An artwork with street kids
J : I get the impression you had a lot of fun doing this.
B: When you get a degree of recognition or success, the fun goes out of it. All of our creativity begins when we are children and it’s the fun which drives us, it’s the excitement and the adventure that drives you towards it - certainly what I have been getting out of it is regaining that spontaneity. This project has taken us six weeks. We started by going to India, which was our response to the negative things that were going on with Indian students in Australia. It was kind of a violent situation and we just went there to do an artwork with street kids so some of that creative adventure has come back into it.
To condense the narrative of the story into a singular image
J : You’ve used the word “creative adventure”, and I get the impression from the way you talk and also from glancing at your bios that both of you are very open to ideas and to getting involved in these kinds of creative projects and creative adventures.
B: I go beyond open. I am actively seeking them. One thing that’s kind of boring is the perceived borders between art forms. When you make a film, it’s a vision thing; there’s a narrative issue, you’re telling a story. One of the great privileges is to collaborate with artists from every form – the plastic arts, the performance arts, the literary arts, and music. Those collaborations are all about working with people who are really grand and great at what they do. One

called The Creek, 1977. In the words of the artists,
the work is ‘a child’s memory of no consequence,

of the really interesting things between arts is this journey, this piece called The Creek. It’s a simple child’s memory, and it comes from my own experience. When you go and see the artwork you’ll see photographs from my own history, growing up on a small gas station. For others it’s an inconsequential memory, but Vincent and I have gone through a process in which we take inspiration from Caravaggio, where someone who is doing a religious painting has to condense the narrative of the story into a singular image. This exercise has been an exciting and fruitful discipline that I’ve had to engage in.
Our childhood memories are our great religious experiences
J : The singular image that you refer to, I can see a print of it now. There are religious resonances and this again relates to what you were saying about Caravaggio that suggests the crucifixion, does it not?
B: Well, there’s a mechanical idea that we pursue, and that scene you are looking at in front of you is a car accident that happened in Mid-North Coast in 1977 by a gas station where there are three children who live on that gas station. Those elements are realities from my life and the rest of it is a mythology, but the idea of referring very directly to the paintings of Caravaggio and religious imagery is to amplify this idea that might be just a happening of no consequence to anyone else or to you, Jonathan, to our listeners, or to anybody. Our childhood memories are our great religious experiences. The spiritual power of images that we recall from childhood is impossible to compete with. So to shine that up or amplify that, we’ve overtly quoted the style of Caravaggio and those religious paintings of the period, which is something I’d like to take on into the visual language of the film. So I guess that’s a long way of saying ‘yes’.
J : I’m just fascinated by the way you explore the world of childhood. You’re obviously inspired by childhood. You were talking earlier about the energetic creativity and spontaneity you get in childhood and the almost religious significance that is associated with memory, so I can see this is partly autobiographical. I’m looking at this word ‘heightened’, which I see a lot. What is the significance of this word when you talk of ‘heightened’ paintings, ‘heightened’ cinema?
B: That’s a good question because we often bandy it around and we often see it and people talk about it. But my definition is: something that is amplified is not naturalistic, and yet is somehow more real. And what I mean is that you’re amplifying an emotion. Things are greater, more perfect, more beautiful than they probably were, and it’s a big lie, but you’re engaging in a big lie to tell a much more important truth, a universal truth. When this is done very well, things seem exquisite and extraordinary, but they’re somehow very real as well, and to me, that’s what the use of heightened things is – you pick it out from ordinary life. A simple definition is – you put a frame around anything and by the very nature of framing it, you are heightening it from its background.
J: This effect of amplification, do you think people perceive that as one of the hallmarks of your film directing style?
B: Yeah, I grew up in many different styles and I was usually influenced by psychological naturalism. I reach back to childhood, to my love of the cinema from childhood – we had a little movie house and in the memories of childhood, they are heightened. By the very nature of being from a child’s perspective, they’re heightened.

We began our work nearly a quarter century ago, when I arrived in Hong Kong proposing to create in this much-maligned cultural wasteland, a youth orchestra second to none that would celebrate the exceptional talent not only of Hong Kong’s finest young musicians but also those from around the region.
Where have the AYO alumni gone?
Twenty years on now, and what an impact AYO has had. Such is the Orchestra’s reputation that some 20,000 to 30,000 musicians have auditioned over these 20 years for the 100 highly-prized places annually open in AYO. AYO alumni are now professionals in orchestras around the globe. Here at home they hold principal chairs in the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Hong Kong Sinfonietta,
(from left): Richard Pontzious, Isaiah Jackson and Yehudi Menuhin at an AYO rehearsal (1990)
It was an insane notion, and the cacophony of naysayers was deafening. The Hong Kong government was not about to help out – and has not, consistently for 20 years. Two decades ago the Mainland wasn’t talking to Taiwan; Vietnam and the Mainland were sorting out a border dispute, guns blazing and exit permits and visas were a tough call and far from guaranteed for Mainlanders wanting to come to Hong Kong, Vietnamese refugees washing up on our shores were being held in camps in the New Territories, the economy was tanking, and the newly-opened Academy for Performing Arts was just getting its sea legs. My timing was impeccable.
Yehudi Menuhin – his name was gold
But Hong Kong being Hong Kong, the idea for an Asian Youth Orchestra quickly took root and won friends. One meeting led to another and some rather influential people began to see that this might work. The idea of an Asian Youth Orchestra that would unite the region caught the imagination of one very distinguished former child prodigy, the late violinist, conductor and humanitarian Yehudi Menuhin, and his name was gold.
With Yehudi Menuhin and Isaiah Jackson sharing conducting responsibilities, AYO’s debut in August 1990 was such a phenomenal success that it propelled the Orchestra, found what would become a loyal audience (thought to be impossible in the heat of summer), and brought the Hong Kong public and corporate community coming together in ways unimagined.

RTHK Quartet, the Disneyland Band, and in various chamber music ensembles. They have also become distinguished teachers and conductors; all this a very rich dividend paid on the community’s investment.
Success has not always come easily. The arts are never easy – to manage, to fund, to nurture, or to frame in a way that the public can admire and challenge with respect. But looking back, the hard knocks and rough patches rarely come to mind. Remembering a government staffer calling to ask what a conductor does in an orchestra continues to be good for a laugh. But what we remember most is that Hong Kong has been incredibly generous to the Asian Youth Orchestra, to individual musicians, to our staff, to me personally, and to the great artists who have called Hong Kong home during our three-week Rehearsal Camp and concerts in the Cultural Centre. It’s humbling.
welcoming and supportive home to AYO, and AYO has given Hong Kong an institution the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in Asia. Not in Japan. Not in Singapore. Not in Korea. Not on the Mainland. Who would have thought that it takes a Hong Kong to make an AYO?
Homecoming concert
As we take stock in this, our 20th anniversary year, we hope that friends old and new will celebrate with us and come hear our performances. Of course we’ll play our annual concerts in the Cultural Centre Concert Hall, this year on August 11th and 12th. But for a special 20th-anniversary celebration we’ve invited our alumni to come back to Hong Kong – as many as possible – for a concert on 13 August that should be great fun. We expect some 200 or 300 former AYOers to take part in a programme from our first year – Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique. This concert will be played in the Hong Kong Coliseum. Both James Judd and I will conduct this 20th anniversary Alumni Orchestra Concert at the Coliseum on 13 August.
Back to our regular concerts, I shall be conducting on 11 August when our all-Richard Strauss programme will include Don Quixote (with superb cellist Alban Gerhardt), Don Juan and the Rosenkavalier Suite. Radio 4 will broadcast this concert on 13 August with a repeat on 18 August.
AYO principal conductor James Judd will conduct on 12 August, when his programme will include Schumann’s Cello Concerto, with Alban Gerhardt returning as soloist, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Radio 4 will broadcast this concert on 14 August with a repeat on 19 August.
Artist-faculty chamber recital
Also on our Hong Kong schedule is our annual artist-faculty quartet performance on Radio 4. This year the Quartet will expand to sextet size, with AYO alumni from Hong Kong and Vietnam joining our string faculty for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet in D minor, Souvenir de Florence, and Mozart’s Oboe Quartet in F major, K. 370 – exclusively for Radio 4 on Sunday, 1 August at 3:00pm at Studio One, TV House, RTHK.
It’s also here in Hong Kong that we shall continue our popular tradition of playing a free concert for disadvantaged and special needs children, this year scheduled on 10 August.
We at the Asian Youth Orchestra are extremely pleased that our collaboration with Radio 4 continues this summer, helping us to take our performances beyond the walls of the Cultural Centre to thousands of listeners unable to hear the concerts in person, adding to our ever-growing concert audience in Hong Kong. The repeat broadcast of both concerts expands our audience base even further, every performer’s dream.
Twenty years. We could not have done it without you, Hong Kong. Thank you so much. Now come celebrate with us!
It’s Hong Kong that makes the AYO
The support we receive in Hong Kong from locally-based companies and individuals has made it possible for us to welcome and perform here and around the world with many of the greatest artists of our time. For all the talk of Hong Kong as a cultural desert, this city has been a

The unique style of Wu Jinglue (吳景略) (1907-1987) is recognized as part of the “Yushan Wupai” (School of Wu) (虞山吳派). He was incredibly musical and was able to master both the masculinity of the Northern style and the elegance of the Southern style. Not only a player he was also experienced in assessing, repairing, and reforming the instrument. We will hear his Memories of an Old Friend (憶故人) in the programme.
Regarded as “The Father of Chinese Musical Instruments”, the qin is a seven-string plucked instrument characterized by great subtlety and variety in sound. It has been closely associated with the intellects and Confucius was a noted qin player. Painters, poets, and novelists have been inspired by this instrument and created breathtaking masterpieces. Unlike western notation, the written music for the qin uses simplified Chinese characters indicating only the position and the method of playing and does not specify the actual notes nor their rhythm. It thus leaves space for interpretation. In this month, I will introduce you to the great qin players from the golden age, who all possessed unique and distinctive styles.
Born in Suzhou, Guan Pinghu (管平湖) (1897–1967) grew up in an artistic family. He first learned the qin from his father, and later studied with the leading players of three different schools: Yang Zongji (1865–1933) in
Beijing, the Daoist Qin Heming, and the Buddhist monk Wucheng. In 1977, a recording of his Flowing Water (流水)was sent into space on the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecrafts. In the programme, we will listen to this piece as well as other pieces for which he was famous.
Zhang Ziqian (張子謙) (1899-1991) studied under a master of the Guangling Qin School, Sun Shaotao. At age 23, he moved to Tianjin and befriended qin masters Zha Fuxi and Peng Zhiqing. The three were honoured as the
“Three Qin Masters of Pudong”. They founded the highly influential “Jin Yu Qin Association” (今虞琴社) in 1936 . Because of his masterful interpretation on The Soaring Dragon (龍翔操 long-xiang-cao), Zhang was also called Zhang Longxiang (張龍翔).
Tsar Teh-yun (蔡德允) (1905- 2007) grew up in Shanghai and moved to Hong Kong in the 50s. Not only an accomplished qin player and educator, she also excelled in poetry, calligraphy, xiao, and kunqu. Poet Xu Wenjing
once hailed her as the ‘Zen of Qin, an Immortal of Poetry and the Mi Dian of Calligraphy’. Noted for her sharp ears and flexible hands, Tsar played the qin with her characteristic style: ‘Quick as a rabbit in flight; limber as a dragon in water’. Her skill with this difficult instrument was clearly shown in her Mist and Cloud over the Xiao Xiang Rivers (瀟湘水雲).

Accountant by day and qin player by night, Yao Bingyan (姚丙炎) (1921-1983) regarded the qin as his passion rather than as a tool to earn his living. In additional to his skillful playing, he was also interested in making transcriptions. He once said, “I like transcriptions in the same way that a traveller likes to travel.” In the programme, we will hear playing by Master Yao and his two sons, Yao Gongbai (姚公白) and Yao Gongjing (姚公敬), both accomplished qin players.

Arts Happenings 藝壇快訊
Shanghai is not only the home to Expo 2010 but also to the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre (SOAC). Ever since its opening in 2005, SOAC has become one of Shanghai’s most important arts venues. It is a joint project of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Pudong New Area Government. This one billion RMB building has an area of 40,000 square meters, and it houses a Performance Hall, Concert Hall, Exhibition Hall, and Opera Hall.
SOAC is responsible for its own profits and losses. In the past 5 years, the Centre has hosted a series of high-level performances, including the Berlin Philharmonic’s Shanghai Premiere Concert. The concert was cited as one of “2005 Shanghai Ten Major Cultural News” stories, and the Centre is considered one of the “Shanghai Ten Fashion Landmarks”. The Berlin Philharmonic concerts had a high production cost of over 12 million RMB. Mr. Lin Hongming, General Manager of SOAC had to set the ticket prices strategically. He took references from other Asian cities that the orchestra also visited. Finally, he set his lowest price to be comparable to Hong Kong’s $300, but the highest price were more than those in Hong Kong, but less than those in Taipei, Tokyo, Beijing, or Seoul.
SOAC’s ticket sales accounts for more than three-quarters of the Centre’s income. It is expensive to put up productions and SOAC has to set its ticket break-even point to 80-90%, more than the usual 50% standard set by other arts venues. The Centre’s average ticket price is around $258 RMB. The Centre also needs to face the usual problems raised by group ticket purchases and ticket brokers. However, through its success at matching income and expense, the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre has received much praise. It is also one of the most important performance venues in Asia.

Although giving a solo recital seems to be more personally rewarding, many musicians are keen to share the stage with their colleagues. Yet, collaboration with one another may not necessarily work and the potential harmonies may turn into quarrels and tension. So, why bother?
To see the success of a duo with members of contrasting characteristics, take a look at the renowned piano duo Labèque Sisters. We hear their harmonious playing, yet the sisters have very different characters: Katia likes rock and crossover, while Marielle is into Baroque music; Katia talks non-stop, while Marielle is more pensive. Compared to this sibling duo, the partnership of classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin and jazz musician Stéphane Grappelli was even more unusual. Both of them had doubts at the beginning: What would Menuhin think of Grappelli’s violin technique? Would there be real collaboration considering that Menuhin had never played jazz? No wonder their first album was named Jealousy.
I believe the attraction of duet performance lies in the sense of togetherness. It’s not surprising when a musical partnership turns to marriage. Soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Roberto Alagna fell in love during the performance of La Bohème in 1992 and were the talk of the opera world for their devotion in only performing with each other. However, their romantic fairytale came to an end last year and their sweet love duet, O soave fanciulla, can be heard now only in recordings.
You don’t have to be a performer to be attracted by music for two. Tune in to All or Nothing this month and enjoy this hour of duets and guess for yourself if the partners were warring or loving.
The 57th session of the International Rostrum of Composers (IRC) was held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal, from 31 May to 4 June. A flagship programme of the International Music Council, this year’s IRC edition was, for the first time, co-organized with Portuguese Radio (RTP, Antena 2).
The 2010 Rostrum gathered representatives from 33 national radio networks from 4 continents, which presented 67 works composed within the 5 years preceding the Rostrum. Finnish Radio’s Executive Producer Heikki Valsta chaired the sessions. After the listening sessions, the assembly of delegates selected and recommended the most important works in two categories: “general” and “young composer”. he Danish composer, Simon Steen-Andersen with his Ouvertures - for amplified guzheng, sampler and orchestra won in the “general” category, and the “young composer” prize went to the 28-year-old Latvian composer, Kristaps Petersons for her work Twilight Chants written for mixed choir, double bass and glasses. These and other works will be presented in concerts and broadcasts after the Rostrum by the participating and other interested radio stations.
Over the four days of listening sessions, the diversity of works was amply demonstrated through the distinct styles and genres of the 67 excellent and thought-provoking works. The voting results showed that most delegates preferred the aesthetic quality of the music to the avant-garde styles.

COLUMNS 專欄
I like hanging around Flower Street. The place is full of vitality and I feel carefree when I’m there.
Sometimes, I would buy some flowers and bring nature into my house.
Fresh flowers have a short life. No matter how beautiful or unattractive the flowers are, after my amateur
arrangement, I will take some photos as record. Amongst these, only the yellow orchid was not my
arrangement. It was taken in Fall 2007 while I was busy organizing the Christmas Concert in the Park.
My family heard my stress during a phone conversation and two days later, they came to my house
unexpectedly, bringing a vase of yellow orchids for me. I still remember the moment when I came home
and was so amazed by the beautiful flowers on the table.
To me, hosting a music programme and arranging a vase of flowers are very similar. Each piece of music
has its own character, while each branch of flower has its own shape. I am the one to compile and arrange
them. I trust you find my music programming beautiful and good relief for the stress of your day.
