• William shakespeare was an english poet, playwright, actor and theatre entrepreneur

• Being considered one of the greatest writer in english, his works include plays, sonnets and poems.

• He married Anne Hathaway at age 18, and had 3 children. He died on 23 April 1616 at the age of 52.

Early life

• He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptised on 26 April 1564. His unknown birthday is traditionally observed on 23 April, St George's Day.

• William Shakespeare was the son of John Shakespeare, a successful glover and alderman originally from Snitterfield, and Mary Arden, the daughter of an affluent landowning farmer.

• Shakespeare attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Stratford

• It is believed that by 1592, Shakespeare was a playwright in london

• He partly owned a playing company, known as Lord Chamberlain’s men.

• Many of his early plays were themed on comedies and history

• Later, he wrote mainly on tragedies with Hamlet, romeo and juliet and Othello being the more famous works.

• This period was also known as the Elizabethan Era, where under a well organised and effective government, england prospered greatly.

• It is considered to be the golden age in English history

• It also saw the height of the english Renaissance and the flowering of english poetry, music and literature.

• During this period, England emerged as the leading naval and comercial power in the west.

The renaissance

• It refers to the period of European history known as the golden age, and the age of enlightenment.

• After the long periods referred to as the dark ages following the collapse of the Roman Empire and the Medieval period, where the church dominated and oppressed learning and culture

• the renaissance period was seen as a "rebirth" of culture and learning similar to the heights of the ancient world.

• It was a cultural movement that spanned roughly the 14th to 17th century

• It begun in florence during the late middle ages and later spread to the rest of Europe

• It marks the close of the middle ages and the rise of the modern world

• During this period, there were new ideals of humanism developed against a christian backdrop.

• In the fields of science, a flurry of activity was deemed a scientific revolution, heralding the beginning of modern age

• The Renaissance brought an end to feudalism, established an effective central government and reformed the church

The Renaissance- effect on Shakespeare

• Shakespeare focused on creating “human” characters with psychologically complexity and Hamlet is perhaps the most famous example.

• The upheaval in the social hierarchy allowed Shakespeare to explore the humanity of every character regardless of their social position.

• Shakespeare utilized his knowledge of Greek and Roman classics when writing his plays. Before the renaissance, these texts had been suppressed by the Catholic Church.
