2 A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

The world is changing incredibly fast. The changes that have occurred over the past few decades have had a greater influence on the world than those that happened over the preceding few centuries. Knowledge and the constant search for new ways to apply it are among the key factors of change. All of this is perceived as entrepreneurship, which we more often tend to view as the ability to create a better world and assume personal responsibility.

At our university, we interpret entrepreneurship as the 3 I’s: idea, initiative and implementation. Ideas are impossible without creativity, initiative is impossible without responsibility, and implementation is impossible without knowledge. Everyone has a number of ideas and projects in mind, but few take the initiative to turn them into products that are beneficial for all humanity.

With this report we would like share our progress on the implementation of the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education in our institution. We will report on progress to all our stakeholders and exchange effective practices related to these principles with other academic institutions. We understand that our own organisational practices should serve as an example of the values and attitudes we convey to our students.

ISM President dr. Nerijus Pačėsa

The University sees its alumni as ISM certified ambassadors. We realise that their professional value depends on the reputation of ISM, while their reputation, in turn, adds value to ISM.

By 2011 ISM had 1,890 alumni. This is a whole

new generation of leaders who have made a significant impact on the development of Lithuanian businesses. Initiative, creative and striving for success – ISM alumni are among the most wanted employees and top executives.

AN ISM GENERATION OF BUSINESS LEADERS

JŪRATĖ DACIENĖ head of the department of hr development at danske Bankas, lithuania

danske Bankas closely cooperates with iSm university of management and economics because we believe that this institution has some of the most talented and motivated students who, in addition to the theoretical knowledge, receive the latest information about today’s business. after meeting iSm’s students, you get the impression that they are encouraged to be interested in today’s economic news of the country and the world, which enables them to relate theory and practice more easily and develop a better understanding of the current social and business environments.

thus, as iSm’s social partners, we hope to be able to provide a fully-fledged contribution to the education of its students and to win the name of their potential and desired employer, since we want iSm alumni to join our team.

MINDAUGAS SINKEVIČIUS mayor of Jonava, mSc alumnus class 2009, Phd candidate, iSm

i can state confidently that iSm is an innovative university that reacts to market needs and offers study programmes complying with these needs. it is of key importance that here no one ever tries to convince you that answers exist to all problems encountered in the academic or business world. iSm takes into account the dynamic nature of today’s environment and understands that an answer to a business or academic problem that is correct today may prove totally wrong in a very short period of time. this is why iSm encourages students to analyse and think rather than look for answers in the past.

6 CURRICULUM

iSm holds a view that understanding business ethics principles is vital for every student – a future business leader.

CSR within study programmesISM holds a view that understanding of business

ethics principles is vital for everyone. Thus, subject of Business Ethics is offered in Management, Finance, and International Business and Communication programmes as a core course. Students of Economics programme are offered Business Ethics as an elective. The main objective of CSR course is to equip students with the necessary theoretical tools for analysing common and relevant cases of ethics in a global business environment. The course covers a number of topics arising in business — shareholder participation, global inequality in labour remuneration, pollution, and so forth—and try to come to rational conclusions concerning the moral issues we encounter. Each year approx. 200 Bachelor students take this course.

In spring 2012, students who took Business Ethics course received an anti-corruption training which was organized by ISM and Transparency International - Section Lithuania. Each student was invited to attend a 4 hours long training

which was provided by lecturers of Transparency International. The workshop aimed to show students the consequences and costs or bribery, nepotism and corruption to society. Students taking part on both days of the events received a certificate which is signed by the lecturer and the president of Transparency International Section Lithuania.

In 2010-2011, the elective course of Social entrepreneurship and innovation was twice offered for undergraduate students of Economics and Politics and International Business and Communication. Social innovation is defined as a novel solution to a social problem that is more effective, efficient, and sustainable and for which the value created accrues primarily to society as a whole rather than private individuals. Businesses are overtaking responsibilities to combat inequality, economic hardships or lack of resources in both developing and developed countries. Traditional boundaries between public sector, private business and civil society are blurred, since close cooperation of these parties supported by social innovations and entrepreneurship can become major drivers of societal changes (the best known example is Mr. Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, who received Nobel Peace prize in 2006 for developing a banking system to support small local entrepreneurs). The course was a great chance for students to understand the opportunities, causes and effects of social action, and to get knowledge how to manage it.

Since in current business environment the role of leader in establishing moral values and principles of behaviour became vital, ISM offers a course on Leadership on undergraduate level for Management and International Business and Communication programmes. Fundamental understanding of leadership models, leadership practice and necessary prerequisites for leadership models is the major focus throughout the course.

Page 7: Sharing Information on Progress

7AN ISM GENERATION OF BUSINESS LEADERS

it is worth highlighting that activities of socially responsible companies attract more and more students’ attention both as places of internship, and as questions for academic research.

In 2011, ISM Bachelor student Marija Pileckytė had an internship at a social entrepreneurship company „Zameen Organic“ in India. The company promotes sustainable development of Indian cotton farmers. The student also wrote a Bachelor thesis „Relationship Marketing Strategy Formation for Social Entrepreneurship Company “Zameen Organic”.

8 CURRICULUM

On a graduate level, subject of Corporate Business Responsibility is offered as a core course in International Marketing and Management programme. The main aim of the course is to prepare the students to make well-prepared moral choices in the complex and realistic business context and everyday business activities as well as familiarise them with the main issues of Corporate Responsibility and its implementation in business practice and corporate governance. The course introduces business ethics as a multidisciplinary academic field through analysing moral conflict situations and explores the society’s expectations towards corporate social responsibility. It discusses the various reasons why corporations chose to emphasize CSR (morality, reputation management, profit maximization, etc.). Through lectures, class discussions and practical case examples, the course gives an opportunity for the students to learn what kind of trade-offs the enterprises will have to make in order to combine their ‘citizenship’ roles and their immediate commercial concerns. It also helps to develop the students’ skills in transforming these trade-offs into opportunities for the corporation and society.

Several Master theses related to ethical behaviours and corporate social activities were written in Master of Science programmes 2010-2012:

courses on Business ethics, corporate Business responsibility, Social entrepreneurship and leadership are part of undergraduate and graduate programmes. the courses are reviewed and updated annually.

9BEYOND THE CURRICULUM

ISM has established the Committee on Ethics, which not only copes with occasional cases of unethical behaviour analysis and, if necessary, penalties, but also plays an active preventive role of unethical behaviour. The head of the Committee, assoc. prof. dr. Maik Huettinger, who is also a lecturer of Business Ethics courses, takes care to spread the moral norms and values of ethical behaviour not only within curriculum, but also in informal or formal meetings with students and staff.

Step further: The Committee on Ethics (ISM) is cooperating with Transparency International Section Lithuania in order to improve and discuss issues of transparency and ethical behaviour at ISM. Two meetings will be organized in cooperation with Transparency International in summer 2012: one with the members of the committee on Ethics, the second with faculty members.

educational policies. The core content of the programme

consists of main spheres of leadership expression: understanding mission of public sector, leadership and management in schools as in learning organisations, leadership in education, leadership in teachers’ and parents’ communities and personal development and maturity.

The purpose of the programme is to prepare highly qualified professional managers capable to create and implement educational mission in various types of educational institutions, to achieve successful learning and educational process and its outcomes for all types of students and communities.

This master programme is innovative in its holistic approach to educational leadership. I think ISM is one of the most progressive universities in Lithuania and I am very lucky to be slightly involved with the Business Council. It is very rewarding to see how your experience can translate into useful knowledge and awareness about many different things and help new students build their lives, business.

ilja laurs, member of the iSm Business council, is the founder of getJar, the world’s largest open mobile application store. ilja has been nominated ‘european manager of the Year 2011’ by the european Business Press association, ‘25 european tech leaders’ by the wall Street Journal, ‘10 Start-ups that will change Your life’ by time magazine,‘technology Pioneer 2011’ by the world economic forum.

ISM started and is involved in several projects to increase accessibility of private education:

■ Annual ISM Excellent 100 campaign to provide an opportunity for the most talented Lithuanian students to study for free;

■ EU funded project “Humanities and Social Sciences training development to promote economic development”;

■ Scholarships for the students from the CIS area.

ISM Excellent 100 Partnership Programme

In 2011 the University launched an ISM Excellent 100 Partnership Programme, inviting companies to establish scholarships for the 100 best students of social sciences. By establishing scholarships companies not only contribute to stopping brain-drain to foreign countries, but also establish mutually beneficial relations with students: knowing the best students, they will be able to offer them internships or permanent jobs on graduation.

The ISM Excellent 100 Partnership Programme is based on financing the difference between the tuition fee charged by the University and the funding allocated by the state. For the past few years this difference has been financed for some of the best students by the University itself, and from now on a larger number of students will be able to study completely free of charge.

financial economic experts for Lithuanian and EU labour market. Within the scope of this project, 5 students of Financial Economics and 12 students of International Marketing and Management study on a graduate level as fully project-funded students.

Having regard to the fact that high quality graduate studies are hardly affordable to some potential students, ISM joined the EU funded project

“humanities and Social Sciences training development to promote economic development”in autumn 2011. The project, which is run in collaboration with 6 Lithuanian higher education institutions, seeks to update the International Marketing and Management and Financial Economics Master degree programmes and to develop better international management and

additional scholarships to study free of charge or with significant discount on undergraduate and graduate levels were offered for applicants from ciS countries. high level candidates from Byelorussia and russia now have an opportunity to get european level of graduate education and to either disseminate their knowledge in home countries, where high level economists and managers would consolidate economic and business growth, or to establish their future in lithuania.

iSm continues development of regional business cases

ISM continues coordinating the Leonardo da Vinci transfer of innovation project - “Transfer of experiential and innovative teaching methods for business education“. The project started in 2008 with an aim to embed case teaching method within Polish, Lithuanian, as well as other partner countries business education through enhancing trainers’ competencies to write and teach using case method and to develop Lithuanian and Polish case studies, based on the real companies‘ practices and experience.

Ten case studies have been developed during the Project. Although majority of cases focus on strategic management and Human Resource Management topics, one case study is dedicated solely to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The case study presents a number of CSR initiatives carried out by Kraft Food Lietuva towards its employees, customers and society at large. Looking at CSR from a multiple stakeholder perspective, the case provokes a discussion of organisational motives for engaging in CSR and CSR return on investment.

ISM University carried out the pilot trainings using the developed case studies and this method again proved to be in high demand for modern management education.

BMRA 2011 -“Customer as Change Driving Force“

BMRA2011 Conference mainly focused on organizational change; however, the issues of CSR and sustainability were also presented and discussed during the conference:

■ “CSR integrated balanced scorecard: fostering community values-based change” presented by Rita Vilkė (Lithuania).

■ “Do disadvantaged groups of society make a relevant internal customer? Organisational response to the needs of elder and disabled employees” presented by Ilona Bučiūnienė, Rūta Kazlauskaitė, and Vida Škudienė (Lithuania).

the purpose of spreading the idea of entrepreneur-ship is to bring together different stakeholders – govern-ment, experts, academia, businesses, and youth to share knowledge, experience, good practices, and to raise awareness that entrepreneurship is a life-long learning experience, which starts at school level and continues into further education.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP: SPREADING THE WORD

Page 18: Sharing Information on Progress

18 ENTREPRENEURSHIP: SPREADING THE WORD

Sharing Knowledge ISM has achieved growing recognition among high school pupils

and their teachers in Lithuania through the considerable number of educational programmes promoting social entrepreneurship and business education in general. The most recent example is ISM University for teachers and high school students organised free of charge. The event was organised for the second time in 2011 attracting more than 1,000 participants to a series of lectures on leadership, creativity, management and economics.

The project is focused on the idea that entrepreneurship education should not be limited to teaching it as a single subject. Instead, it should be integrated into the whole curriculum. To unleash and foster the entrepreneurship spirit, high school teachers should be equipped with interactive, creative methods of teaching.

Global Entrepreneurship Week – Being a Part of the Global Movement

Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is the world’s largest celebration of innovators and job creators who launch start-ups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. During one week each November, GEW inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators.

ISM is the national host of GEW in Lithuania. It has become the tradition for GEW Lithuania to involve the following groups: schools, universities, youth organisations, government institutions, and business.

The 4th GEW, 2011: ■ Vilnius Mayor Artūras Zuokas and Ilja Laurs, the founder of GetJar,

the world’s largest open mobile application store, expressed their support for promoting entrepreneurship in Lithuania

■ 12 partners from governmental institutions, business and academia

■ More than 2000 activities and events

■ Over 13,000 people from schools, universities and business were involved or participated

Advocating Socially Responsible Entrepreneurship

In 2011 ISM joined a new professional volunteer work project ‘Who Needs It?!’ aimed at introducing business experiences into the classroom. This will not only help pupils in choosing their professional career path but also inspire them to learn and be creative.

It is expected that during the first 4 years of the project 95% of schools will take part in it and 3,000 meetings with pupils will be held as planned. The professional volunteer work project will involve 2,000 professionals from various businesses.

ISM advises and helps businessmen in the preparation of study materials, and also encourages its community to become volunteers and share their experience. Thus almost 20 ISM employees will travel around Lithuania and give lectures for school students in their subject areas.

Other Social Projects: ■ Joint initiative by Lithuanian Forum for the Disabled and ISM to

boost the study possibilities for disabled people

■ Participation in the Lithuanian Junior Achievement programme ‘Young Colleague’

■ Participation of employees and students in the traditional initiative (Let’s Do It) for tidying up the environment

■ A public lecture by Jonathan Robinson co-founder of The Hub (UK) on social entrepreneurship to encourage people to start social business. An open lecture was organised together with the British Council.

■ Fionn Dobbin’s lecture about social business and its creation with case practices. The lecturer shared his experience establishing socially responsible company “MAMMU”.

■ A lecture with an economist Aušra Maldeikienė on the concept of social business.

■ Ambassadors of social entrepreneurship shared their experience with students on an open conference on the topic.

■ The competition for students to develop Social Business plans.

ISM actively cooperates with and supports numerous youth and not for profit organizations, such as Junior Achievement, Junior Chamber International, AIESEC and many others, by implementing common projects or simply by sponsoring events (providing speakers, facilities etc.).

As an outcome of successful partnership, ISM started a larger project with AIESEC by opening AIESEC’s office on ISM premises and implementing project related to promoting socially responsible business and entrepreneurship.

2010-2012 events’ cycle “Challenge: Social Entrepreneurship” covered a series of public lectures, a conference on Social Entrepreneurship and competition for students to develop social business plans:
