Who was Shakespeare??

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, in 1564. His dad was a very successful glove maker. By 1592 he was in London working as an actor and a dramatist. Between about 1590 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and collaborated on several more. Many of these plays were very successful both at court and in the public playhouses. In 1613, Shakespeare retired from the theatre and returned to Stratford-upon-Avon. He died and was buried there in 1616.

Scant records exist of William's childhood, and virtually none regarding his education. Scholars have surmised that he probably attended the King's New School, in Stratford, which taught reading, writing etc. Being a public official's child, William would have undoubtedly qualified for free tuition. But this confusion regarding his education has led some to raise questions about the authorship of his work and even about whether or not William Shakespeare ever existed.

1. Adam- a kindly old servant, rumoured to have been played by Shakespeare himself. As you like it.

2. Alexas- a follower of Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra.

3. Nick Bottom- one of the mechanicals. While rehearsing for a play puck (another character) changes his head into one of an ass. Titania (also another character and is queen of the fairies) falls in love with him. Midsummer Night’s Dream.

4. Young Cato- is a soldier of Brutus’ and Cassius’ party in Julius Caesar.

5. Crab- is Launces dog in The two gentlemen of Verona.

The first app is called Shakespeare and is by PlayShakespeare.com. On the Play Store it has over 100,000 downloads and is rated 4.3 stars out of a maximum of 5 stars therefore the public thoroughly enjoy this app. It incudes quizzes, the lines of plays and facts in general. It also includes a vast variety of plays therefore resulting in a very informative app. It is described by PlayShakespeare.com as the best way to enjoy his complete works.

The second app is the Shakespeare Complete Works by Hongshee Software. On the play store it has over 50,000 downloads and is rated 4.2 stars out of the maximum of 5 stars. It is a very well organised app where the plays are organised up into sections making it easier to find the plays you want. It has very good content and includes vast amounts of information resulting in a vey detailed app.

Typical day at school for William Shakespeare…

A typical day for Will would see him arriving at school at seven in the morning (six o'clock during the summer), and studying until five in the afternoon, with breaks for breakfast and lunch. The curriculum was Latin. Latin and nothing else. Although the school could be a harsh and foreboding institution, corporal punishment freely reigning, sitting at his desk was where young Will was first introduced to the classics of Roman literature, works by Ovid and Seneca, storytellers whose epics he would remember in the years to come.

The world around Shakespeare…In 1564, the year of Shakespeare's birth, the bubonic plague descended upon Stratford. Known as the Black Death, the plague was a disease carried by fleas on the backs of rats.
