview

The interesting formations of tuff called "Fairy Chimneys" haveactually been formed by the effects of wind and floor waterspouring off the surrounding hills and mountains into the valleyfloors. The flood waters found their own paths through thesteep gorges, causing deep cracks and breakages in the hardstone. The softer erodable material underneath has beengradually swept away, resulting in conical formations protectedby basalt caps.

Fairy chimney houses are located in Göreme, a town inCappadocia. Its origin dates back from the Roman period, carved in rock, it represents an amazing site with rock-hewnchurches and chapels, along with remains of the undergroundcities. Thanks to its unique geological formations andarchaeological sites, it was designated a World Heritage Siteby UNESCO in 1985.
