Attempt all questions in brief. (1*5 = 5) Q N QUESTION a. Define Pharmacognosy. Ans.) Pharmacognosy is derived from two greek words, “pharmacon” means “drug” and “gnosis” means “knowledge”. Pharmacognosy is the study of plant or natural sources as apossible source of drug. It is defined as branch of bioscience which treat in detail medicinal and related products or crude drug or primary type obtained from plant, animal, and mineral sources. Eg. Ergot, senns. b. What is a crude drug given examples? Ans.) The term crude drug generally applies to the products from plant and animal origin found in a raw form, that has not been advanced in value or improved in conditions.eg. quassia, clove, aloe, agar etc. c. What is the role of Hippocrates in pharmcognosy? Ans. ) The Hippocrates (460-360 B.C) is „the father of medicine‟ , it deals with anatomy and physiologyof human being in many of his treaties. d. What are the organized and unorganized drugs? Ans.) Organized drug (cellular) directly derived from plant or animal. Eg. Sandalwood, quassia, clove Unorganized drug (acellular) obtained from extraction process. Eg. Opium, aloe, agar. e. What do you mean by oleo-resin and oleo-gum-resin? Ans.) Oleo-resin : These are a homogeneous mixture of resin and volatile oil. Eg. Ginger, Canada balsam. Oleo-gum-resin : These are a homogeneous mixture of resin, gum and volatile oil. Eg. Ans.) Pharmacognosy is derived from two greek words, “pharmacon” means “drug” and “gnosis”
