The diamond-shaped window panes of the Mermaid tavern are twinkling like stars in the cold december air of london.

it is the last meeting of the Mermaid club for the year 1596, and all the members are present.

Men arrive in twos and threes and gather in groups about the room. They call each other by name and exchange new year’s wishes.

some are young, handsome and refined in person and dress. others are bohemian

it is christmas night. lords, ladies, and am-bassadors gathered in Whitehall Palace to wit-ness the play for which William shakespeare, the actors, and other artists had been working so industriously during the past few weeks. The Banqueting Hall, with a temporary stage at one end, has been converted into a fine au-ditorium.

in front of the stage sits Queen elizabeth, in her ruff and wonderful dress. Her keen eyes take note of every incident. nearest her sits the earl of essex. He is the favourite of the Queen at the moment. He has recently returned from the wars in spain, where his feats have won him some new glories for Her Majesty. He is a national hero and the Queen’s favourite.

it’s hard to believe, seeing the earl of essex today, in all the happiness and glory, that in

five years time he will be executed by a decree of the same Queen. But nobody can foresee such a turn of his fortune. At the moment all the people of the court praise the brave and generous essex.

Another Queen’s favourite is the earl of southampton – a tall, blue-eyed young man of twenty-three, with a small beard and moustache, and curly auburn hair. His costly attire is notable even in this gorgeously dressed company. The earl of southampton is one of the handsomest of the courtiers, and also one of the most distinguished in birth, wealth, and wit.

everybody knows that southampton is William shakespeare’s patron and friend. shakespeare’s first literary work – a poem called Venus and Adonis, published some three years earlier, was dedicated to the earl. it was through the patronage of southampton that the actor-author, William shakespeare, was first brought to the Queen’s notice.

Quill in hand, William shakespeare reads the play aloud, at the same time crossing out from the manuscript everything that slows down the action of the play or clouds up its joyfulness.

letting his rich imagination run free, he creates a vivid and animated image.

The lovers meet and part with beautiful, so-phisticated rhymes. The uneducated, rough tradesmen bring their clumsy efforts to serve the wedding feast. The graceful fairies dance among the fragrance of the summer mead-ows, full of wild flowers.

And shakespeare’s friends, also poets and writers, feel the charm of the play. They re-cognize William’s talent. They are under his magic spell. in shakespeare’s hands the well known stories from old authors – Plutarch and chaucer and ovid, take on a new meaning.

What a responsive audience! Roars of laughter follow the crude humour of the

all the ridiculous situations between the lovers highly amusing, too.

It’s no wonder. she has fought against the marriage offers of her courtiers and clergy all her life. she, whose own mother’s marriage had been so unhappy, will sympathize with Puck when he says of the lovers:

Lord! What fools these mortals can be!

next Puck starts all sorts of complications by squeezing the magic flower’s juice on the wrong eyes with such sad results that titania falls in love with the weaver, Bottom – a man with an ass’s head on his shoulders.

But in the morning the spell is broken and each person comes back to his proper shape and relations. The rivals become once more true friends.

The fairy king and Queen have become reconciled, too. They prepare the double
